Dresser Industrial Couplings

Style 38 Coupling
Cast / Ductile Iron

A field-proven bolted sleeve coupling delivering flexible, leakproof connections on steel pipe — no threading, beveling, or precise alignment required.

½? – 400?+ OD
Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coated
AWWA C111 / ANSI A21.11 Bolts
Up to 1,500 PSI
Stainless Upgrade Available

The Dresser Style 38 is a time-tested bolted sleeve coupling engineered for flexible, leakproof connections on steel pipe across a virtually unlimited size range — from ½? ID up to over 400? OD. With decades of proven field service, it's the go-to choice wherever rigid fittings are impractical or where pipe movement, vibration, or minor misalignment is a factor.

Resilient gaskets absorb vibration and accommodate pipe movement in all directions. Curved pipeline routes can be laid with straight pipe lengths, eliminating the need for costly custom bends. Installation requires only a wrench — no welding, threading, or beveling — making it accessible to standard crews regardless of weather conditions.

Followers are available in cast or ductile iron for standard applications, with malleable iron used on sizes ½? through 1½?. For severe corrosive environments, an all-stainless steel variant (Type 304 or Type 316) is available with matching gasket compounds.

??
Tool-Only Installation
No threading, beveling, or exact pipe alignment required. A wrench is all it takes — safe, fast, and weather-independent.
??
Flexible Joint
Accommodates angular deflection, end movement, and minor misalignment. Curved routes built from straight pipe runs.
??
Unlimited Size Range
Standard catalog sizes from ½? ID to 48?+ OD. Custom fabrication available for any pipe OD or special condition — consult factory.
???
Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coating
Factory-applied FBE on followers and middle ring provides corrosion protection for buried and wet service environments.
??
Vibration Absorption
Resilient Dresser gaskets isolate and absorb vibration and thermal pipe movement, protecting adjoining system components.
??
Multiple Gasket Compounds
Available in Buna-S, Buna-N, EPDM, Butyl, and Viton® for compatibility across a wide range of fluids and service temperatures.

? Light Pattern Note
Couplings marked as Light Pattern carry a standard pressure rating of 150 PSI. Standard-pattern working pressures are calculated via Barlow's formula at one-half minimum yield of the middle ring material. Always confirm selection against your specific pipe OD and service conditions.

Installation — General Guidance
Tighten bolts uniformly and alternately across opposing bolt positions to maintain even gasket compression. Refer to the Dresser Style 38 Torque Guide for specified torque values by pipe size and bolt diameter. Adequate thrust restraint or blocking must be provided where pipe movement could cause disengagement — this coupling does not provide axial restraint unless a restraining version is specified.
