Smith-Blair 973 Restrained Dismantling Joint, Steel Body, AWWA Class D Flanges, 3-48 in

The Smith-Blair Style 973 is a fabricated steel restrained dismantling joint for flanged pipe and flanged fittings, 3 to 48 in nominal. A Flange-Lock adapter sleeve with a mechanical joint end receives a flanged spool, and a Cam-Lock restraint grips the spool with ductile iron wedges set by twist-off nuts, so the joint is restrained without tie rods across the flanges.

The spool telescopes 1 in either side of its nominal flange-to-flange length to fit the gap, and the joint takes up to 5° of deflection on 4-12 in. Both ends carry AWWA C207 Class D flanges; it ships with HSLA T-bolts and nuts.

Application: joining and restraining flanged fittings, pumps, meters, valves and other flanged service equipment.

Up to 150 PSI on every size. 3 to 48 in. For a particular installation the allowable pressure also depends on the piping system, service conditions and installation workmanship; Smith-Blair offers a higher-pressure design on request.

Flanged pipe or flanged fittings. Smith-Blair builds the spool in ductile iron pipe sizes 3-48 in and steel (IPS) sizes 3-12 in.

Set the deflection after assembly and before tightening the T-bolts.

• Fit the Cam-Lock restraint and MJ gasket loosely over the flanged spool, compress the joint and set it between the companion flanges.
• Bolt the adapter body to its companion flange, then slide the spool to its flange and bolt it, with the spool at least 3 in past the MJ flange face.
• Lubricate the spool and gasket with a soap-and-water solution that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements, and seat the gasket evenly in its recess, keeping the joint straight.
• Center the Cam-Lock gland, insert the T-bolts and tighten them alternately to the torque range in the instructions with a calibrated torque wrench; set any deflection before tightening.
• Hand-tighten the twist-off nuts until all wedges touch the spool, then turn each nut 1/2 turn in rotation until all twist off; the remaining 5/8 in hex allows later removal and reassembly.
