The Line

One Family, Every Well-Water Job

Franklin’s jet pumps supply fresh water to homes, cabins, farms, and light-commercial systems anywhere the source sits within about a 100 ft total lift. The material range spans corrosion-resistant thermoplastic to rugged cast iron, so there’s a right pump for a budget shallow-well swap and for a deep, aggressive-water installation alike.

Two families, split by how far the water sits below the pump. Shallow-well jet pumps (SWJ Cyclone, VersaJet, VersaJet Pro) draw directly from a source within roughly 25 ft of the pump — the common case for a cistern, spring, or high water table. Convertible jet pumps (Convertible Pro RM2 and C Series) ship set up for shallow well but accept a deep-well injector that drops down the well casing, letting a single surface pump reach water well below 25 ft, toward the ~100 ft class.

Every Franklin jet pump on this page arrives with a factory-installed, adjustable 30/50 psi pressure switch, pairs with a standard bladder pressure tank, and can instead be run on an inline flow control when you want to skip the tank. Give us your depth to water, your target flow and pressure, and your water chemistry, and we match the pump — and, for a convertible, the correct injector for the total lift.

Jet Pump Basics

How a Jet Pump Works — and Which Kind You Need

A jet pump creates suction to pull water up to the surface. A nozzle-and-venturi assembly (the “jet”) recirculates a portion of the pump’s output to boost the vacuum at the intake — that’s what lets a surface-mounted pump lift water it isn’t sitting in.

Shallow Well vs Deep Well (Convertible)
Shallow Well — jet built into the pump
The jet assembly lives inside the pump case. Best when water sits within ~25 ft of the pump. Simplest install: one pipe from the source. Lines: SWJ Cyclone, VersaJet, VersaJet Pro.
Deep Well — jet drops down the casing
A convertible pump swaps its internal shallow-well injector for a bypass plug and runs a matched injector down the well on a two-pipe setup, reaching water well past 25 ft. Lines: Convertible Pro RM2, C Series.
Total lift governs the choice
Measure the distance from the pump down to the water level (not the well depth). Under ~25 ft: shallow. Deeper: convertible plus an injector sized to that lift.

Pressure & flow are set at the nozzle. The VersaJet and VersaJet Pro use a Quick-Change nozzle so the same pump can be re-tuned from a high-pressure profile to a high-flow profile without opening the case — useful when a system’s needs change or aren’t fully known at install.

Measure Depth To Water, Not Well Depth

The number that picks your pump is how far the static water level sits below the pump inlet. A 200 ft well with water standing 18 ft down is a shallow-well job; the same well drawn down to 60 ft is a convertible + deep-well injector job. Send us the depth to water and we size it.

Selection Note

Nominal flows, pressures, and depth ratings below are approximate and depend on model, HP, nozzle, and total lift. Watermain Supply provides engineering-led sizing and selection; final duty point and injector selection are confirmed against Franklin Electric published performance data before you order.

Convertible & Deep Well Jet Pumps

Convertible pumps ship configured for shallow well and convert to deep well by swapping the internal injector for a bypass plug and adding a matched deep-well injector down the casing — extending a single surface pump’s reach toward the ~100 ft class. Deep-well injector kits are ordered separately and selected to the total lift.

Deep-Well Injectors Are Ordered To The Lift

A deep-well injector kit (venturi, nozzle, injector body, and foot valve) must be matched to the total suction lift — the same pump uses different injectors for a 40 ft lift versus a 90 ft lift, and the injector sets the flow and pressure you’ll actually get. Deep-well installs generally require a minimum 4 in inside well diameter. Send us your depth to water and we spec the injector with the pump.

Get It Right The First Time

How to Size a Jet Pump

Four numbers pick the pump. Send them over and we return an engineering-led selection — pump, motor, and (for a convertible) the matched deep-well injector.

1. Depth to water. The distance from the pump inlet down to the static (resting) water level. Under ~25 ft points to a shallow-well pump; deeper points to a convertible plus injector.

2. Flow you need (GPM). Roughly how many fixtures or sprinkler heads run at once. This drives HP and, on a VersaJet, which nozzle profile.

3. Pressure you want (PSI). Most homes run a 30/50 or 40/60 band; irrigation and multi-story homes may want more. Higher pressure trades against flow on any given pump.

4. Water chemistry. Corrosive, sandy, or high-mineral water steers toward the thermoplastic SWJ Cyclone or a stainless-impeller convertible.

What You Get Back

A pump recommendation with the nominal duty point, the correct injector for a deep-well job, and the pressure-tank or inline-control approach that fits — all confirmed against Franklin Electric performance data. We don’t commit a final model or duty point until the selection is verified for your numbers.

Where These Pumps Go To Work

Jet Pump Applications

The same lines cover most above-ground fresh-water supply jobs within a ~100 ft total lift.

Franklin jet pumps supply homes and cabins from a private well, farms and acreages for house and livestock water, cisterns and rain-catch tanks, springs and shallow wells, and seasonal or vacation properties where a simple, serviceable surface pump beats a submersible. Convertible models handle the same duties when the water sits deeper, and any of these pairs with a pressure tank or an inline flow control to deliver steady household pressure.

Jet Pump Questions

What is a jet pump and how does it work?
A jet pump is a surface-mounted pump that creates suction to lift water from a well or cistern. A nozzle-and-venturi “jet” recirculates part of the pump’s output to boost the vacuum at the intake, so the pump can draw water it isn’t sitting in. Shallow-well models keep the jet inside the pump; convertible models can move it down the well for deeper water.
Shallow well or deep well — which do I need?
It comes down to how far the water sits below the pump. Within roughly 25 ft, a shallow-well pump (SWJ Cyclone, VersaJet, VersaJet Pro) handles it. Deeper than that, you need a convertible — Convertible Pro RM2 or C Series — with a deep-well injector sized to the total lift.
How deep can a jet pump pull water?
A shallow-well jet pump lifts water from about 25 ft or less. A convertible jet pump with a matched deep-well injector reaches much deeper — the RM2 toward the ~100 ft class and the C Series toward ~120 ft with the correct kit. The injector, not just the pump, sets how deep you can go and how much flow you get.
What size jet pump (HP) do I need?
HP follows your depth to water, the flow (GPM) you need, and the pressure you want — not a single rule of thumb. More depth and more flow mean more HP. Send us those numbers plus your water chemistry and we return an engineering-led selection rather than guessing a model.
Thermoplastic (SWJ) or cast iron — which is better?
Thermoplastic (SWJ Cyclone) won’t rust and resists clogging, making it the pick for corrosive or aggressive water and tighter budgets. Cast iron (VersaJet, VersaJet Pro, and the convertibles) is more durable and generally delivers higher flow.
What is the Quick-Change nozzle on the VersaJet?
The VersaJet and VersaJet Pro let you swap the jet nozzle to re-tune the pump between a high-pressure setup and a high-flow setup — without removing the plumbing or opening the case. It’s handy when a system’s flow-vs-pressure balance changes or isn’t fully known at install.
Do I need a pressure tank with a jet pump?
Traditionally yes — a jet pump runs on a 30/50 psi switch and a bladder pressure tank that stores pressure between pump cycles. You can instead pair the pump with a Franklin inline flow control to skip the tank; proper pump selection matters there, since shut-off pressure is realized in the system. Ask us and we’ll spec whichever fits.
