Warranty
Franklin covers its convertible jet pumps with a limited warranty of 1 year from the date of original purchase, per the owner’s manual. SWJ Cyclone and VersaJet terms are in their manuals, and we confirm them with your quote.
Reliability
Stainless impellers on the RM2 and C Series; a stainless-insert impeller and floating stainless eye seal on the VersaJet; non-corrosive thermoplastic on the Cyclone. Every model ships with the 30/50 psi switch installed. All five are NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certified for lead content.

Measure the depth to water, not the well depth. Water within 25 ft of the pump: shallow well pump. Deeper: a convertible plus an injector matched to the pump model and depth, in a well 4 in or larger. A nozzle and venturi — the jet — sends part of the pump’s output back through a narrow opening. The fast stream creates a vacuum that pulls more water up the suction pipe, so a pump at the surface can lift water it is not sitting in.
Shallow well: jet inside the pump
One suction pipe runs from the water to the pump, with a foot valve or check valve at the bottom. The jet sits in the pump case. Works when the water level stays within 25 ft of the pump, including drawdown.
Deep well: jet down the casing
The internal injector is swapped for a bypass plug, and a matched injector goes down the well on two pipes — a drive pipe down, a suction pipe up. The C Series reaches 120 ft and the RM2 100 ft with the right injector.
Depth to water, not well depth. A 200 ft well with water standing 18 ft down is a shallow well job. The same well drawn down to 60 ft is a convertible plus deep well injector job. Measure the pumping water level, the level while the pump runs, not just the resting level.

SWJ Cyclone is the lowest-priced 1 HP shallow well pump; VersaJet mid-range
Honest verdict. For a small cabin or cistern job, the Grundfos JP PS is the only one with a 1/3 HP model, and its stainless housing will not rust. The DAB JET lifts the deepest (29 ft), builds over 215 ft of shut-off head and costs the least per horsepower at 1-1/2 HP, but it is 230V only. Goulds JS+ is the premium, built-in-USA choice with NSF 61 as well as 372. Franklin wins on value and flexibility: the SWJ Cyclone is the lowest-priced 1 HP shallow well pump on our site and will not corrode, the VersaJet’s Quick-Change nozzle lets you retune flow and pressure without replumbing, and Franklin repair kits are on our shelf for both.

McDonald is the budget and flexibility pick: the lowest-priced convertibles on our site, three motor styles to match what you are replacing, and the full kit of ejector packages, packer systems and casing adapters. Goulds covers the most horsepower (HSJ and SJ to 2 HP) and the SJ builds in its pressure control valve, at the highest price. Franklin wins on build and reach: stainless impellers on both convertibles, a published 120 ft reach on the C Series, 150 psi on the RM2, the only three-phase jet pump listed in this group, and injectors listed by pump model and depth band so the deep well conversion is right the first time.
Past a jet pump’s reach. Beyond about 120 ft of lift, or for more than about 25 GPM from a deep well, a 4 in submersible pump is the better tool. We size those too.

How to Size a Jet Pump
Four numbers pick the pump. Send them and we return the pump, the injector for a deep well, and the tank setup.
1. Depth to water. From the pump inlet down to the pumping water level. Under 25 ft: shallow well pump. Deeper: a convertible and an injector matched to the depth band.
2. Flow. How many fixtures or sprinkler heads run at once. A typical home needs about 8 to 12 GPM; add irrigation demand if the same pump waters the lawn.
3. Pressure band. Most homes run 30/50 or 40/60 psi. The cut-out pressure at the tank plus the lift is what the pump has to deliver; at 60 psi that is 60 × 2.31 = 138.6 ft of head before the lift is counted.
4. Water chemistry. Corrosive, sandy or high-mineral water steers toward the thermoplastic Cyclone, a stainless impeller, or a stainless-housing pump.
Worked example. A house needs 8 GPM at a 40/60 psi switch setting. The water sits 45 ft below the pump in a 4 in well. That is past the 25 ft shallow well limit, so it is a convertible job. A 3/4 HP Convertible Pro RM2 (FP07CI-C) with Franklin injector 147E1023, listed for the FP07CI-C at 30–60 ft, is the starting point; we confirm the flow at 60 psi against the Franklin curve before quoting, and step to the 1 HP if it falls short. What is a jet pump and how does it work?
A jet pump is a surface-mounted centrifugal pump with a nozzle and venturi, called the jet. Part of the pump’s output is sent back through the jet, which creates a vacuum that pulls water up the suction pipe. Shallow well pumps keep the jet inside the pump; convertible pumps move it down the well for deeper water.
Shallow well or deep well: which jet pump do I need?
It depends on the depth to water, not the well depth. If the water level stays within 25 ft of the pump, a shallow well pump such as the SWJ Cyclone or VersaJet works. Deeper than that, you need a convertible — the C Series or Convertible Pro RM2 — with a deep well injector matched to the pump model and depth.
How deep can a Franklin jet pump pull water?
Shallow well models lift from up to 25 ft. With a matched deep well injector, the Convertible Pro RM2 lifts from up to 100 ft and the C Series up to 120 ft. Flow falls as depth increases, and deep well installs need a well of 4 in or larger.
Which is better: Franklin, Grundfos, DAB, Goulds or A.Y. McDonald?
It depends on the job. The SWJ Cyclone is the lowest-priced 1 HP shallow well pump we sell; the Grundfos JP PS offers a 1/3 HP stainless model; the DAB JET lifts deepest at 29 ft; Goulds covers up to 2 HP with NSF 61; A.Y. What is the Quick-Change nozzle on the VersaJet?
The VersaJet and VersaJet Pro let you swap the jet nozzle to retune the pump between a high-pressure and a high-flow setup without removing the plumbing or opening the case. The VersaJet Pro ships with three nozzles in the box.
Do I need a pressure tank with a jet pump?
Yes, in a standard system. The pump runs on its 30/50 psi switch and a bladder pressure tank stores water between cycles so the pump does not short-cycle. Size the tank so the pump runs at least a minute per cycle; our pressure tank calculator does the math.
Thermoplastic or cast iron: which is better?
The thermoplastic SWJ Cyclone will not rust and resists clogging, which suits corrosive water and tighter budgets. Cast iron VersaJet and convertible pumps are heavier and more durable, and the convertibles carry stainless impellers.
When should I use a submersible instead of a jet pump?
When the water is deeper than about 120 ft, when you need more than about 25 GPM from a deep well, or when you want a quiet system with nothing above ground but the controls. A 4 in submersible handles those jobs better, and we size those too.
