Compression Fitting Types

Compression fittings use a mechanical seal — tighten the nut and a rubber gasket compresses around the pipe OD. No glue, no threading, no specialized tools. Three material families cover the typical pipe types in well, irrigation, and water-service work.

Compression Fitting Best Practices

Compression fittings work brilliantly when installed correctly — and leak forever when installed wrong. The fundamentals here prevent the most common field problems.

Square Cut Always

The pipe end must be cut perpendicular to the pipe axis for the compression gasket to seal evenly. Use a plastic pipe cutter (PPC4, PPC5-6) on poly and PVC. A hacksaw works on steel but deburr both inside and outside before inserting.

Insert Pipe Fully

Mark the pipe at the proper insertion depth before tightening. Pipe must seat against the internal stop — partial insertion = the gasket compresses around an empty section and the joint blows under pressure.

Match SDR for Hanflo

Hanflo male adapters come in SDR 80/100, 125/160, and 200 variants. Match the adapter SDR to your pipe SDR — mismatched SDR = wrong gasket size = chronic slow leak. Most well drop pipe is SDR 100 or 160; check the pipe stenciling.

Hand-Tighten Plus Wrench

Tighten the nut hand-snug, then add 1–1.5 wrench turns. Never hammer or extend the wrench beyond shoulder leverage — over-torque crushes the gasket out of round and damages the threaded body. The seal is achieved by the gasket squeeze, not raw clamping force.

Pressure-Test Before Burying

Compression fittings can be slow to seat — pressurize the line and let it sit for 30+ minutes before burying. Re-tighten any fittings that show weeping, then re-test. Buried leaks cost 5× what wellhead leaks cost to repair.

Galvanized Pipe Condition Matters

The GCC galvanized coupling SBR gasket seals best on smooth, round pipe. If the galvanized pipe is heavily pitted, scaled, or out-of-round, clean the joint surface to bare metal with a wire brush before installing. Consider replacing the pipe section if pitting is severe.

Application Selection

Emergency PVC Main Repair

Use CC4 (1 in), CC8 (2 in), or CC12 (3 in) PVC compression coupling. No glue, no cure time — tighten and pressurize. Standard for emergency leak response.

Heavy-Duty Irrigation Main Repair

Use 118-30 (3 in) or 118-40 (4 in) Flo-Span. Heavier wall, larger gasket area. Standard for commercial and municipal irrigation main repairs.

Well Drop Pipe Connection

Use Hanflo MA male adapter matched to your pipe SDR. Connects poly drop pipe to threaded brass or PVC fittings. SDR 100 standard for residential; SDR 160 or 200 for commercial / deeper wells.

Poly Service Line to Brass Fitting

Use Hanflo MA20-80/100 (3/4 in) or MA25-80/100 (1 in). Connects standard residential poly service line to brass NPT thread (yard hydrant, water meter, tank tee).

Galvanized Pipe Repair

Use GCC4 (1 in) or GCC6 (1 1/2 in). Joins or repairs galvanized service line without cutting threads. Long-body design tolerates pitted/out-of-round pipe.

Pipe Size Transition

Use reducing male adapters (MA1525, MA2532, MA3225). Single fitting handles both compression-to-thread and pipe-size change. Saves a coupling + reducer combo.

High-Pressure Booster Discharge

Use SDR 200 male adapters (MA25-200, MA2532-200, MA32-200). Higher pressure rating for booster pump discharge and pressurized commercial systems.

Large 6 in Service / Main

Use CC24 (6 in PVC compression). Standard 6 in repair coupling for irrigation main, commercial water service, and municipal supply work. Big enough for serious flow without restriction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Compression vs solvent-weld PVC — when do I use each?
Solvent weld (glue) is the long-life, lowest-cost, lowest-profile option for new installs and any joint where you have time to drain the line, prime, glue, and cure (typically 1–2 hours full cure). Compression is for repairs, emergency response, and any joint where you can't drain the line for solvent welding. Compression also handles minor pipe out-of-round better than glue.
What does SDR mean and why does it matter?
SDR = Standard Dimension Ratio — the ratio of pipe OD to wall thickness. Lower SDR = thicker wall = higher pressure rating. SDR 80 and 100 are common for low-pressure irrigation. SDR 125 and 160 are mid-range for residential well drop pipe. SDR 200 is high-pressure for commercial. Hanflo male adapters are SDR-specific — using the wrong SDR adapter on your pipe means the gasket doesn't seat correctly and you get a chronic slow leak.
How tight should I tighten a compression fitting?
Hand-tight, then 1–1.5 turns with a wrench. The seal is achieved by the gasket compressing around the pipe OD — not by raw clamping force. Over-torque crushes the gasket out of round (causing immediate leaks) or strips the threads (causing eventual joint failure). If it's still weeping after 1.5 turns, depressurize and check the pipe insertion depth.
Can I use Hanflo on PVC pipe?
No — Hanflo is sized for polyethylene (poly) pipe ODs, which differ from PVC ODs at the same nominal size. Use CC-series PVC compression couplings on PVC. Use Hanflo on poly. Cross-applying these will cause guaranteed leaks.
Is the GCC galvanized coupling lead-free?
The GCC body is galvanized steel — not technically a brass lead-free question. Galvanized is acceptable for non-potable industrial service (cattle troughs, irrigation, washdown). For potable water, use PVC, brass, or stainless — galvanized internally rusts over decades and contaminates drinking water. Most modern residential potable installs avoid galvanized entirely.
Why is the Hanflo male adapter pricier than the PVC version?
Hanflo MA adapters use a brass insert, machined gasket seat, and SDR-specific gasket sized to the exact poly pipe OD. PVC compression couplings (CC) are simpler — molded plastic body with a generic gasket. Hanflo lasts longer and seals better on poly, but at higher cost. Use CC for PVC pipe and Hanflo for poly — don't substitute.
What's the difference between CC and Flo-Span 118 series?
CC series (CC12, CC16) are standard PVC compression couplings — lower cost, lighter wall, suitable for typical service. Flo-Span (118-30, 118-40) are heavy-duty repair couplings with thicker wall, larger gasket area, and longer body span — designed for commercial and municipal main repairs where the pipe ends might not align perfectly. Spend the extra for Flo-Span on critical mains.
Can I reuse a compression fitting after taking it apart?
Once or twice, yes — if the gasket isn't deformed and the threaded body isn't damaged. Always inspect the gasket for cuts, flat spots, or compression set. Cheap insurance: order a new fitting for any reuse on a critical line. The fitting cost is small relative to the labor of digging up a leaking buried joint.
Pressure rating — how do I know what my fitting handles?
PVC CC compression couplings: typically 150–200 psi at 73°F, derating at higher temps. Hanflo MA-200 adapters: 200 psi. GCC galvanized: 250 psi. Always check the catalog spec for the exact rating — and remember working pressure should be at most half the burst pressure for safety margin. Booster discharge and commercial installs may need the higher-rated SDR 200 variants.
