Dresser Style 128 Flange Adapter

Mechanical Coupling-to-Flange Transition — Steel & Cast Iron Pipe, 3 in through 24 in

Overview

The Dresser Style 128 Flange Adapter is a fabricated steel fitting that converts a plain-end pipe into a flanged connection without welding, threading, or costly pipe modification. One end uses the proven Dresser coupling design — a wedge-section rubber gasket compressed by a follower ring and AWWA bolts — to seal against the pipe OD. The opposite end is a full-face steel flange that bolts directly to any mating AWWA C-207 Class D flanged fitting, valve, pump, or appurtenance.

The Style 128 is available for both steel pipe and cast/ductile iron pipe across a full range of nominal sizes from 3 in through 24 in. Where standard flanges are not adequate, Dresser can fabricate to ANSI 150, ANSI 300, or other U.S. and international flange standards. An insulating design is available for applications requiring cathodic isolation, and a lock-pin variant can be supplied to anchor the coupling against pipe pullout under pressure thrust.

Key Features

  • No Pipe Welding or Threading Required: Couples to plain-end pipe using the same gasketed wedge-seal design as the Style 38 — installs with standard wrenches.
  • AWWA C-207 Class D Flange Standard: Full-face steel flange drilled to AWWA C-207 Class D as standard. Higher-pressure flanges to ANSI 150 and 300 available on request.
  • Full Size Coverage: Available for steel pipe and cast/ductile iron pipe from 3 in through 24 in nominal.
  • Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coating: Interior and exterior corrosion protection as standard. RED-D shopcoat optional for additional protection during storage and installation.
  • Insulating Option: Insulating gasket and hardware available for cathodic protection applications where metal-to-metal contact must be broken at the flange face.
  • Lock-Pin Option: Can be custom-fabricated with locking pins (Style 167 mechanism) to prevent pipe pullout under pressure thrust — critical for unanchored installations.
  • 150 PSI MAOP All Sizes: Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure of 150 PSI in all sizes. Higher-pressure designs available from factory.

Installation Instructions

  1. Surface Preparation: Clean pipe end of all dirt, rust, scale, and oil. Inspect the gasket seating area for gouges or deep grooves.
  2. Slide Follower: Slide the follower ring over the pipe end with the beveled face toward the pipe end.
  3. Lubricate & Install Gasket: Wipe gasket clean. Lubricate gasket, pipe OD, and body ring flare with soapy water or non-petroleum lubricant.
  4. Seat Body Ring: Slide the gasket over the pipe end and push the body ring (with integral flange) against the gasket, seating the gasket in the ring flare.
  5. Install Hardware: Thread follower bolts and nuts, draw up finger tight.
  6. Final Torque: Tighten in a cross pattern, alternating sides, until all nuts reach recommended torque (5/8 in bolts: 75 Ft. Lbs.). Verify torque before connecting to mating flange.
  7. Flange Connection: Bolt the Style 128 flange face directly to the mating valve, fitting, or pump flange using appropriate flange bolts and gasket per AWWA or applicable standard.

? ANCHORAGE REQUIRED: The Style 128 provides a pressure seal only at the coupling end. Where pipe pullout could occur under pressure thrust, the assembly MUST be anchored or the lock-pin option specified. Failure to anchor where required can result in pipe separation, property damage, injury, or death.
