Check & Foot Valve Best Practices

The check valve is invisible until it fails — and when it fails, the symptoms are subtle (loss of prime, pump short cycling, slow tank refill). Get the install right and you forget about them.

Match Size to Pipe

Check and foot valves are sized to pipe NPT. Don't downsize — restricting the line at the valve raises pump head and drops flow. 1 in pipe = 1 in valve. Always.

Spring Loaded for Vertical

In vertical pipe runs (drop pipe, vertical risers), specify spring-loaded check valves (Brady SLC series). Gravity alone takes too long to seat the disk — backflow happens in the milliseconds before the disk drops. Spring closes the valve instantly.

Foot Valve at the Bottom of Suction

Jet-pump suction lines need a foot valve at the bottom of the suction pipe — the strainer keeps debris out and the check keeps the line primed. Without one, the pump loses prime every time it shuts off.

Lead-Free for Potable

NSF 61/372 LF compliance is required on all post-2014 potable installs. Specify the LF suffix on every brass check or foot valve. Standard (non-LF) brass is acceptable only for industrial, irrigation, or non-potable replacement service.

Stainless for Aggressive Water

High-iron, high-chloride, sulfide-bearing, or salt-influenced water destroys brass check valves within 5–8 years. Specify stainless (TSS suffix on import series) for these installs. The cost premium is small relative to the labor of replacing a corroded check.

Cast Iron Field-Serviceable

Cast iron foot valves (FV540 series) are designed to be rebuilt in place. Replace the leather (RP-series) every 5–7 years on regularly-cycled installs — the leather is $10–$120 vs $200–$900 for a full valve.

Application Selection

Submersible Drop Pipe Check

Use CV-4LF (1 in) brass check valve at the pump discharge or every 200 ft on deep installs. Prevents backflow when pump shuts off and reduces water hammer.

Jet Pump Suction

Use FV-4LF (1 in) brass foot valve at the bottom of the suction pipe. Strainer keeps debris out, check keeps the line primed. Standard residential jet-pump install.

Larger Commercial Centrifugal

Use FV540-12 (3 in) or FV540-16 (4 in) cast iron foot valve. Standard for commercial pumps with 3 in or 4 in suction. Field-serviceable — rebuild with RP-series leather.

Tank Discharge / System Outlet

Use CVA or CVB series brass check valve with built-in taps for gauge and drain ports. Saves separate fittings on the outlet line.

Sump Pump Discharge

Use SPCV1 sump pump check valve or FCCV 4S PVC. Vertical install, light-duty cycling. Quiet operation important in basement/utility room installs.

Sewage Backflow Protection

Use 2GP Jackel sewage check valve (2 in SLV x SLV). Heavy-duty for raw sewage service. Standard on sewage ejector and lift-station discharge.

Aggressive Water Chemistry

Use CV-TSS or FV-TSS stainless in 3/4 in through 1 1/2 in. Standard for high-iron East Texas wells, high-chloride coastal, and any sulfide-bearing groundwater.

Booster Pump Discharge

Use CV-5LF (1 1/4 in) with Brady SLC125 spring backup. The brass check is the primary backflow stop; the Brady SLC adds instant-close protection for high-cycle booster service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a check valve and a foot valve?
A check valve stops backflow — allows flow one direction only. A foot valve is a check valve with a strainer screen built into the inlet end — designed to install at the bottom of a jet pump's suction pipe to keep the pump primed and keep debris out of the line. Same internal mechanism, different application.
Spring-loaded vs gravity check — when do I use each?
Spring-loaded (SLC, SFV) closes instantly under reverse flow — required for vertical installs and high-cycle service where gravity alone is too slow. Gravity (LC, FV without spring) works in horizontal runs and lower-cycle applications. Spring versions cost slightly more but eliminate water hammer and prevent the pump-cycling losses that gravity checks miss.
Domestic vs import brass — is there a quality difference?
Both are NSF 61/372 lead-free and meet the same potable-water standards. Domestic CV-LF series uses thicker brass castings and tighter machining tolerances — longer life, premium choice. Import CV-T series is roughly 30–50% lower cost, suitable for budget installs and high-volume contractor work. Both seal water; the difference is service life expectancy.
What does the tap variant (CVA, CVB, CVC) mean?
Number of accessory ports built into the valve body. CVA = 1 tap (typically pressure gauge). CVB = 2 taps (gauge + drain). CVC = 4 taps (gauge, drain, switch, relief). Saves separate tee fittings on the line. Use the multi-tap variants when you need to mount multiple accessories at the check-valve location.
How do I rebuild a cast iron foot valve?
Pull the foot valve, disassemble the cap (typically 4–6 bolts), remove the old leather, install the matching RP-series replacement leather, reassemble. RP34 for FV540-8 (2 in), RP35 for FV540-12 (3 in), RP37 for FV540-16 (4 in), RP39 for FV540-24 (6 in). Total job time: 30–60 minutes. Cost: $10–$120 vs $200–$900 for a new valve.
Do I need stainless or is brass enough?
Brass is fine for clean residential drinking water. Specify stainless (TSS suffix) for: (1) high-iron groundwater — common East Texas. (2) High-chloride or salt-influenced water — coastal Gulf Coast. (3) Sulfide-bearing water — rotten-egg smell. (4) Hot water service — brass corrodes faster at temperature. Stainless costs more upfront but eliminates 5–8 year corrosion replacement.
Why use PVC check valves (FCCV) instead of brass?
Three reasons: (1) Cost — PVC is significantly less than brass at the same size. (2) Chemical resistance — PVC tolerates chlorinated, acidic, and brine service that destroys brass. (3) Sump and irrigation — the standard for low-pressure non-potable applications. Use PVC for sump, irrigation, and chemical service. Use brass for drinking water and high-pressure.
What's a Jackel valve and where is it used?
Jackel makes specialty sewage check valves — designed to handle raw sewage and effluent without clogging on solids. The 2GP 2 in SLV x SLV is the workhorse on sewage ejector pump discharge and lift-station discharge. The DJ and H-series 3-way and 4-way variants are for combined inlet/outlet applications. Don't substitute a standard PVC check — sewage check valves have wider flow paths designed for solids passage.
How often should I replace a check valve?
Brass check valves typically last 15–25 years in clean residential service, 8–15 years in heavy commercial. Cast iron foot valves last 20+ years with periodic leather replacement. PVC checks last 10–15 years before the disk and seat wear creates leakage. Symptoms of failing check: pump short cycles, tank doesn't hold pressure with pump off, jet pump loses prime overnight. Replace at first sign of these symptoms.
