Full Circle Repair Clamps

Smith-Blair full circle repair clamps are the industry standard for stopping leaks on water mains, gas lines, and wastewater pipe without taking the system out of service.

Full circle clamps wrap 360° around the pipe, compressed by through-bolts to create a watertight seal over cracks, pits, or defective joints. Three tiers cover every service condition: Low alloy body + alloy bolts (226/227/228) for standard buried service; low alloy + stainless bolts for moderate soils; all-stainless (261/262/263) for marine or high-chloride environments.

How to Choose the Right Clamp Style

226: Small to medium pipe (OD 2.35"–8.94"). Standard first choice for distribution mains. 227: Medium to large pipe (OD 3.49"–14.85") — the workhorse for 4"–12" mains. 228: Large diameter (OD 14.38"–30.72") — transmission mains and force mains. When in doubt on size: order the next width wider.

Top Seller · Wet Taps

Tapping Sleeves — Styles 622, 664 & 665

Smith-Blair tapping sleeves allow new service connections and branch line installations on pressurized water mains without shutting down the system — the only choice for live main tapping.

A tapping sleeve wraps around a pressurized main and provides a flanged or threaded outlet for installing a tapping valve. End gaskets seal against the main OD while the outlet holds full working pressure during and after the tap — no shutdown required.

622 vs. 664 vs. 665 — Which to Specify

Style 622 is the broadest-range carbon steel sleeve — covers 4.5"–19.03" main OD with NPT or MJ outlets up to 16". Style 664 is a compact carbon steel sleeve optimized for 4.5"–14.09" main OD with a cleaner design. Style 665 is the all-stainless version of 664 for corrosive environments. All three are available with MJ outlets for direct connection to mechanical joint valves.

Main: 4"–36" (622)Outlet: NPT or MJBody: Carbon Steel or SSBolts: Alloy or SSPressure: ≤ 200 psi typical
MJ vs. NPT Outlet

NPT outlet is standard for connections to standard tapping valves with threaded flanges. MJ (Mechanical Joint) outlet connects directly to mechanical joint gate valves for faster, no-thread installation — preferred where MJ valves are stocked. MJ suffix: part number contains "MJ" in outlet position.

Specialty · Flanged Connections

Flanged Coupling Adapters — Styles 912 & 913

Connect plain-end pipe to flanged valves, pumps, and equipment. No welding or threading — mechanical joint seal, AWWA Class D flange face.

FCAs use a mechanical joint gasket against the pipe OD while the flange face provides an AWWA Class D / 150 lb bolt pattern for connection to valves, meters, hydrants, and equipment — no welding or threading required.

Style 912 vs. Style 913

Style 912 accommodates a wider OD tolerance range on each nominal size — useful when the exact pipe OD is not precisely known, or when connecting to older cast iron pipe with variable ODs. Style 913 uses a tighter OD range per size for a more secure gasket seal — preferred when the pipe OD is confirmed and consistent. Both are available in alloy, 304 SS, and 316 SS bolt options.

Restrained FCA Options

Styles 907 (Flange-Lock systems), 911 (DI/steel), 920 (PVC), and 923 (Cam-Lock) are restrained FCAs that prevent pipe pull-out — required when no thrust block is present or system operates at higher pressures. Style 975 restrained dismantling joint provides an adjustable-length flanged connection for valve/pump installation/removal in tight spaces.

Full Circle Repair Clamp — Installation Guide

Proper installation is essential for a leak-free, long-service repair. Follow these steps for all Smith-Blair full circle clamps (Styles 226, 227, 228, 261, 262, 263).

01
Measure Pipe OD
Measure the actual OD with an OD tape or calipers. Measure at two points straddling the defect. Select the clamp part number whose OD range brackets your measured OD. Cast iron, ductile iron, and steel pipe of the same nominal size have different ODs — always measure.
02
Clean the Pipe
Wire brush the pipe surface 2" beyond each clamp edge. Remove loose rust, scale, tuberculation, tar, and raised defects. Gasket must contact a continuous surface to seal. Intact coating is acceptable — bare metal is not required.
Do not attempt to install over a bulging blowout or heavily deformed pipe section — pipe must be round enough to seat the gasket.
03
Position Clamp
Center the clamp over the defect with at least 1.5" coverage on each side of the visible defect edge. If edges are unclear, center conservatively. For multiple defects — a wider clamp is better than repositioning.
04
Install Bolts Hand Tight
Install all bolts hand tight before applying torque. Gasket must be fully seated — not rolled, bunched, or twisted. Clamp halves should show approximately equal gap on both sides.
05
Torque in Sequence
Tighten in opposing pairs — top/bottom, then sides. Bring all bolts to 50% torque before any reaches final. Final torque: ½" bolt = 40–45 ft-lbs · 5/8" = 75–85 ft-lbs · ¾" = 110–125 ft-lbs.
Do not over-torque — excess torque can deform the clamp or cut the gasket edge. Gaps between clamp halves should be equal when properly torqued.
06
Pressure Test
Return slowly to operating pressure. A small weep at the gasket seam often self-seals as the gasket swells. If an active leak persists, depressurize and re-inspect gasket seating. Never re-torque under pressure.
Line Termination

Technical FAQ

Common Questions

What's the difference between Style 226 and Style 227 repair clamps?
Both are low alloy full circle clamps — they differ by OD range. Style 226 covers OD 2.35"–8.94" (2"–6" pipe). Style 227 covers OD 3.49"–14.85" (4"–12" mains). They overlap on 4"–6" — either works, though utilities often standardize on 227 for that range.
When should I specify stainless clamps (261/262) instead of low alloy (226/227)?
Specify stainless when: soil has high chloride or conductivity; installation is coastal, marine, or chemically contaminated; utility specification requires it; or service life exceeds 30+ years. Low alloy is acceptable for standard buried service in normal soils.
How do I select the correct tapping sleeve for my main?
You need: (1) measured main OD; (2) pipe material (steel, cast iron, PVC, DI); (3) outlet size; (4) outlet type (NPT or MJ); (5) body material (carbon steel or SS). A 6" steel IPS and 6" cast iron main have different ODs — always measure, never assume nominal size.
Can Smith-Blair clamps be used on PVC pipe?
Yes — Styles 226, 227, 256, and 261 are all used on PVC. PVC is more prone to crushing under over-torqued bolts, so use the lower torque range. Confirm OD match and check local specs for PVC stiffener requirements.
What does the -000 vs. -001 suffix mean on repair clamps?
-000 = low alloy bolts. -001 = stainless steel bolts on a low alloy body. For all-stainless construction (body and bolts), specify Styles 261/262/263 — not 226/227 with -001 suffix, which still uses a low alloy body.
What's the clamp width I need for a pitting leak?
For a defined pitting leak, 7.5" is typically sufficient if it gives 1.5" coverage past the pit edge on each side. If pitting is scattered or edges are unclear, use 10"–12". Over-specifying width is always safer than risking a secondary leak at the clamp edge.
What is the difference between Style 912 and Style 913 FCAs?
Style 912 has a wider OD tolerance — useful for older cast iron or when OD is uncertain. Style 913 uses a tighter OD range for a more precise gasket seat. If the pipe OD is confirmed, 913 is the more secure choice.
How do I order the correct part for a tapped repair clamp?
Tapped clamps (238, 239, 264) add a threaded outlet for a branch or blowoff at the repair point. Specify pipe OD, clamp width, outlet thread size/type, and bolt material. Contact sales@watermainsupply.com — a quick conversation saves reorder time.
Which Smith-Blair service saddle is right for ductile iron pipe?
For DI pipe specifically, Style 397 is sized for DI ODs and PVC pipe with DI ODs (PVC C-900). For corrosion-resistance, Styles 371/372 are all 304 SS. For combined repair + service tap on a compromised pipe section, Style 331 repair service saddle (epoxy DI body) handles both functions.
What is the Quantum coupling (Styles 421/422) and when do I use it?
Quantum couplings are wide-range couplings that accept multiple pipe ODs in a single SKU. Use them when stocking multiple precise-fit couplings is impractical — emergency response inventories, contractors handling diverse pipe materials, or utilities consolidating SKU counts. Style 422 has a 12" sleeve for higher pull-out resistance.
What restraint products do I need for buried PVC pipe?
For PVC pipe restraint at MJ joints, Style 165 serrated bell/spigot restraint is most common. For restrained sleeve couplings on PVC pipe, Style 471 Pipe-Lock provides both flexible connection and axial restraint. For restrained FCAs on PVC, Style 920 Flange-Lock is the standard.
