Grundfos builds the Hydro Multi-E and Hydro Multi-B as complete pressure-boosting systems: two or three Grundfos multistage pumps, each with its own integrated variable-speed drive, piped in parallel on one base with stainless steel manifolds, valves, sensors and a breaker cabinet, then pressure- and function-tested at the factory. Hydro Multi-E uses vertical CRE pumps, and its CRE 10, CRE 15 and CRE 20 builds carry a U.S. Department of Energy Pump Energy Index. Hydro Multi-B uses horizontal CME pumps in a system about 41 in tall.

We supply U.S. 60 Hz builds at 200-240V single and three phase and 440-480V three phase, and we size every system to the building before it ships: send us the peak flow, the pressure you need at the top fixture and your inlet pressure, or call 1-888.510.4036. If another system fits your job better, we will tell you which one. Genuine Grundfos equipment, factory-new in original packaging — sold and supported by Watermain Supply, an independent industrial supplier.

Will It Work for My Building?

The four questions buyers ask first, answered from Grundfos’s own documents.

Warranty

Grundfos warrants U.S. consumer purchases for up to 30 months from the date of manufacture on the nameplate; commercial purchases fall under clause 10 of Grundfos US Terms and Conditions of Sale.

Reliability

No single point of control: any pump with an outlet-pressure sensor can run the system, and two outlet sensors are standard. Motors carry built-in thermal protection, pumps alternate duty, and every system is pressure- and function-tested before it ships. Cartridge shaft seals and gasket kits are sold separately.

Fit

Up to 462 GPM and 475 ft on CRE, 475 GPM and 145 psi system rating on CME. Flooded or pressurized inlet, indoor installation, 41 to 180 °F water on CRE 10 to 20 (41 to 140 °F on CRE 3, CRE 5 and CME). Voltage is fixed per part number.

DOE Pump Energy Index (PEI), Explained

What the number measures, what it does not, and why it shows up in engineering specifications.

What PEI is

Since January 2020, clean-water pumps sold in the United States have had to meet a federal efficiency standard set by the U.S. Department of Energy. The yardstick is the Pump Energy Index: the pump’s energy rating (PER) divided by the rating of a pump that only just meets the standard for its type (PERSTD). A PEI of 1.00 is the legal ceiling; Grundfos notes that any pump, pump and motor, or pump, motor and controller above 1.00 can no longer be manufactured. Lower is better.

The rule covers the common commercial clean-water designs, including the radially split, multistage, vertical in-line pump that Grundfos builds as the CR and CRE. The energy rating comes from a DOE test at defined points around the pump’s best efficiency point, so every manufacturer is measured the same way and the numbers can be compared across brands.

Constant load vs variable load

There are two versions. PEICL (constant load) applies to a bare pump or a pump sold with a motor. PEIVL (variable load) applies to a pump sold with a motor and a speed controller, and it credits the energy the drive saves when demand falls. Every CRE pump in a Hydro Multi-E is sold with its drive built into the motor, so Grundfos prints PEIVL values.

How to read 0.38

A PEIVL of 0.38 means the pump, motor and drive are rated at 38% of the energy the minimally compliant baseline would use at the DOE test points — roughly 62% less. Grundfos adds two cautions worth repeating: PEI is a generalized value that cannot be used to calculate efficiency at your specific duty point, and the packaged skid itself has no PEI; the individual pumps in it do. Certified values can be looked up in the DOE Compliance Certification Database.

Why engineers ask for it. PEI gives a spec writer one comparable number across brands. On data center, healthcare and public projects where energy documentation is part of the submittal, the CRE 10, 15 and 20 builds let you answer the question with a manufacturer-printed value instead of an argument.

Why Hydro Multi-E Fits Data Centers

Water in a data center is a support system for cooling and for people. It has to stay on, it has to report to the BMS, and its load swings with the weather and the IT load.

Where it goes

Domestic water for restrooms, break rooms and kitchens; makeup water to evaporative cooling towers and adiabatic coolers; humidification, water treatment and RO feed. Grundfos lists humidifying, water treatment and process boosting among Hydro Multi-E applications.

N+1 redundancy

Size a triplex so two pumps carry the peak and the third is a running spare. Any sensor-equipped pump can take over as master, two outlet sensors are standard, and the pumps alternate so run hours stay even.

BMS and remote alarms

A CIM 500 puts the system on BACnet IP, Modbus TCP, PROFINET or EtherNet/IP. CIM 280 and CIM 550 connect to Grundfos Remote Management and iSolutions Cloud. Limit-exceeded functions can watch inlet pressure and water temperature.

Energy at part load

Pump power falls roughly with the cube of speed, so a pump at 80% speed draws about half the power it does at full speed. Hydro Multi-E runs only the pumps the load needs, slows them to hold pressure, and can lower the setpoint at low flow with proportional pressure.

Documented efficiency

IE5-class permanent-magnet motors with the drive built in, and a printed DOE PEIVL for every CRE 10 to 20 pump. Grundfos puts the saving from its motors at 7 to 9% against NEMA Premium on a typical domestic water load profile.

Commissioning

Pre-piped, pre-wired, pressure-tested and function-tested at the factory, UL listed as a package pumping system and NSF 61/372 certified as a system. Pipe filling ramps pressure up slowly on start-up to protect new piping from water hammer.

Where it stops. Hydro Multi-E tops out at 462 GPM and is rated for indoor mechanical rooms only. A hyperscale campus or a large cooling-tower makeup system above that belongs on an engineered package such as the Franklin Electric VR SpecPAK, which runs to 1,850 GPM as a triplex.

Energy figures: Grundfos Hydro Multi-E leaflet LHMESL02 (07.2024) and brochure (11.2025); the cube relation is the pump affinity law and is a general guide, not a duty-point calculation.

Maximum boost and flow read from the Grundfos curve charts (Data Booklet 99347082, pages 33 to 42) and the Grundfos brochure range maximums; heights from the booklet dimension tables.

Quick rule. Specification calls for DOE PEI, or you need more than 105 psi at high flow: Hydro Multi-E CRE 10 to 20. High pressure at under 135 GPM: CRE 3 and CRE 5. Moderate pressure, a low ceiling or a 145 psi system: Hydro Multi-B.

How Hydro Multi Compares to Other Brands

We sell A.Y. McDonald DuraMAC, DAB and Franklin Electric boosters too, so we can be straight about which one fits. Competitor figures are taken from our own product listings.

Verdict. Hydro Multi-E wins on printed DOE PEI, higher head (to 475 ft) and control redundancy without a central panel, which is why it suits data centers with an energy specification. DuraMAC IQ1000 wins where 3 in flanged stainless manifolds, lead-lag control technicians already know, and a line we stock in Houston with factory submittals per model matter more than a PEI number; it covers the same 160 to 420 GPM band at up to 150 psi. Franklin VR SpecPAK wins outright above 462 GPM or 10 HP per pump, with a touchscreen PLC and a warranty that extends to 36 months with commissioning.

Sizing and Best Practices

How we size a Hydro Multi, and what to check before it goes in.

1. Work out the boost

Required boost = pressure wanted at the highest fixture + 0.433 psi per foot of height + friction loss − minimum inlet pressure. Grundfos’s own worked example: 29 psi wanted at a fixture 136 ft above the booster, 17.4 psi of friction and 29 psi of incoming pressure gives 29 + 58.9 + 17.4 − 29 = 76.3 psi of boost, about 176 ft of head.

2. Estimate peak flow honestly

Use water supply fixture units and the Hunter curve (IPC Table 604.3) for residential and hotel buildings, and the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator for apartments and light commercial. For cooling-tower makeup, size from evaporation, drift and blowdown at design heat load. Most booster failures come from oversizing, so size to the real peak.

3. Check the limits

Inlet pressure plus the pressure against a closed valve must stay under 232 psi (CRE) or 145 psi (CME). Standard hydraulics need a flooded or pressurized inlet; suction lift needs the factory inlet-side check valve option. Do not run below 10% of one pump’s rated flow. Allow 3 ft of clearance on all sides and fit a diaphragm tank precharged to 0.7 times the setpoint.

Rule of thumb. If your duty point sits above about 70% of a build’s maximum head at design flow, step up one build. Run the sizing calculator or read our guide to commercial variable-speed boosters.

Performance

Pressure added, read from the Grundfos curve charts. Every product page carries the full table for each build at one, two and three pumps.

Pump family Builds Max boost, psi Max flow duplex, GPM Max flow triplex, GPM
CRE 3 3-6 to 3-15 79 to 197 47 71
CRE 5 5-4 to 5-16 54 to 205 89 135
CRE 10 10-2 to 10-10 41 to 205 143 212
CRE 15 15-1 to 15-5 26 to 137 250 375
CRE 20 20-1 to 20-4 28 to 114 308 462
CME 3 3-5 94 45 68
CME 5 5-3 to 5-5 56 to 94 66 99
CME 10 10-1 to 10-3 33 to 97 158 237
CME 15 15-1 to 15-3 36 to 105 231 347
CME 25 25-1 to 25-2 37 to 73 318 475

Max boost is the peak of the curve near zero flow, a ceiling rather than a working point; max flow is the end of the duplex or triplex curve. Read from Grundfos Data Booklet 99347082 (10.2025), pages 33 to 42, at a fixed 3,480 rpm, 60 Hz; CRE 5-16 capped at the brochure maximum of 475 ft. Boost in psi equals head in feet multiplied by 0.433. Ask us for the manufacturer curve at your duty point before specifying.

What Makes Hydro Multi Different

The control lives in the pumps, not in a panel.

Drive in every motor

Grundfos MLE permanent-magnet motors carry their own frequency converter and PI controller, rated above IE5. No separate VFD panel to buy, mount, wire or cool.

Multi-master control

Any pump with an outlet sensor can run the system, so losing one pump or one sensor does not stop the water. Two outlet sensors are standard.

Automatic cascade

Pumps cut in and out with demand and alternate duty, so the system runs only the pumps it needs and wear is shared.

Stop function

At low flow the system checks demand, tops up the pressure and stops, then restarts at the start pressure. A diaphragm tank at 0.7 times the setpoint keeps this smooth.

Proportional pressure

Lowers the setpoint as flow falls to offset friction loss, saving energy and keeping taps comfortable across the day.

Pipe filling

Fills empty pipework slowly, then builds to setpoint, to avoid water hammer after a shutdown or on a new building.

Dry-running protection

Inlet pressure switch or two inlet sensors on Hydro Multi-E; suction pressure switch on Hydro Multi-B. Level switch available for tank or well sources.

Factory tested

Pressure- and function-tested before it ships, with 316 stainless manifolds shaped to cut stagnant water, noise and friction loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Warranty, fit, efficiency and sizing first.

What is a Grundfos Hydro Multi-E?

A factory-built booster system with two or three Grundfos CRE vertical multistage pumps piped in parallel on one base. Each pump has an integrated variable-speed drive, and the pumps control the system between them with no separate panel.

What is the difference between Hydro Multi-E and Hydro Multi-B?

Hydro Multi-E uses vertical CRE pumps, reaches 475 ft of head and is rated to 232 psi; its CRE 10 to 20 builds carry a DOE PEI. Hydro Multi-B uses horizontal CME pumps in a 41 in tall package rated to 145 psi.

What does DOE PEI mean on a booster?

PEI is the U.S. Department of Energy Pump Energy Index: the pump energy rating divided by that of a minimally compliant pump. 1.00 is the legal limit and lower is better. On Hydro Multi-E the value applies to each CRE pump; the skid itself has no PEI.

Which Hydro Multi-E builds are DOE PEI rated?

The CRE 10, CRE 15 and CRE 20 builds, with PEI VL values from 0.38 to 0.45 depending on motor size and voltage. CRE 3 and CRE 5 are outside the DOE PEI scope, and CME pumps are not yet regulated.

Is Hydro Multi-E a good choice for a data center?

Yes for domestic water, cooling-tower makeup, humidification and water treatment up to 462 GPM: it offers N+1 duplex or triplex redundancy, multi-master control, BACnet IP or Modbus TCP through a CIM 500, and printed DOE PEI values. Above 462 GPM we would size an engineered package instead.

What warranty comes with Grundfos Hydro Multi systems?

Grundfos warrants U.S. consumer purchases for up to 30 months from the date of manufacture on the nameplate. Commercial purchases are covered under clause 10 of Grundfos US Terms and Conditions of Sale.

Does Hydro Multi-E include a pressure tank?

No. Grundfos recommends a diaphragm tank sized to the application, precharged to 0.7 times the setpoint, and lists a recommended minimum size for each pump family.

Can Hydro Multi-E draw from a tank or lift water?

Standard systems need a flooded or pressurized inlet. For suction lift, Grundfos fits the check valve on the inlet side as a factory option, and a level switch is available for tank or well sources.

Can I install a Hydro Multi outdoors?

No. Grundfos rates the system for indoor installation only, out of direct sunlight, at 32 to 104 F ambient with 3 ft of clearance on all sides.

How does Hydro Multi-E compare with the DuraMAC IQ1000?

Both cover roughly 160 to 460 GPM. Hydro Multi-E adds printed DOE PEI values and higher head; DuraMAC IQ1000 offers 3 in flanged stainless manifolds and Yaskawa control, and it is a line we stock in Houston.
