Smith-Blair Flanged Coupling Adapters

Smith-Blair flanged coupling adapters connect plain-end pipe directly to flanged valves, meters, pumps, and fittings — no welding, no fabricated spools, no special tooling. Seven styles cover every combination of pipe material, nominal size, and restraint requirement: the FlangeLock 911 and 920 provide integral cam-lock restraint eliminating concrete thrust blocks, while the 912, 913, 914, and 921 serve standard non-restrained applications where thrust blocking is already provided. Pipe materials covered include ductile iron, carbon steel, PVC C-900/C-905, cast iron, copper, HDPE, and asbestos cement in nominal sizes from 2" through 48". All styles feature Smith-Blair's Flexi-Coat® fusion-bonded epoxy finish per AWWA C213, and most are available with NSF 61-certified Buna-N gaskets for potable water service. As an authorized Smith-Blair distributor, Watermain Supply stocks the complete FCA catalog and provides same-day quote response, project submittals, and engineering sizing support from Houston, Texas.

Which Smith-Blair FCA Do You Need?

The seven styles look similar but serve different pipe materials, restraint requirements, and installation constraints. Match your situation below and you’ll know exactly which style to order.

Ductile iron or steel pipe — need restraint?
Integral cam-lock wedge restraint grips the pipe OD — no concrete thrust block needed. Standard specification for DI water main connections to flanged valves and hydrants.
→ Style 911 FlangeLock DI/Steel
PVC pipe — need restraint?
Same cam-lock restraint geometry adapted for C-900 and C-905 PVC OD tolerances. Bite geometry is specific to PVC — do not substitute Style 911 on PVC pipe.
→ Style 920 FlangeLock PVC
Large diameter or combining with your own MJ gland?
Body-only adapter that combines with any standard MJ restraint gland, MJ gasket, and T-bolts. Pipe passes completely through the body for easier positioning on large sizes.
→ Style 923 MJ Coupling Body
DI pipe, 3"–12", thrust block provided?
Cast ductile iron body with OMNI-compatible gasket system. One body per nominal size with color-coded follower flanges by pipe type. Ships complete with flange bolts.
→ Style 912 Cast DI
Steel pipe, 3"–24", thrust block provided?
Fabricated steel body, NSF 61/372 Buna-N gasket, AWWA C219. Covers 5" and 14"–24" not available in the 912. The non-restrained choice for larger steel pipe.
→ Style 913 Fabricated Steel
Connecting to a different-size flange?
One unit replaces a reducer plus a standard FCA. Order by specifying your pipe OD (coupling end) and the flange nominal size (flanged end) — two catalog codes combined.
→ Style 914 Reducing FCA
Wide OD range, tight vault, or field gasket replacement?
Patented top-bolt design. Removable channeled inner gasket — the only FCA where you can replace the gasket without removing the adapter. Works on DI, steel, PVC, copper, HDPE.
→ Style 921 Top Bolt

FlangeLock® · Integral Restraint · No Thrust Block Required

Restrained Flanged Coupling Adapters

Styles 911, 920, and 923 all provide mechanical pipe restraint. The right choice for trenchless installations, valve replacements on live mains, tight excavations, and any location where pouring thrust blocks is impractical or prohibited by project specifications.

Style 911 — FlangeLock Restrained FCA · Ductile Iron and Steel

The 911 is the standard waterworks specification product for connecting ductile iron and steel pipe to flanged valves, hydrants, meters, and fittings with integral restraint. Patents US 7484775, US 7748100, CA 2511782. The Cam-Lock gland contains multiple single-tooth ductile iron wedges — on DI pipe, the wedges are heat-treated for maximum grip. Torque breakaway nuts to 45–60 ft·lbs per wedge; the nut snaps confirming engagement. Reducing style available.

Pipe: Ductile Iron (all sizes) Pipe: Steel (3"–12" only) Sizes: 3"–48" Std Pressure: 150 PSI DI ≤16" option: 300 PSI w/ 300 lb flange DI 18"–48": 250 PSI max Steel 3"–12": 250 PSI max Restrained: Yes — Cam-Lock integral
Pressure Limits by Pipe Material

DI pipe 3"–16": up to 300 PSI with 300 lb flange option (specify at order — not a field modification). DI pipe 18"–48": 250 PSI max regardless of flange class. Steel pipe 3"–12": 250 PSI max. Standard configuration ships with AWWA C207 Class D ANSI 150 lb flat face flange.

⚠ Do Not Use 911 on PVC or Steel Above 12"

The 911 wedge is heat-treated for ductile iron pipe hardness. PVC is too soft — use Style 920. Steel pipe above 12" is outside the 911’s tested engagement range — contact Smith-Blair engineering for large steel pipe applications.

Style 920 — FlangeLock Restrained FCA · PVC Pipe

The 920 is the PVC-specific restrained FCA with Cam-Lock joint restraint. It is not interchangeable with the 911 — the OD ranges and bite geometry are calibrated for C-900 and C-905 PVC pipe, which has different wall thickness and surface hardness than ductile iron. Available 3" through 36". Working pressure: 175 PSI for 3"–12"; 150 PSI for 14"–30".

For 3"–12" sizes, Smith-Blair offers dual-OD-range catalog numbers (suffix -100) that accommodate both PVC and DI ODs in one adapter — useful when pipe type is not confirmed at time of order. Single-OD numbers (suffix -000) are available when the pipe material is known.

Style 923 — Flange-Lock® MJ Coupling Body Only

The 923 is a flanged adapter body only — it ships without the restraint gland, gasket, or T-bolts. You combine it with a standard mechanical joint restraint gland, MJ gaskets, and T-bolts of your specification. The key advantage: pipe can pass completely through the body, making positioning and alignment far easier on large-diameter installations. This pass-through feature is not available with raised-face flanges. Use the Multi-Seal Gasket for 4"–12" nominal sizes for additional OD flexibility.

4
T-Bolts
High-strength low-alloy per AWWA C111. Optional 304 stainless steel fluoropolymer-coated for corrosive or submerged environments.
Non-Restrained · Thrust Block or Tie-Rods Required

Standard Flanged Coupling Adapters

Styles 912 and 913 do not include integral restraint. Use where concrete thrust blocking, tie-rod systems, or a fully restrained pipeline provides the reaction. Lowest installed cost per connection — appropriate for the majority of conventional in-ground valve, meter, and pump connections.

Style 912 — Cast Ductile Iron FCA (OMNI Compatible Gasket)

The 912 is the only cast ductile iron body in the Smith-Blair FCA lineup — all other styles are fabricated steel. This makes the 912 the heaviest-duty body in the 3"–12" range. Ships complete including flange bolts, meets AWWA C219, and uses the OMNI-compatible gasket system. One body per nominal size: add the correct color-coded follower flange (blue/red/gray) and the appropriate OMNI gasket for your pipe OD range. Optional anchor studs — installed at the factory only on customer request — add partial restraint capability.

Pipe: Ductile Iron Pipe: Cast Iron Pipe: Steel Pipe: PVC Pipe: Asbestos Cement Sizes: 3"–12" Working: 250 PSI Restrained: No (anchor studs optional) Ships: Complete with flange bolts
Color-Coded Follower Flange System

Blue follower = Ductile Iron OD  ·  Red follower = Iron Pipe Size (IPS) OD  ·  Gray follower = Asbestos Cement OD. One 912 body handles every pipe type for that nominal size — only the follower and gasket change. This eliminates the guesswork of selecting which body to order and simplifies stocking.

Style 913 — Fabricated Steel FCA

The 913 is a fabricated carbon steel FCA covering 3" through 24" — the broadest nominal size range of any single non-restrained Smith-Blair FCA style, and the only one covering 5", 14", 16", 18", 20", and 24". NSF 61/372 certified. The follower is ductile iron for 3"–12"; heavy rolled steel AISI C1020 for 14" and above. Optional anchor studs provide partial restraint when pipe has been pre-drilled — factory-installed only, and the pipe must be field-drilled to accept them.

Pipe: Steel Pipe: Ductile Iron Pipe: Cast Iron Pipe: PVC Pipe: Asbestos Cement Sizes: 3"–24" (larger on request) Working: 150 PSI Restrained: No (anchor studs optional) Certifications: NSF 61 & 372
⚠ Anchor Studs Require Pre-Drilled Pipe

Anchor studs on Style 913 must be ordered factory-installed. The pipe must be pre-drilled in the field to accept the studs before installation. This is partial restraint only — for full certified pull-out resistance, specify Style 911 (DI/steel) or 920 (PVC).

Style 914 — Reducing FCA & Style 921 — Top Bolt

Style 914 — Reducing Flanged Coupling Adapter

The 914 connects a plain-end pipe of one size to a flanged fitting of a different nominal size in a single unit — eliminating a pipe reducer plus a separate FCA. Common examples: 12" main to a 10" butterfly valve; 16" distribution main to a 12" pump suction flange; 8" transmission main to a 6" meter. Reductions of more than three nominal pipe sizes require special pricing.

Ordering is two-part: Coupling End Y (pipe OD range) + Flange End X (flange nominal size). Combine the two catalog codes and append -003 (standard Flexi-Coat finish, alloy bolts, NSF Buna-N gasket). Bolts, nuts, and gasket for the flange end are not supplied — provide separately to match the mating valve or fitting.

How to Build a 914 Catalog Number

Example: Connect 12" steel pipe (actual OD 12.63"–12.84") to an 8" flanged valve.
Step 1 — Coupling end OD range 12.63–12.84 → code 914-1275 (56 lbs)
Step 2 — 8" flanged end → code 08 (26 lbs)
Step 3 — Combine and add finish suffix

Style 921 — Top Bolt® Flanged Coupling Adapter

The 921 is Smith-Blair’s most installation-friendly standard FCA. Patents 8,528,945 / 8,776,351 / 8,789,832. Three features set it apart from every other style in this catalog: a removable inner gasket (the only FCA where you can pull and replace the gasket without removing the adapter from the pipe), wide OD range per unit (one catalog number covers two sub-ranges spanning multiple pipe types), and a top-bolt design that allows full installation without 360° access — critical in valve vaults and confined trenches. Also the broadest pipe material compatibility of any Smith-Blair FCA: DI, steel, PVC, copper, asbestos cement, and HDPE (with pipe stiffeners). Available in metric sizes (prefix 421-) 50mm through 300mm.

Technical FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need a restrained FCA or can I use a standard one?
If your design includes a concrete thrust block, tie-rod system, or fully restrained pipeline capable of handling calculated thrust at operating pressure, a standard non-restrained FCA (912, 913, or 921) is appropriate and lowest cost. If thrust blocking is impractical, prohibited by specification, or the connection is in a trenchless bore or tight vault, use a restrained FCA — Style 911 for DI/steel, Style 920 for PVC. When in doubt, calculate the thrust force at your design pressure and compare blocking cost vs. restrained adapter cost.
Can I use Style 911 on PVC pipe?
No. The 911 wedge is heat-treated for ductile iron pipe hardness. PVC is significantly softer — the 911 wedge geometry will not grip PVC correctly and may cut into or crush the pipe wall. For PVC, specify Style 920, which is engineered with PVC-appropriate bite geometry and OD ranges matched to C-900 and C-905 PVC. This is the single most common substitution error on Smith-Blair FCA orders.
What is a breakaway nut and how do I know the Cam-Lock has engaged?
A breakaway nut is a torque-indicating fastener. When you reach the specified torque — 45–60 ft·lbs on Style 911, 40–60 ft·lbs on Style 920 — the nut shears cleanly at a scored section. The snap and exposed stub confirm the wedge has reached full engagement depth in the pipe OD. Do not attempt to re-torque after breakaway — engagement is set. If a nut breaks before reaching minimum torque, the wedge may not be properly seated; contact Smith-Blair engineering before pressurizing the line.
What does the OMNI gasket system on Style 912 mean for ordering?
The OMNI system means the 912 body is universal for the nominal size — you select the correct follower flange by pipe type (blue = DI OD, red = IPS OD, gray = AC OD) and the OMNI coupling gasket by actual pipe OD range. If your utility already stocks OMNI coupling gaskets, those same gaskets work in the 912 without maintaining a separate FCA gasket inventory. One 912 body handles ductile iron, cast iron, IPS steel, and asbestos cement — only the follower and gasket swap out.
How do I build a Style 914 reducing FCA catalog number?
You need two pieces of information: (1) actual measured pipe OD at the coupling end, and (2) nominal flange size at the flanged end. Locate your pipe OD in the “Coupling End Y” table to get the first catalog code. Locate your flange nominal size in the “Flange End X” table for the second code. Combine both and append -003 for standard Flexi-Coat finish, alloy bolts, and NSF Buna-N gasket. Example: 12" steel pipe to 8" valve = 914-127508-003. Note: bolts, nuts, and gasket for the flanged end are not supplied — provide those separately to match the mating valve or fitting.
When should I specify 300 lb flange drilling instead of standard 150 lb?
Standard Smith-Blair FCAs ship with AWWA C207 Class D ANSI 150 lb drilling. Specify 300 lb when your system pressure exceeds 150 PSI and the connected valve or fitting has 300 lb drilling. On Style 911, the 300 lb option is available for ductile iron pipe through 16" only, rated to 300 PSI. This must be specified at time of order — flange drilling cannot be modified in the field. For all other styles and sizes beyond 16", 150 lb is the only available option; contact Smith-Blair engineering for exceptions.
What is Flexi-Coat and is it safe for potable water?
Flexi-Coat® is Smith-Blair’s proprietary fusion-bonded epoxy finish applied per AWWA C213 at 12–15 mils thickness. It is factory-applied at high temperature — not field paint. The Nitrile (Buna-N) gaskets on Styles 912, 913, 914, and 921 are independently certified to NSF/ANSI 61 for potable water contact. For NSF 61 compliance documentation on the coating itself, or for full project submittals, contact sales@watermainsupply.com and we will coordinate with Smith-Blair’s technical team.
What is the pass-through feature on Style 923?
The Style 923 body bore is large enough for the pipe to pass completely through it before assembly. This means you slide the body down the pipe to a convenient position, drop the MJ restraint gland and gasket into place, then advance the body back to the joint — no threading from the pipe end. On large-diameter pipe where weight and alignment are difficult to manage, this dramatically simplifies installation. Note: the pass-through feature is not available when raised-face flanges are specified.
What makes the Style 921 Top Bolt different from the 912 or 913?
Three things. First, the removable inner gasket — the 921 is the only Smith-Blair FCA where you can pull and replace the channeled inner gasket without removing the adapter from the pipe. Second, the top-bolt design means all bolts are accessible from one side, so you don’t need 360° access around the adapter during installation — critical in valve vaults and tight trenches. Third, the 921 covers the broadest range of pipe materials: DI, steel, PVC, copper, asbestos cement, and HDPE with pipe stiffeners. The tradeoff: sizes only go up to 12", and it is non-restrained.
Can I get project submittals, shop drawings, or material certifications?
Yes. As an authorized Smith-Blair distributor, Watermain Supply coordinates directly with Smith-Blair’s technical team for project submittals, shop drawings, material mill certifications, NSF 61 compliance documentation, and engineer-of-record submittals.
