Franklin Electric IGP-M231-15 grinder used in the simplex package

Grinder Pumps

Grinder pumps cut household sewage into a fine slurry and push it through small-diameter pipe, uphill or over long distances, where a standard sewage ejector can't reach. They are the pump of choice for low-pressure sewer systems, homes below the sewer line and long force mains. This collection covers complete grinder pumps, ready-to-install simplex and duplex packages, and the control panels every grinder needs. Choose 1 HP for shorter, lower-head runs and 2 HP or high-head models for long or uphill mains. Not sure which fits? Run the Sump & Sewage Pump Calculator or send us your elevation and run length for an engineering-led selection. Call 1-888.510.4036 or email sales@watermainsupply.com.

A grinder pump sits in a sealed basin, cuts everything that comes down the drain into a slurry, and pumps it through a 1-1/4 in force main. It is the pump for homes below the sewer line, lake and hillside communities on low-pressure sewer, and any run too long or too high for a gravity line or a standard sewage ejector.

We supply bare grinder pumps for replacements, complete simplex and duplex packages, PowerSewer stations and the control panels and parts that go with them, and we size every one: send us the elevation, the force-main length and the number of homes, and we come back with the pump, the panel and the reasoning. Call 1-888.510.4036 or email sales@watermainsupply.com. All products are genuine, factory-new equipment in original manufacturer packaging, sold and supported by Watermain Supply, an independent industrial supplier.

Will It Work for Me?

The four questions that decide a grinder job, answered from the manufacturers’ data.

Warranty

A.Y. McDonald: 1 year from installation or 2 years from manufacture, whichever comes first. Franklin IGP and IGPH pumps: 2 years from original purchase. Franklin PowerSewer stations: 3 years from original purchase.

Reliability

Hardened cutters ahead of the impeller (A.Y. McDonald 440 stainless; Franklin 414,000 cuts a minute), oil-filled motors with built-in overload protection, and mechanical seals running in oil. Every pump lifts out for service; repair parts are listed.

Fit

1 HP grinders reach about 55 ft of head, 2 HP models 100 to 130 ft, and the dual-stage high-head pumps 200 ft. Most need a control panel; the automatic (A) models carry their own start parts. Discharge is 1-1/4 in on every model.

How a Grinder Pump Works — and When You Need One

A sewage ejector passes solids whole and needs a 2 in or larger discharge. A grinder cuts them first, which changes what the system can do.

Choose a grinder pump when

  • The force main is long, uphill or runs to a pressurized low-pressure sewer.
  • Total head is above what a sewage ejector makes (about 25 to 30 ft for 1/2 HP ejectors).
  • The discharge has to be small pipe: 1-1/4 in or 2 in.
  • Several homes share a low-pressure sewer main.

A sewage ejector is enough when

  • The basement bathroom lifts to a gravity sewer a few feet away.
  • Total head stays under about 25 ft.
  • A 2 in discharge and a 2 in solids pump fit the job.
  • See Sewage Pumps.
Quick rule: if the water has to go up more than about 25 ft, or travel hundreds of feet through small pipe, it is grinder territory. Keep the force main at 2 ft/s or more so the slurry stays moving: about 9 GPM in 1-1/4 in pipe.

Verdict: Franklin wins on head: the IGPH reaches 200 ft and the automatic IGP-A and IGPH-A run without a control panel. A.Y. McDonald wins where only 115V is available (the 1 HP 110911GRP is the only 115V grinder here), on the shorter runs a 1 HP pump covers, and on flow at low head (44 GPM on the 2 HP).

Selection Guide

Typical duties are guidance. The pump is chosen on its curve at your flow and total head.

Sizing a Grinder Station

Two numbers decide it: the flow that keeps the main clean, and the total head at that flow.

1. Flow

Keep at least 2 ft/s in the force main so the slurry stays in suspension: about 9 GPM in 1-1/4 in pipe and 21 GPM in 2 in. A single home rarely needs more than that; shared mains add flow per home connected.

2. Total head

Total dynamic head = the rise from the basin to the highest point of the main + pipe friction + fittings and valves + any pressure the main is held at (on a pressurized low-pressure sewer, the main’s operating pressure in feet).

Worked example: a home 30 ft below the street main, 800 ft of 1-1/4 in PVC, 15 GPM. Velocity is 3.2 ft/s (above the 2 ft/s minimum). Friction is about 3.1 ft per 100 ft, so 25 ft over the run; with about 3 ft for the check valve and fittings, TDH is about 58 ft. The 1 HP A.Y. grinder makes 43 ft at 15 GPM on its published curve: too little. The 2 HP 120212GRP makes 93 ft at 15 GPM: it covers the duty with margin, as do the Franklin 2 HP models.

Run the numbers for your site in the Sump & Sewage Pump Calculator, or send us the elevations and run length and we size the station.

What Makes a Grinder Last

Hardened cutters

The cutter sits on the suction side and reduces solids before they reach the impeller. A.Y. McDonald uses 440 stainless (56-60 Rockwell); Franklin’s cutter makes 414,000 cuts a minute.

Non-clog impellers

A.Y. McDonald uses a cast iron vortex impeller for higher head and non-overloading performance; Franklin a seven-vane, angled-face brass impeller.

Oil-filled motors

Oil cools the motor and lubricates the bearings; built-in overload protection guards against over-current and over-temperature.

Seals running in oil

Single mechanical seals in an oil-filled chamber tolerate dry running and last longer.

Automatic or manual

Automatic models carry their start parts in the pump and run from a float. Manual models keep the start parts in the panel, which is easier to service and allows three-phase.

Lift-out service

Rail systems and quick-disconnect cords let the pump come out of the basin without anyone going in.

Control Panels and Parts

Most grinders need a panel with level floats and a high-water alarm. Match the panel to the pump’s brand, voltage and amps; we confirm the match before we ship.

All parts are genuine, factory-new manufacturer parts. Franklin panels are designed for Franklin IGP grinders; for A.Y. McDonald grinders, send us the model and we specify the panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a grinder pump or a sewage ejector?

A sewage ejector is enough for a short lift to a nearby gravity sewer, under about 25 ft of head with a 2 in discharge. Choose a grinder for long, uphill or small-diameter force mains and for low-pressure sewer systems.

Does a grinder pump need a control panel?

Manual models do: the panel holds the start components, floats and high-water alarm. Franklin’s automatic IGP-A and IGPH-A carry their own start components and run from a float without a panel. The A.Y. McDonald grinders are run from a control panel.

How high can a grinder pump push sewage?

1 HP grinders reach about 55 ft of shut-off head, 2 HP standard grinders 104 to 130 ft, and Franklin’s dual-stage IGPH 200 ft. Choose on the flow at your total head, not the shut-off figure.

What size force main do I need?

Grinders discharge 1-1/4 in, and 1-1/4 in or 2 in mains are common. Keep at least 2 ft/s: about 9 GPM in 1-1/4 in pipe and 21 GPM in 2 in.

Is there a 115V grinder pump?

Yes: the A.Y. McDonald 1 HP 110911GRP and 110911GRPA run on 115V. The 2 HP grinders need 208-230V.

What is the warranty?

A.Y. McDonald grinders: 1 year from installation or 2 years from manufacture, whichever comes first. Franklin IGP and IGPH pumps: 2 years from original purchase; PowerSewer stations: 3 years.

Can I replace an old positive-displacement grinder?

Yes. Franklin’s IGP retrofit kit drops into the existing basin as one assembly; match the black or gray plug to your basin wiring.

Can you size the whole station?

Yes. Send the elevations, force-main length and pipe size, the number of homes and the power available, and we return the pump, panel, basin and fittings with the reasoning. Call 1-888.510.4036.
