Plumbing Valve Best Practices

Choosing the right valve for the application means lower cost, easier service, and a system that works the way you intended.

Ball for On/Off — Gate for Throttling

Ball valves are quarter-turn quick on/off — designed to be fully open or fully closed. Gate valves can throttle flow but operate more slowly. Use ball for routine isolation and shutoff; use gate for less-frequent main isolation, especially on 3 in+ lines where gate is cheaper.

LF for Potable Always

Federal law (2014) requires ≤0.25% lead on wetted surfaces in potable systems. Specify LF suffix on every valve in a drinking-water install. Standard non-LF brass (BV5T, BV6T, BV8T) is for industrial, irrigation, or non-potable replacement only.

Stainless for Aggressive Water

High-iron, high-chloride, sulfide-bearing, or hot-water service corrodes brass valves within 5–8 years. Specify SS variants (BV3TSS, BV4TSS, HBBV2TSS, etc.) for these conditions. The cost premium is small relative to repeat replacement labor.

Union Type for Service-Heavy Installs

Anywhere the valve might be replaced or removed for service — specify union variants (UBV3S-R through UBV16S-R). The union joint lets you remove the valve without breaking glued or threaded pipe joints. Saves hours per service call.

EPDM Seals Tolerate Chlorine

PVC ball valves come with EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) seals as standard. EPDM resists chlorine attack — critical on chlorinated city water and pool systems. Don't substitute Buna-N or Viton without verifying chemical compatibility.

Sampling Faucet for Water Testing

Wells under regulatory monitoring (commercial, multi-family, public) require a dedicated sampling tap. HBSF series sampling faucets have a smooth bore that doesn't trap residual water — gives accurate test samples. Mount post-treatment and pre-distribution.

Application Selection

Standard Residential Supply Isolation

Use BV3T-LF (3/4 in) brass ball valve. The most-installed isolation valve in residential plumbing. Lead-free for potable compliance.

Outdoor Hose Outlet

Use HBBV3T-LF ball-valve hose bibb (3/4 in). Quarter-turn operation lasts longer than rotating-stem traditional bibbs. Lead-free for potable compliance.

Coastal / Food-Grade Outdoor Bibb

Use HBBV3TSS stainless ball-valve hose bibb. Required within 10 miles of the coast and on any food/beverage service install.

Larger 3 in or 4 in Main Isolation

Use GV12TLF (3 in) or GV16TLF (4 in) brass gate valve. Lower cost than ball at these sizes; lower operating torque on larger lines.

Irrigation / Sprinkler Manifold

Use UBV3S-R, UBV4S-R, or UBV5S-R union PVC ball valves. EPDM seals tolerate chlorinated city water. Union joints simplify zone valve replacement.

Pressure Tank Drain

Use BD3-LF (3/4 in) brass boiler drain on the tank tee drain port. Standard for residential bladder tank drain valve. Threaded NPT mount.

Non-Potable Irrigation Shutoff

Use PIBV4T-R or PIBV5T-R threaded PVC ball valves. Significantly lower cost than brass for irrigation, livestock watering, and other non-potable applications.

Water Quality Sampling Tap

Use HBSF2TLF or HBSF3TLF sampling faucet. Required on commercial, multi-family, and public water systems. Smooth bore prevents sample contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ball valve vs gate valve — which do I use?
Ball valves are quarter-turn fast on/off — designed to be fully open or fully closed. Best for routine isolation and shutoff. Gate valves can throttle flow and rise/fall slowly with the stem — better for less-frequent main isolation, especially in 3 in and 4 in sizes where gate is cheaper than ball. Don't throttle a ball valve permanently — the partial-flow position erodes the ball seat over time.
Brass or PVC ball valve?
Brass for potable supply, hot water, and pressure-cycled service. Higher cost, longer life, lead-free compliant. PVC for irrigation, chemical, non-potable, and cost-sensitive installs. Roughly half the cost of brass. Both work; the choice is application-driven. Don't use PVC on hot water (>140°F) — the body can deform under temperature.
What's the difference between FxF and SxS PVC ball valves?
FxF (PIBV-T-R) = Female threaded x Female threaded. Use for connecting to threaded NPT pipe ends. SxS (PIBV-S-R) = Slip x Slip socket. Use for solvent-welded connections to PVC pipe ends. SxS provides a stronger, lower-leak joint — preferred for new installs. FxF is faster for service replacement on existing threaded systems.
Why are some larger ball valves not LF?
Standard 1 1/4 in, 1 1/2 in, and 2 in brass ball valves (BV5T, BV6T, BV8T) are listed as standard brass in the Campbell catalog — not LF. For potable install at these sizes, ask us about LF or stainless special-order options. Federal law requires ≤0.25% lead on potable wetted surfaces — non-LF can be used for irrigation, industrial, or non-potable replacement only.
What's a sampling faucet and when do I need one?
HBSF series sampling faucets have a smooth, low-volume bore that doesn't trap residual water — ensures accurate water-quality test samples. Required on commercial, multi-family, and public water systems for regulatory monitoring (TCEQ in Texas, EPA federal). Mount the sampling faucet between treatment equipment and the distribution system, not at a hose bibb where stagnant water gives false readings.
EPDM seal — what does that mean?
EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber seal material that resists chlorine, ozone, and weathering attack. Standard on Campbell PVC ball valves — ideal for chlorinated city water, pool systems, and most well water. Don't substitute Buna-N (NBR) on chlorine service — it degrades within a year. Viton (FKM) is for fuel and aggressive chemicals, not standard water.
Standard hose bibb vs ball-valve hose bibb?
Standard hose bibb (HB) uses a rotating-stem mechanism — multi-turn open/close, packing-style stem seal. Lower cost, longer service life on infrequent use. Ball-valve hose bibb (HBBV) uses quarter-turn ball-valve mechanism — faster operation, no packing wear, longer life under frequent use. For high-cycle outlets (livestock, washdown, contractor use), specify HBBV. For standard residential, either works.
Why use union PVC ball valves instead of standard?
Union joints (UBV) let you remove the valve from the system for service or replacement without breaking the glued or threaded pipe joints. Critical for irrigation manifolds, water-treatment systems, and any install where the valve might need future service. Cost is roughly double the standard PIBV variant, but the labor savings on a single replacement pays for the upgrade.
Boiler drain vs hose bibb — aren't they the same?
Functionally similar — both are 1/2 in or 3/4 in NPT inlet, 3/4 in hose-thread outlet. Boiler drains (BD-LF) are designed for tank drainage with a longer hose-thread outlet for direct hose attachment. Hose bibbs (HB-LF, HBBV-LF) are designed for general outdoor outlets and may include a vacuum breaker. For pressure tank drain ports, specify BD-LF. For outdoor faucets, specify HB or HBBV.
