Widely separated pipe ends? For applications where a standard-body coupling cannot span the gap, the long-body Dresser Style 40 bridges wider pipe separations without spool pieces or additional fittings.
View Style 40 →

The Dresser Style 38 is a bolted mechanical coupling engineered for flexible, leakproof connections on steel pipe in water, wastewater, and industrial piping systems. No threading, beveling, or precise pipe alignment required — installs with standard wrenches only.

The resilient gasket design absorbs vibration, accommodates thermal pipe movement, and allows angular deflection — enabling curves to be laid using straight pipe lengths without bends or elbows. Compliant with AWWA C219.

Tool-Only Installation
No threading, beveling, or exact alignment required. Installs with standard wrenches directly in the field.
Absorbs Pipe Movement
Resilient gaskets absorb vibration and accommodate thermal expansion and contraction at the joint.
Angular Deflection
Permits angular deflection — curves can be laid with straight pipe, reducing fittings cost and labor.

The Style 38 is supplied with one of six gasket compounds depending on service media, temperature, and chemical compatibility. Select the gasket matching your application from variant options at checkout or contact us for compounds not shown.

Grade 27 Buna-S (Standard)
Styrene-butadiene rubber. General water and wastewater service. NSF 61 and NSF 372 certified for potable water.
Grade 42 Buna-N
Nitrile rubber. Petroleum products, oils, hydrocarbons, and fuel service.
Fluorocarbon (Viton)

Butyl
Gases, chlorinated water, and ozone service. Excellent gas permeation resistance.
EPDM
Potable water service. NSF 61 and NSF 372 certified. UV and ozone resistant.
High-Temperature
Service up to 1,200°F where extreme heat exceeds standard rubber compound limits.

For highly corrosive service, the Style 38 is available in all-stainless steel construction (Type 316 standard; Type 304 substitutable). Middle ring: Type 316 SS per ASTM A240 with No. 1 mill finish (optional A380 pickle-and-passivation finish). Followers: Type 316 SS only — single-piece thru 12 in, 2-piece bar follower for larger sizes. Bolts: Type 316 with rolled threads. Nuts: Type 316 with Xylan coating. Meets AWWA C219.

SS Working Pressure: 150 PSI · Test Pressure: 250 PSI. Stainless steel couplings are custom-built and made to order with extended lead times — consult factory for project requirements.

⚠ Seal Only — Pipe Joint Must Be Anchored
The Style 38 provides a pressure seal only. When pipe pullout could occur, the pipe joint must be independently anchored or restrained. Failure to anchor the joint could result in escaping line content and cause property damage, serious injury, or death. Confirm restraint requirements before installation.

No special tools required beyond a torque wrench and basic hand tools.

  1. Pipe End PreparationClean all dirt, rust, oil, and loose scale from pipe end. Inspect gasket seating surface — any gouges or grooves must be corrected before assembly.
  2. Mark Center PointsMeasure back on each pipe end: ½ the middle ring length plus 2 in. Chalk mark both ends to center the coupling over the joint.
  3. Position FollowersSlide the follower(s) over the pipe end(s) before assembling any other components.
  4. LubricateWipe gaskets clean. Lubricate each gasket, pipe OD, and middle ring flares with soapy water or non-petroleum lubricant. Use antifreeze in freezing weather.
  5. Assemble Middle RingSlide lubricated gaskets over each pipe end, then assemble the middle ring onto one pipe end.
  6. Join Pipe EndsStab second pipe end into middle ring. Center between chalk marks. Pipe end must extend past end of gasket by minimum 1 in after any angular deflection.
  7. Install FastenersInstall all bolts and hex nuts. Draw up finger tight before torquing.
  8. Torque SequenceTighten nuts on opposite sides in a cross-pattern, drawing followers up evenly. Do not fully torque one side before the other.
Bolt Diameter Required Torque (Ft. Lbs.)
3/8 in & ½ in 35
5/8 in 75
¾ in 90
Important
For single-gasket products, reduce all torque values by one-half. Stainless steel bolts must be lubricated before installation to prevent thread galling.
