Hydrant Series

Three series cover virtually every yard-hydrant application — from compact garden installs to heavy-duty livestock and sanitary backflow-protected service.

Heavy-Duty Yard Hydrant

Series YH · Standard & Lead-Free

The workhorse Campbell hydrant. Available in 1 ft through 8 ft bury depths in both standard brass (YH-1 through YH-8) and lead-free (YH-1LF through YH-8LF). Cast iron upper with brass valve assembly. Designed for farms, livestock, irrigation, and commercial high-flow service.

Bury Depths1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ft
Inlet3/4 in · 1 in NPT
BodyCast iron + brass
Lead-FreeYH-XLF series

Compact Yard Hydrant

Lighter Body · Residential Service

Lower-cost hydrant for residential garden, lawn, and light-duty applications. Same frostproof valve mechanism as the heavy-duty series in a slimmer cast body. Ideal for Houston and Gulf Coast where freeze depth is minimal — you don't need the heavy-duty wall thickness for shallow bury.

Sanitary Hydrant (ASSE 1057)

Backflow Protected · Code-Required

ASSE 1057 certified sanitary yard hydrant with internal vacuum breaker. Required by code wherever cross-connection risk exists — irrigation, livestock troughs, chemical mixing, hose-end fertilizers. Brass body with stainless internals. The only hydrant approved for direct connection to non-potable downstream uses.

Frostproof Wall Faucet

Building Exterior · Anti-Freeze

Frostproof wall faucet for exterior building walls. Wall-thickness lengths from 4 in to 14 in to suit different construction. Drains automatically when valve closes — freeze-resistant when hose is removed. Brass body with vacuum-breaker option for code compliance.

Bury Depth Selector

Always specify bury depth equal to or greater than your local frost line. The shut-off valve sits at the bottom of the hydrant — if it's above the frost line, the hydrant freezes and ruptures.

Region / Climate Frost Line Recommended Bury Suggested Series
Houston / Gulf Coast 0 – 6 in 1 ft · 2 ft Compact YH-1, YH-2
Central Texas 6 – 12 in 2 ft Compact YH-2 or Heavy YH-2
North Texas / Oklahoma 12 – 18 in 3 ft Heavy-Duty YH-3 or YH-3LF
Arkansas / Louisiana 6 – 12 in 2 ft · 3 ft Heavy-Duty YH-2 / YH-3
New Mexico / Plains 18 – 30 in 3 ft · 4 ft Heavy-Duty YH-3, YH-4
Northern States 30 – 60 in 5 ft · 6 ft · 7 ft Heavy-Duty YH-5, YH-6, YH-7
Extreme Cold / Alaska 60+ in 8 ft Heavy-Duty YH-8

Rule of thumb: Add 12 in to your local frost line and round up to the next bury depth available. Better to over-bury than under-bury — a frozen hydrant always splits.

Replacement Parts

Hydrants are field-serviceable. Most leaks and drips can be repaired with a $10–$20 part — not a full hydrant replacement. We stock the complete Campbell HP-series parts list.

Part Number Description Symptom / Use
HP-1 Yard Hydrant Head Cracked head · complete top assembly replacement
HP-4 Yard Hydrant Connector Connecting rod end · wear or strip
HP-5 Molded Plunger Hydrant drips when off · #1 wear part
HP-6 Hydrant Link (2 ea) Handle action loose · broken link
HP-7 Handle Bolt Lost or stripped handle bolt
HP-8 Handle Nut Lost or stripped handle nut
Riser Pipe Galvanized Riser (cut to length) Body corroded or damaged below grade
Steel Rod Assembly Plunger to Handle Rod Rod broken or bent

The HP-5 plunger is the most-replaced part by far. If your hydrant drips when shut off, replace the plunger first — it's a 10-minute fix and the brass valve seat almost always survives.

Installation Best Practices

Field-tested guidance from installers across Texas and the Gulf Coast. Follow these and your hydrants last 20+ years.

Bed in Gravel

Always set hydrant on a 4–6 in pea-gravel bed. Allows the drain port to weep into the soil without saturating the surrounding earth or freezing the drain hole.

Drain Hole Down

The hydrant body has a small drain hole near the valve. It must point down and clear — covered drain holes mean trapped water above the frost line. Common cause of split hydrants.

Plumb the Riser

Use a torpedo level on the riser body before backfilling. Out-of-plumb hydrants bind on the steel rod, wear plungers fast, and stop draining properly.

Concrete Anchor (Optional)

For high-use commercial or livestock hydrants, set a 12 in concrete collar around the riser at grade. Prevents handle leverage from working the riser loose over time.

Specify Lead-Free for New Installs

Federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act (2014) requires ≤0.25% lead by weight on potable wetted surfaces. Specify the YH-XLF suffix on all new residential and commercial installs.

Sanitary Where Required

Any hydrant connected to irrigation, livestock, fertilizer mixing, or chemical sprayers requires ASSE 1057 sanitary models. Many jurisdictions and the IPC require it on all exterior hydrants regardless of use.

Application Selection

Residential — Houston

Use Compact 1 ft or 2 ft bury. Frost line is essentially zero. Add lead-free suffix for new installs. Specify sanitary if connecting to irrigation.

Farm / Livestock

Use Heavy-Duty YH-2 or YH-3 with 1 in inlet. Higher flow for trough fill. ASSE 1057 sanitary required if hose can fall in trough water.

Commercial Building Exterior

Use Frostproof Wall Faucet matched to wall thickness. Specify integrated vacuum breaker for code compliance. Brass body resists vandalism better than plastic.

Irrigation Connection Point

Always use Sanitary ASSE 1057 yard hydrant. Cross-connection risk from drip emitters, soaker hoses, and hose-end fertilizer feeders — sanitary hydrant is non-negotiable.

Northern Frost-Belt

Use Heavy-Duty YH-5 through YH-8. Always exceed the local frost line by 12 in. Heavy-duty wall thickness handles the longer riser without flex.

Off-Grid / Remote

Use Heavy-Duty bury matched to depth. Pair with a Campbell pitcher pump if no electric pump — the hydrant becomes the well outlet itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "frostproof" actually mean?
The shut-off valve is at the bottom of the hydrant body, below the frost line. When you close the handle, water above the valve drains out through a small drain hole into the gravel bed. No standing water above frost line = nothing to freeze and split.
How do I pick the right bury depth?
Match the bury depth to your local frost line plus 12 in safety margin. Houston: 1–2 ft is fine. North Texas: 3 ft. Northern states: 5–8 ft. The bury depth is the dimension from grade down to the bottom of the hydrant body — not total hydrant length.
My hydrant drips when shut off — what's wrong?
99% of the time it's the HP-5 molded plunger. The rubber wears, the plunger no longer seats fully on the brass valve seat, and water leaks past. It's a 10-minute fix — remove the head, pull the rod, swap the plunger, reinstall. Order a spare plunger with every new hydrant.
Do I need a lead-free hydrant?
For potable water service installed after January 2014: yes. Federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act requires ≤0.25% lead by weight on wetted surfaces. Specify the LF suffix (e.g., YH-2LF). Repair parts are not subject to the rule, so existing standard hydrants can be repaired in place.
What's ASSE 1057 and when do I need it?
ASSE 1057 is the standard for frostproof yard hydrants with backflow protection. Required by most plumbing codes whenever the hydrant could be connected to a non-potable downstream — irrigation drip systems, livestock troughs, chemical sprayers, hose-end fertilizers. The internal vacuum breaker stops contaminated water from being siphoned back into the supply.
Can I install a hydrant on PEX or poly pipe?
Yes — the inlet is 3/4 in or 1 in NPT, so adapt with a brass insert fitting and stainless clamp. Make sure the supply line is also rated for sub-grade installation (PEX-A or 200 psi poly). Avoid copper at the connection — thermal expansion stresses cast-iron threads over time.
Why is mine not draining anymore?
Drain hole is plugged — usually with sediment, mineral buildup, or because the gravel bed eroded and dirt covers it. Pull the hydrant, clear the drain hole with a wire brush or compressed air, and reset on fresh pea gravel. If the hole is corroded shut, replace the hydrant.
Heavy-Duty vs Compact — honest difference?
Heavy-Duty has thicker cast wall, stronger handle leverage assembly, and the 1 in inlet option for higher flow. Compact uses the same valve mechanism in a lighter body for residential service. For Houston residential garden use you don't need heavy-duty — for livestock, commercial, or anywhere a hose gets yanked hard, go heavy-duty every time.
Do you stock all bury depths?
1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 ft heavy-duty (standard and lead-free) ship same-day from Houston. 6, 7, 8 ft deeper-bury models are typically 2–5 day lead time. Compact 1–4 ft and sanitary 2–6 ft same-day. Wall faucets and replacement parts always in stock.
