Tank Tee Configurations

A tank tee or cross is the central plumbing manifold at every pressure tank install — tank in, system out, gauge, pressure switch, drain, and relief valve all converge on this single fitting.

Solid Tank Cross (STC)

One-Piece Casting · Standard · Stainless

Solid one-piece red brass casting — the lowest leak-path option. Available in 1 in (STC4) and 1 1/4 in (STC5) sizes with 3/4 in or 1 in branch. Lead-free TLF and stainless TSS variants. STC4-3XTLF adds an extra 1/2 in tap for additional accessory.

Fabricated Tank Cross (FTX)

Multi-Port · Custom Lengths · Higher Capacity

Fabricated from threaded brass components into a single assembly. More ports than the solid version — FTX series adds extra accessory taps. Available in 11 in, 13 in, and 16 in lengths to match your tank height. Lead-free LF standard.

Union Tank Cross (ETC / USS)

Service-Friendly · Removable Union

Built-in union joint allows the tank tee to be removed for tank service without breaking pipe joints. ETC series has the union threaded into the tee body. STC4-3ULF adds a union to the solid casting. STC4-3USSS is the union short-tee in stainless. A must on installs where the tank gets serviced or replaced regularly.

Tank Tee Selection Logic

Pick the configuration that matches your tank port size, install permanence, and water chemistry.

Match to Tank Inlet

Tank port is 1 in NPT? Use 1 in tank tee. Port is 1 1/4 in? Use 1 1/4 in. Don't undersize the tee — the restriction defeats the purpose of the larger tank port.

Solid vs Fabricated

Solid (STC): One-piece casting, fewer leak paths, lower cost, fewer ports. Use on standard residential.
Fabricated (FTX): More ports, longer body options, custom configurations. Use on larger tanks or multi-accessory installs.

Union Where Service Matters

If you anticipate replacing the tank in 5–15 years, spend the extra $20–$50 for a union variant (ETC, ULF, USS). The union joint lets you swap tanks without breaking the entire plumbing run.

Lead-Free is the Default

NSF 61/372 lead-free is required on all potable installs after January 2014. Always specify the LF variant — non-LF is for industrial/non-potable only. Don't risk a code rejection.

Stainless for Hot/Aggressive

For hot-water tanks, brine systems, high-iron, or salt-water-influenced groundwater: specify stainless (TSS, USSS). Brass corrodes within 5–8 years in these conditions.

Pre-Built TFP for Volume Installers

If you install more than 5 tanks per year, switch to TFP pre-built packages. The labor savings (30+ min per tank) plus eliminated callbacks for forgotten fittings pay for the premium within the first 10 installs.

Application Selection

Standard Residential 30 gal Tank

Use STC4-3TLF solid tank cross or UTT4-3LF universal tank tee. Pair with TFP 8LF for a complete pre-built package.

Larger Residential 80 gal Tank

Use STC5-4TLF 1 1/4 in solid cross or UTT5-4LF. Pre-built option: TFP 38LF or TFP 49LF.

Tank Replacement / Service-Heavy

Use union variant (ETC4-3ULF or STC4-3ULF). Allows tank swap without breaking system plumbing — cuts replacement labor in half.

Constant Pressure VFD Booster

Use CPM5-4SSA or CPM5-4SSB stainless constant-pressure manifold. Pair with TFPCP1LF or TFPCP2LF pre-built package.

Multi-Tank Parallel Install

Use TM-2LF, TM-12LF, or TM-13LF tank manifold fittings. Allows two or more pressure tanks to share a common system header.

Aggressive Water Chemistry

Use STC4-3TSS or STC5-4TSS stainless. Standard for high-iron, high-chloride, or salt-influenced wells. Higher upfront cost, eliminates 5–8 year corrosion replacement.

Tall / Vertical Pressure Tank

Use FTX4-3X13LF (13 in long) or FTX5-4X16LF (16 in long). Adds vertical space between tank port and accessories on tall vertical tanks.

Multi-Accessory (Filter + Treatment)

Use STC4-3XTLF with extra 1/2 in tap or FTX5-4-3 series with three-size port options. Lets you mount filter housing, water treatment metering, and standard accessories on one fitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a tank tee for and what mounts on it?
A tank tee is the central plumbing manifold at every pressure tank install. Five things mount on it: (1) the tank inlet port, (2) the system supply line going to the house, (3) a pressure gauge, (4) a Square D pressure switch, (5) a drain valve and/or relief valve. One fitting consolidates all of these into a single connection point at the tank.
Solid (STC) vs Fabricated (FTX) — which is better?
Solid (STC) is one-piece cast brass — fewer leak paths, lower cost, simpler. Best for standard residential. Fabricated (FTX) is assembled from threaded brass parts — more ports, longer body length options, more accessory mounting flexibility. Best for larger tanks, commercial, or multi-accessory installs. Both are equally reliable when properly installed.
Why a union variant?
A union joint lets you remove the tank tee from the system without unscrewing all the connected plumbing. Critical when the tank gets serviced or replaced — without a union, you have to break and re-thread the system supply line every time. Spend the extra $20–$50 on the union variant for any install where the tank is likely to be replaced within the system's life.
Are pre-built TFP packages worth the price premium?
Yes, especially for volume installers. A TFP package eliminates roughly 30 minutes of fitting assembly, removes 4–6 individual fitting purchases, and prevents the "I forgot the relief valve" callback. If you install more than 5 pressure tanks per year, the labor savings pay for the premium within the first 10 installs.
Lead-free or standard?
Lead-free (LF) is the default for any potable water install. Federal law (Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act, 2014) requires ≤0.25% lead by weight on potable wetted surfaces. Standard (non-LF) brass is for industrial, non-potable, or pre-2014 service replacement only. Specify LF on every new install — the cost difference is negligible compared to a code rejection.
When should I use stainless instead of brass?
Specify stainless (TSS, USSS suffix) for: (1) hot-water service — brass corrodes faster at elevated temps. (2) High-iron groundwater — common in East Texas. (3) High-chloride or salt-influenced wells — coastal Gulf Coast. (4) Brine systems. Brass typically lasts 5–8 years in these conditions; stainless lasts the life of the tank.
What size port for accessories?
Standard configuration: 3/4 in NPT for gauge, switch, and drain. Some tank tees offer an additional 1/2 in tap (STC4-3XTLF) for a fourth accessory like a filter sediment trap. The pressure switch and gauge always use 3/4 in — don't reduce these to 1/2 in or you risk pressure-reading errors.
Can I use galvanized or plastic instead of brass?
Galvanized (GTC4T) works for non-potable industrial installs — cattle troughs, irrigation, washdown. Plastic (PTC54) is for non-pressurized or low-pressure applications and water-treatment systems where brass would corrode. For potable residential and commercial, always brass — galvanized rusts internally and contaminates water; plastic creeps under pressure cycling.
How do I handle a multi-tank install?
Use tank manifold fittings (TM-2LF, TM-12LF, or TM-13LF) in place of a single tank tee. Each tank gets a port on the manifold, and the manifold has a single system inlet/outlet. Lets two, three, or more tanks share a common header. Critical for high-demand installs where one tank can't handle the cycling load.
