Dresser Style 38 Bolted Coupling

The most widely specified bolted coupling for steel pipe in water, gas, and industrial distribution β€” available with Grade 27, 42, and 365 gaskets from Β½" through 36".

The Dresser Style 38 is a two-bolt, split-sleeve bolted coupling that has been the standard for steel pipe connections for over a century. Its design compensates for minor pipe misalignment, end irregularities, and thermal expansion β€” without welding or threading. It allows approximately 1–3Β° of angular deflection and limited axial movement.

⭐ Why It Outsells Everything Else

The Style 38 works on virtually any steel pipe OD without modification. One part number covers multiple wall thicknesses. Grade 27, 42, or 365 gaskets fit the same body β€” making it the single coupling that covers water, gas, oil, and industrial applications.

Style 38 vs. Style 40

Style 38 (regular body) is the standard choice β€” compact, low cost, excellent for field repairs and new construction. Style 40 (long body, 12" ring) is specified when you need greater pull-out resistance or higher moment load capacity. Both use identical follower rings and gaskets.

Style 38 Installation Guide

Correct installation is critical to achieving a leak-free, long-service-life connection. Follow these steps for all Dresser bolted couplings.

01
πŸ”
Inspect & Measure Pipe OD
Verify pipe OD using calibrated OD tape or calipers at two points 90Β° apart. OD must match the coupling's rated range β€” not nominal size.

A "4-inch" pipe may be IPS (4.500"), cast iron (4.800"), or other. Always match coupling to measured OD.
02
🧹
Clean & Prepare Pipe Ends
Wire brush the pipe surface minimum 4" from each end (6" for Style 40). Remove all rust, scale, mill coating, tar wrapping, and burrs. Gasket seating surface must be clean bare metal or intact epoxy.
Do not use petroleum-based lubricants with Grade 27 (SBR) gaskets. Soap solution only.
03
πŸ’§
Lubricate Gaskets
Apply a light coat of neutral soap solution to the inside of each end gasket and the pipe in the seating area. Prevents gasket tearing during assembly and ensures proper seating.
04
πŸ”©
Assemble Coupling
Slide follower rings onto each pipe end β€” beveled face toward pipe end. Slide end gaskets with split facing top. Center middle ring over the gap. Bring follower rings to middle ring and install bolts hand-tight.
05
πŸ”§
Torque Bolts to Spec
Tighten bolts alternately and uniformly β€” never tighten one fully before the other. Torque in equal increments to final spec. Gap between follower rings and middle ring should be equal on both sides.
Do not exceed maximum torque β€” will cut gaskets and cause leaks.
06
βœ…
Pressure Test & Inspect
Slowly bring to operating pressure. Inspect all bolts for uniform gap. If weeping occurs, depressurize and re-torque that end only. Never re-torque under full pressure. Gap must be equal on both sides.

πŸ“ How to Specify a Reinforcing Sleeve

Provide: (1) Nominal pipe size. (2) Measured OD. (3) Required sleeve length (defect span + 6" overlap each side). (4) Operating pressure. (5) Pipe material (steel vs. cast iron). Contact sales@watermainsupply.com for sizing assistance.

Top Seller Β· Line Termination

Style 31 Line Caps

The standard Dresser solution for permanently capping steel and cast iron pipe dead ends β€” no welding, no threading, field installable.

The Style 31 Line Cap provides a permanent mechanical closure for plain-end steel and cast iron pipe using the same elastomeric gasket sealing system as the Style 38 coupling. One end seals against the pipe OD; the other is closed with a steel disc. Allows future reconnection β€” remove cap, cut back, reconnect with a coupling.

Steel vs. Cast Iron Variants

Style 31 is available for both steel pipe OD and cast iron pipe OD β€” they are not interchangeable. A "4-inch" steel pipe (4.500" OD) and a "4-inch" cast iron pipe (4.800"/5.000" OD) require different part numbers. Always measure the actual pipe OD before ordering.

Technical FAQ

Common Questions

What's the difference between Style 38 and Style 40?
Style 38 uses a shorter middle ring while Style 40 uses a 12" ring. Style 40 provides greater pull-out resistance and higher moment load capacity. Both use identical follower rings and gaskets.
Can I use Grade 27 gaskets on a gas line?
Yes β€” Grade 27 Buna S is standard for natural gas distribution piping. However, do not use Grade 27 with LP gas (propane/butane), crude oil, refined petroleum products, or aromatic solvents. Use Grade 42 for those services.
How do I identify the gasket grade in an existing coupling?
Check the part number suffix: -011 = Grade 27, -013 = Armored Grade 27, -081 = Grade 42, -134 = Armored Grade 42, -345 = Grade 365. If unknown, Grade 42 is the safer replacement choice for any petroleum-adjacent service.
What pipe preparation is required for Style 38?
Clean bare metal or intact epoxy in the gasket seating area β€” minimum 4" from each pipe end. Remove all rust, scale, tar wrapping, mill varnish, and burrs. A smooth surface ensures proper gasket seating.
When should I use Style 220 instead of Style 110?
Specify Style 220 when operating pressure exceeds the Style 110 rating for the pipe size, or when the defect is more severe or the pipe wall is more compromised. Style 220 has a heavier wall for higher-pressure rehabilitation.
Can Style 128 flange adapters be used on plastic pipe?
No β€” Style 128 is designed for steel and cast/ductile iron pipe only. The elastomeric gasket seals against a rigid pipe OD and cannot accommodate the deflection of plastic pipe under bolt load.
Are armored gaskets required for buried service?
Armored gaskets are required when: (1) pipe surface is rough or corroded; (2) pipe is mechanically cut leaving a rough end; (3) soil is highly corrosive; or (4) over-tightening is a risk. Normal conditions with smooth pipe β€” plain gaskets are appropriate.
How do I order replacement gaskets for an existing coupling?
Identify the coupling model and cross-reference to the Style 3038 gasket by pipe OD and gasket section dimension. If the model is unknown, measure the gasket section with calipers. Contact sales@watermainsupply.com for cross-reference help.
