A Smith-Blair end cap works like one end of a pipe coupling: a sleeve closed at the far end slides over the pipe, and a follower drawn in by the bolts presses a Nitrile gasket onto the pipe OD. No pipe-end preparation is needed beyond cleaning, and the cap comes off again when the line is extended. Crews use them to dead-end mains, cap abandoned segments, close branches built ahead of service, and test new pipe.

A cap that only seals must be held on by a thrust block or anchoring whenever the line is under pressure. A restrained line cap grips the pipe and holds itself. Which End Cap Do I Need?

First decide who holds the cap on the pipe, then match the pipe.

Thrust Block or Anchor in Place

  • Cast, ductile iron or AC pipe to 12 in: Style 482 OMNI, 250 PSI.
  • Steel pipe, or any main 14 to 20 in: Style 481, 150 PSI.
  • Both have a threaded outlet for blow-off, draining or testing.

No Thrust Block: Restrained Cap

  • EZW-C line cap: seal and restraint in one stab-fit unit, 2 to 12 in.
  • For temporary dead ends, phased construction and tight trenches.
  • Pressure confirmed for your pipe type before you order.
Never pressurize an unrestrained cap: Smith-Blair requires thrust restraint on the 481 and 482 whenever the line is in use. Without it, line pressure pushes the cap off the pipe end.

How Much Thrust Is on an End Cap?

Thrust on a dead end equals line pressure times the pipe area. It is larger than most people expect.

Size the restraint for test pressure: a hydrostatic test usually runs above working pressure, so the block or restraint must hold the test thrust. Your project engineer sets the block size from the thrust and the soil bearing capacity.

How to measure: clean the last few inches of the pipe, wrap a pi tape around it and take two readings 90° apart. Old cast iron and AC run larger than these figures by class; the 482 range covers most of them.

End Cap Questions

What is a pipe end cap or line cap?

A bolted fitting that seals the plain end of a pipe without welding, threading or flanging. A gasket and follower seal around the pipe OD, the same way one end of a coupling does.

Do end caps need thrust restraint?

The 481 and 482 seal but do not restrain: Smith-Blair requires thrust restraint whenever the line is in use, by thrust block, anchoring or a restraint harness. The EZW-C line cap restrains itself with a grip ring.

How much thrust is on a capped pipe?

Pressure times the pipe area. An 8 in ductile iron main (9.05 in OD) at 150 PSI pushes about 9,650 lb on the cap; a 12 in main about 20,500 lb. The table on this page gives more sizes.

Which cap for cast iron or ductile iron pipe?

The 482 OMNI: one cap per size covers iron pipe size, ductile iron and AC ODs, rated to 250 PSI. Above 12 in, use the 481.

Which cap for PVC pipe?

The 482 and 481 both seal PVC of matching OD; check thin-wall PVC with us. On unanchored PVC, the restrained EZW-C or a thrust block is needed.

Which cap for HDPE pipe?

The 481 and 482 fit HDPE with Smith-Blair pipe stiffeners in the pipe end, which are required on polyethylene.

Can I test a line against an end cap?

Yes: both caps are used for line testing, and the threaded outlet takes a test plug, gauge or blow-off. Keep test pressure within the cap rating and restrain the cap before pressurizing.

What size outlet do the caps have?

The 481 has a 2 in FNPT outlet on every size. The 482 has a 1 in NPT outlet on 2–3 in and 2 in NPT on 4–12 in. Both are offset for draining.

481 or 482?

The 482 for cast, ductile and AC pipe to 12 in: 250 PSI and a wide OD range. The 481 for steel pipe, sizes to 20 in, or when you want the 2 in outlet on a small main.

Are end caps returnable?

No. Smith-Blair caps are made to order and non-returnable, so we confirm the pipe OD and build before the order ships.
