Franklin Electric Engine-Driven, Hydraulic, Solar and Bare-Shaft Pumps
Franklin Electric engine-driven, hydraulic, bare-shaft and solar surface pumps for sites where the pump runs off a gas engine, a hydraulic circuit, your own motor or engine, or a solar array. Gas engine pumps (FACGF, FNG-23V, FBSGF, FNSGF, FMIG) come complete with a 3.5 to 23 HP Briggs and Stratton, Honda or Kohler engine and deliver up to 400 GPM or 275 ft of head. XS 3x4-9 hydraulic-drive pumps take an SAE B or C spline hydraulic motor in CW or CCW rotation. The bare-shaft FAOT, FACT, FBSTF, FMIT and XS frame-mount pumps couple to your own driver and reach 2,800 GPM on the XS 13 in frame. The Fhoton Surface SolarPAK pairs a 1.1 kW Fhoton solar controller with a Franklin surface pump, motor and low-flow switch in 1/2 to 1-1/2 HP packages. All share cast iron volutes, carbon/ceramic or packed shaft seals and NPT, grooved or flanged connections, with working pressures from 120 psi to 350 psi depending on series. We supply U.S. 60 Hz builds and offer engineering-led sizing that matches the pump to your engine, hydraulic circuit, motor or solar array against the Franklin curve. This collection covers the Franklin Electric surface pumps that are bought by their driver rather than by their motor: gas engine-driven centrifugal and self-priming pumps (FACGF, FNG-23V, FBSGF, FNSGF, FMIG), XS frame-mount pumps machined for a hydraulic motor, bare-shaft frame-mount pumps (FAOT, FACT, FBSTF, FMIT and XS) that you couple to your own motor or engine, and the Fhoton Surface SolarPAK for pumping off a solar array. It is written for water-truck and spray-rig builders, irrigation and dewatering contractors, OEMs, and owners of remote sites with no utility power.
We supply U.S. 60 Hz builds and help you match the pump to the driver you actually have: engine HP, hydraulic flow, pressure and rotation, shaft size and speed, or PV array voltage and wattage. Send us the duty point and the driver details and we will run an engineering-led selection against the Franklin curves — call 1-888.510.4036. Genuine Franklin Electric equipment, factory-new in original packaging — sold and supported by Watermain Supply, an independent industrial supplier.
Will It Work for Me?
Four checks that settle most specialty pump orders. The driver decides the fit here as much as the pump does.
Warranty
Franklin warrants these pumps against defects in material and workmanship for 12 months from the date of installation or 24 months from the date of manufacture, whichever occurs first, per the FACGF, FAOT and FBSTF Series Owner’s Manuals. XS frame-mount and Fhoton packages carry the terms printed in the manual shipped with the unit.
Full terms and conditions are in the manufacturer’s manual.
Reliability
Cast iron volutes, carbon/ceramic mechanical seals with 300-series stainless hardware, and heavy iron bearing frames with oversized shafts on the XS. The FMIG adds a replaceable steel wear plate and handles mud, sand or silt up to 10% by volume.
Fit
Engine and surface pumps lift water up to 25 ft vertical from pump to water level, less at altitude. Beyond that, the driver rules the job: engine pumps turn clockwise viewed from the engine side, hydraulic XS pumps need the matching SAE B or C spline and CW or CCW rotation, and the Fhoton 1.1 kW controller needs a PV array under 420 V open circuit.
Match It Now
Send the flow, head or pressure, suction lift, and your driver details (engine HP, hydraulic motor spec, motor frame and RPM, or array layout). We return a selection checked against the manufacturer curve.
Three groups by driver: a gas engine on the pump, a driver you supply (hydraulic motor, electric motor or engine), or the sun.

Quick rule. If the site has no power and the job moves, buy the engine pump. If the vehicle already has a hydraulic circuit, buy the XS hydraulic mount in the right spline and rotation. If you already own the motor or engine, or need more than 400 GPM, buy bare-shaft. If the water point is remote and the demand is small and daytime, buy the Fhoton SolarPAK.

Driver Sizing & Best Practices
The pump is sized from the duty point; the driver is then sized from the pump curve at that duty point. Most mistakes on these orders come from sizing the driver off the pump size instead of the curve.
Step 1: Total dynamic head
TDH = static lift + friction losses + required pressure × 2.31 ft/psi. Going the other way, 1 ft of water column equals 0.433 psi. Check suction first: these pumps are rated for a vertical distance of up to 25 ft from pump to water level, including drawdown, and less at altitude. Keep suction lines short, one size larger than the pump inlet on long runs, and sloping up to the pump. Confirm available NPSH exceeds the NPSH required on the curve, especially on the XS at high flow.
Worked example (engine pump). Transfer from a pond with 10 ft of suction lift, up 40 ft of elevation, through piping with 25 ft of friction loss, delivering 30 psi at the outlet. Pressure head = 30 × 2.31 = 69.3 ft. TDH = 10 + 40 + 25 + 69.3 = 144.3 ft. The 40 ft rise alone is 40 × 0.433 = 17.3 psi of backpressure. Step-up rule: keep the duty point at or below about 70% of the pump’s maximum head, so look for a maximum head of at least 144.3 ÷ 0.70 = 206 ft. That points to the FACGF family (to 275 ft) rather than the FNSGF (to 185 ft). We then confirm the flow at 144.3 ft on the FACGF curve for the engine size you choose.
Step 2: Match the driver
Engine HP
On engine-driven models the engine is matched by Franklin; pick the model whose curve covers your duty point. Larger engines move more water: in the FBSGF table, the 9 HP FBSGF-12H moves 310 GPM at 30 ft against 135 GPM for the 3.5 HP FBSGF-8. Rotation is clockwise viewed from the engine side. Run at the throttle setting that holds the duty point; if the pump will not catch prime, low engine speed is one of the first checks in the FACGF manual.
Hydraulic flow, pressure, rotation
Motor speed (RPM) = hydraulic flow (GPM) × 231 ÷ motor displacement (cu in/rev). Hydraulic HP = GPM × psi ÷ 1714. Torque (lb-in) = psi × displacement ÷ 6.28. Example: to turn the pump at 2,200 RPM with a 2.5 cu in/rev motor needs 2,200 × 2.5 ÷ 231 = 23.8 GPM. If the curve shows 20 HP at your duty point and the motor is 85% efficient, you need 23.5 hydraulic HP, or 23.5 × 1714 ÷ 23.8 = about 1,690 psi. Then match the spline (B fit: SAE B, 13 tooth, 16/32 pitch; C fit: SAE C, 14 tooth, 12/24 pitch) and the rotation, CW or CCW.
Bare-shaft coupling
Match rotation (CW viewed from the drive end on FAOT, FACT, FBSTF), shaft diameter and keyway, and speed. The FAOT is published for 1750 to 3450 RPM; operation outside that range is not recommended. Size motor HP from the curve at the actual speed: FAOT-6 needs 3 motor HP at 3450 RPM. On direct drive, lay a straightedge across both coupling halves at 3 or 4 positions; on belt drive, keep the pulleys in line. Coupling, guard and baseplate are not included.
Solar array and power
The Fhoton 1.1 kW controller accepts 115 to 420 V DC and up to 2,000 W, with 420 V open circuit as the absolute maximum and no more than 50 A DC short-circuit current. Size the string so cold-morning open-circuit voltage stays under 420 V, and treat 115 V as a floor, not a design point. Output is 200 V AC three-phase at 20 to 60 Hz to a 208-230 V motor. Flow follows sunlight, so size storage for night and cloudy-day demand.
What to send us
Flow (GPM), TDH or discharge pressure, suction lift and water temperature; the driver: engine preference and HP, hydraulic motor make, displacement, spline, rotation and circuit flow and pressure, or motor HP, frame, RPM and voltage; connection type (NPT, grooved or flanged); and for solar, your location, daily water demand and panel details if you already have them. See our guide to reading a pump curve for how we check the duty point.

Features That Matter on the Install
What the construction does for you once the pump is on the truck, the skid or the pad.
Back pull-out XS volute
The heavy-duty cast iron XS volute uses a back pull-out design and can be rotated during installation to line up with the piping on a truck or skid.
SAE B and C hydraulic fits
XS439-HB and XS439-HC pumps take the hydraulic motor directly on a cast iron motor mount and drive through a matching B or C fit shaft coupling, so the motor bolts to the pump frame.
CW or CCW rotation
The XS 3x4-9 is built in either rotation in bare-shaft and hydraulic versions, so the pump matches the PTO or motor direction you already have.
Heavy bearing frame
Oversized shaft, max-life bearings, external grease lubrication and a replaceable shaft sleeve on the XS carry belt loads and long duty cycles.
FMIG check valve and wear plate
A removable front cover with a built-in check valve helps priming, and the replaceable steel wear plate restores efficiency after dirty-water work.
Engine choice and low-oil shut-off
Briggs & Stratton, Honda or Kohler engines; most Honda and Kohler models have low-oil shut-off, which protects an engine left running unattended.
Fhoton MPPT and soft start
Maximum power point tracking pulls the most water from the array, and soft start reduces water hammer on long runs.
Low-flow cut-off included
Every SolarPAK ships with a C25 or F21 flow switch, which stops the pump before it runs dry when the source drops.

Frequently Asked Questions
Engine-driven, hydraulic, bare-shaft and solar pump questions we hear most.
What warranty comes with these Franklin Electric pumps?
Franklin warrants the pump against defects in material and workmanship for 12 months from installation or 24 months from manufacture, whichever occurs first, per the FACGF, FAOT and FBSTF Series Owner’s Manuals. Full terms and conditions are in the manufacturer’s manual.
Which hydraulic mount do I need, B or C?
Match the spline on your hydraulic motor. The B fit is an SAE B spline, 13 tooth, 16/32 pitch; the C fit is an SAE C spline, 14 tooth, 12/24 pitch. Then choose CW or CCW rotation and NPT or grooved ports. Send us the motor data sheet and we will confirm the model code.
How much hydraulic flow and pressure does the XS pump need?
It depends on your duty point and motor. Speed equals GPM times 231 divided by motor displacement in cubic inches per revolution, and hydraulic HP equals GPM times psi divided by 1714. We read the pump HP from the Franklin curve at your speed and duty point and give you the circuit flow and pressure to plan for.
What motor size do I need for a bare-shaft pump?
Size it from the curve at the speed you will run. At 3450 RPM the FAOT-4, FAOT-5 and FAOT-6 need 1, 2 and 3 motor HP, the FBSTF-1 to FBSTF-5 need 1 to 5 motor HP, and the FACT-8 needs 5 motor HP at 3600 RPM nominal. XS frames are selected from multi-speed curves.
Which gas engine pump handles dirty water?
The FMIG self-priming pump has a semi-open non-clogging impeller that handles small amounts of mud, sand or silt, up to 10% by volume, with a replaceable steel wear plate and a built-in check valve for priming.
How high can these pumps lift water on the suction side?
The manuals rate these pumps for a vertical distance of up to 25 ft from pump to water level, including drawdown, and less at high altitude. Friction in the suction line reduces that further, so keep the pump close to the water.
What is included in a Fhoton Surface SolarPAK?
The Fhoton solar controller, the Franklin Electric pump and motor, and a low-flow cut-off switch. Solar panels, array mounting and wiring are quoted separately once we know your flow, pressure and location.
How big a solar array does the SolarPAK need?
The 1.1 kW Fhoton controller accepts 115 to 420 V DC and up to 2,000 W, with 420 V open circuit as the absolute limit. We size the array with Franklin from your daily water demand, pressure and location, keeping cold-weather open-circuit voltage under the limit.
Are the engine battery and fuel tank included on electric-start models?
The FACGF-23K, FNG-23VM and FMIG40-18K ship without battery, cables and fuel tank. Recoil-start models include the engine fuel tank listed for each model.
What is the lead time?
Lead time depends on the model and configuration. Send us the model or order number and we will confirm availability and lead time with your quote.
Ready to Match Your Pump to Its Driver?
Send the duty point and your engine, hydraulic motor, electric motor or solar details, and we will return a Franklin Electric selection checked against the manufacturer curve.
