DAB submersible well pumps in two borehole diameters. The 3 in S3 fits narrow cased wells at 5, 10 and 15 GPM; the 4 in S4 covers 5 to 25 GPM as a complete pump and up to 90 GPM as a bare pump end. Both use sand-resistant technopolymer hydraulics and stainless construction, with an NSF/ANSI 61 pump end and UL/CSA water-filled Tesla motors β 115 V or 230 V, 2-wire or 3-wire, all US 60 Hz. DAB Pumps is an Italian manufacturer with a U.S. operation in Ladson, South Carolina. Its groundwater line puts a full multistage well pump inside two borehole diameters on one platform: technopolymer impellers carried on stainless steel adjustment rings, a stainless liner, shaft and coupling, an integrated suction filter, and a removable non-return valve. The pump end is NSF/ANSI 61 approved for drinking water and the water-filled Tesla motor is UL and CSA listed and rated for variable-frequency-drive operation from 30 to 60 Hz.
Watermain Supply supplies the U.S. 60 Hz S3 and S4 range with correct voltages and two-wire or three-wire motors, backed by an engineering-led sales team that sizes to your well depth, flow and inlet pressure. This page compares both families and every nominal series, and puts DAB head to head with the A.Y. McDonald / Baker and Grundfos pumps we also carry, so you can select on the numbers β or call 1-888.510.4036 and we will size it for you.

Sizing rule of thumb. Total dynamic head equals the pumping water level (static depth + drawdown), plus the pressure-tank setpoint at 2.31 ft per psi, plus friction in the drop pipe and service line. Size the pump to deliver your GPM at that head, and keep the duty point below roughly 70 percent of the series shut-off head for efficient, long-life operation. Worked example: 12 GPM, pumping level 140 ft, 50 psi tank (115 ft), 15 ft friction β ~270 ft TDH β an S4 15 GPM at 1β1.5 HP lands it comfortably below shut-off.

What Makes These Pumps Different
The engineering shared across the S3 and S4, and why it matters in the well.
Sand Resistant
Technopolymer impellers on stainless steel adjustment rings pass up to 5.42 lb/inΒ³ of sand β a real edge in silty and sandy wells that wear brass and cast iron.
Stainless Hydraulics
Liner, shaft, coupling, integrated suction filter and cable guard in stainless steel, with micro-cast AISI 304 suction and delivery supports.
Water-Filled Tesla Motor
A Kingsbury self-centering thrust bearing cooled and lubricated with a water and glycol mixture, built to carry high axial load over a long service life.
Two Diameters, One Platform
The 3 in S3 and 4 in S4 share hydraulics and certification, so a driller stocks one family for narrow and standard bores alike.
VFD Ready
Every motor runs on a variable frequency drive from 30 to 60 Hz, so the same pump can hold constant pressure on a Tesla or CUE-style drive.
2-Wire or 3-Wire
Two-wire installs with no control box; three-wire adds a matched box for easier field diagnosis and restart.
Built-In Non-Return Valve
A removable technopolymer check valve is integrated in the pump end β no separate inline check to add or fail.
Drinking Water Certified
NSF/ANSI 61 pump end for potable contact, with UL and CSA listed motors.

Where Baker wins: a domestically built pump, a choice of wetted material (silicon bronze for aggressive water, thermoplastic for cost, stainless for durability), the deepest large-diameter range for municipal and agricultural flow, and a line we stock and are authorized on. Where DAB wins: a 3 in option Baker does not offer, sand-resistant technopolymer hydraulics as standard, and a lower price on standard 3 in and 4 in residential wells.

Premium industrial / groundwater
Where Grundfos wins: a premium pedigree, optional 316 and 904L stainless and special elastomers for corrosive or high-temperature groundwater, a permanent-magnet 3 in SQ, and a broader high-head SP map for demanding waterworks. Where DAB wins: 3 in and 4 in on one platform, the same sand-passing design a tier down on price, and better value on standard residential and irrigation duty. Both are imported stainless pumps β the decision is build tier and budget, not country of origin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from homeowners, drillers and engineers selecting a submersible well pump.
What is the difference between the DAB S3 and S4?
Both are stainless multistage submersibles on the same sand-resistant platform. The S3 is a 3 in pump for narrow cased wells at 5, 10 and 15 GPM, 0.5 to 1 HP, 230V two-wire. The S4 is the 4 in workhorse: complete pumps from 5 to 25 GPM at 0.5 to 1.5 HP in two-wire or three-wire, and bare pump ends to 90 GPM and 10 HP. Pick the family by well diameter first.
Will an S4 fit my well?
The S4 needs a cased well 4 in or larger. For a 3 in bore, the S3 is the pump that fits, where most competitor 4 in ranges cannot go.
Do I need a control box?
Two-wire models do not; the capacitor and overload are in the motor. Three-wire single-phase models require the matching DAB Tesla control box, listed in the components collection.
115V or 230V?
115V is offered on 0.5 HP only; everything above is 230V single phase, with three-phase on larger pump-end builds. Confirm against your service before ordering.
Can I buy just the pump end?
Yes. S4 pump ends from 5 to 90 GPM let you pair the hydraulic end with the motor you specify, or replace a worn end without a new motor.
Are these safe for drinking water?
The DAB pump ends are NSF/ANSI 61 approved and the Tesla motors are UL and CSA listed.
How does DAB compare to Grundfos?
Grundfos splits the range across two lines, SQ for 3 in and SP for 4 in and 6 in, with optional 316 and 904L stainless and a broader high-head map. DAB keeps 3 in and 4 in on one platform and matches the sand-resistant approach a tier down on price.
How does DAB compare to A.Y. McDonald / Baker?
Baker is US-built with a choice of wetted material, the widest large-diameter range to 1100 GPM, and it is a line we stock and are authorized on. DAB undercuts on price for standard 3 in and 4 in wells and offers a 3 in pump Baker does not.
How deep can they run?
Maximum immersion is 984 ft for the S4 and 490 ft for the S3.
Do they handle sand?
Yes. Technopolymer impellers on stainless adjustment rings pass up to 5.42 lb/inΒ³ of sand, and the motors run on a VFD from 30 to 60 Hz for constant pressure.
Ready to Size Your Well Pump?
Send us your well depth, required GPM and pressure setpoint. We will respond with a sized DAB selection, the motor and control box to match, and lead time β or tell you if Grundfos or Baker is the better fit.
