Grundfos is a Danish pump manufacturer whose CR range is the reference vertical multistage centrifugal pump for clean, thin liquids. The design puts suction and discharge on the same centreline at the same height, so the pump drops into a straight pipe run without an offset, and head is set by the number of stages rather than by a larger casing. The pump head and base are cast iron; the chambers, impellers, shaft and sleeves in contact with the liquid are AISI 304 stainless steel.

Boost in psi equals head in feet multiplied by 0.433. Figures are the published rated duty points; for a duty between two models, or for flows away from the rated point, request the Grundfos curve for the exact model. Confirm against the current Grundfos 60 Hz data booklet before specifying.
How we size a CR, and what to check before it goes in.
Required boost = target pressure at the highest fixture + 0.433 psi per foot of elevation + friction loss − inlet pressure. A four-storey building needing 45 psi at the top fixture, 40 ft above the pump, with 8 psi of friction and 30 psi at the inlet, needs 45 + 17.3 + 8 − 30 = 40.3 psi of boost, which is 93 ft of head. On a closed HVAC loop there is no static lift to overcome, so the calculation is friction loss around the loop only.
For residential and multi-unit, convert fixture units with WSFU and Hunter’s curve (IPC Table 604.3). For light commercial, the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator gives a less conservative and more realistic peak. For HVAC and process duty, take the flow from the coil, chiller or process schedule rather than estimating it. A CR 3 at 15.4 GPM, a CR 5 at 30.4 GPM and a CR 10 at 53.3 GPM cover most small commercial boosting and HVAC circulation duties.
Confirm the connection rating against system pressure: oval flange models are limited to 232 psi and ANSI 250 lb flanged models to 362 psi, and that includes inlet pressure plus pump head. Confirm liquid temperature against the seal — HQQE reaches 248 degrees F, HQQV only 194 degrees F. Maximum ambient is 104 degrees F. Three-phase models need a correctly sized starter or overload; single-phase models still need a correctly rated branch circuit and disconnect.
Multistage pumps are sensitive to available suction head. Confirm NPSH available at the design flow against NPSH required from the curve for the exact model, with margin, particularly on hot water and on any suction lift.

Why this design has been the reference multistage pump for three decades.
Suction and discharge share a centreline at the same height. The pump drops into a straight run with no offset, no elbow and no baseplate, which is why CR retrofits into existing pipework so easily.
More head comes from adding chambers, not from a bigger casing or a faster motor. The footprint barely changes between a 2-stage and a 10-stage pump, so a system can be re-rated by changing the stack.
The seal is replaced as a complete cartridge without dismantling the pump, without setting faces by hand and without special tools. It is the single biggest difference in maintenance time against older multistage designs.
Both seal faces are silicon carbide in every option listed here, not carbon. That is what lets the same seal handle hot water, glycol and mildly abrasive service without premature failure.
Chambers, impellers, shaft and sleeves are AISI 304 with a cast iron head and base. The liquid never touches the cast iron on the pressure side, which is what earns the NSF/ANSI 61 listing.
The same hydraulics are offered in a 232 psi oval flange build and a 362 psi ANSI 250 lb build. You pick the pressure class at order rather than moving to a different pump family.
Standard NEMA C-face frames from 56C to 254TC, single and three phase. Replacement motors are a stock item from any motor supplier rather than a proprietary part.
CR, CRI and CRN share hydraulics and differ only in materials, and CRE adds an integrated drive. Moving to all-stainless or to variable speed keeps the same duty point and the same footprint.
We sell every major line, so we can be straight about fit. If CR is not the right pump for your liquid or your duty, we will say so.

Hydraulics are shared across the ranges, so a CR 5-8 and a CRN 5-8 have the same rated duty point. The choice is materials and control, not performance. CRI, CRN and the E-pump ranges are quoted on request.
CR needs clean, thin, non-aggressive liquid without solids or fibres. For wastewater, solids-bearing or stringy liquid it is the wrong machine and we will quote a submersible or a solids-handling pump instead. For a single-stage duty at low head, a close-coupled end suction pump is cheaper and simpler. For deep well service, a submersible is the right answer. Tell us the liquid and the duty and we will quote the pump that fits, whether or not it is a Grundfos.

60 Hz hydraulics, NEMA C-face motors and the voltage and phase your service actually has. The 50 Hz metric equivalents look identical on paper and will not perform to the same curve.

The questions that come up most often on the phone about CR selection.
It is the nominal duty in cubic metres per hour, not gallons per minute. At 60 Hz the rated flows are 15.4 GPM for CR 3, 30.4 GPM for CR 5 and 53.3 GPM for CR 10. Size from the rated head table on this page, never from the family number.
It is the stage count. More stages produce more head at the same flow without changing the pump footprint, so head rises from 45 ft on a CR 3-2 to 588 ft on a CR 3-25 while the rated flow stays at 15.4 GPM.
The final letter is the rubber. HQQE uses EPDM and is the standard water seal, rated minus 4 to 248 degrees F, suitable for potable water, hot water and glycol but not mineral oils. HQQV uses FKM and is rated minus 4 to 194 degrees F, for mineral oils, fuels and liquids that attack EPDM. Both use silicon carbide faces.
Oval flange takes pipe thread and is rated to 232 psi. ANSI 250 lb bolts to a flanged line and is rated to 362 psi. They are not interchangeable in the field. Companion flanges are not included with ANSI flanged pumps and are ordered separately; oval-flange models include their oval flanges.

Yes. The CR range carries NSF/ANSI 61 certification for drinking water contact. The pump head and base are cast iron; the chambers, impellers, shaft and sleeves are AISI 304 stainless steel.
CR has a cast iron head and base with 304 stainless wetted parts. CRI is all 304 stainless. CRN is 316 stainless for more aggressive liquids. The hydraulics are shared, so a CR 5-8 and a CRN 5-8 have the same rated duty.
Not in the CR range as listed here, which is fixed speed. The CRE range carries an integrated variable frequency drive on the motor. Tell us the duty and we will quote whichever suits the application.
