Description

The Smith-Blair Style 912 OMNI flanged coupling adapter (FCA) is a cast ductile iron plain end x flange adapter that joins plain-end pipe to flanged valves, fittings and meters, 3 to 12 in nominal and 2.85 to 14.20 in pipe OD. The flange end bolts to an ANSI 125 or 150 lb companion flange; on the coupling end, a color-coded follower and an OMNI-compatible Nitrile gasket seal on steel (IPS), ductile iron, cast iron, asbestos cement or PVC pipe, with one body per nominal size.

Most installs are stab fit, and the FCA gives a quick way to remove and reinstall a flanged fitting already in line. Choose the nominal size and pipe OD first, then the hardware (electro-galvanized, 304 or 316 stainless studs, or ductile iron cross bolts and T-bolts), then the standard adapter or, where one is offered for that OD, the anchor-stud build that holds the plain pipe end.

Application: joining plain-end pipe to flanged valves, meters and fittings, and replacing cracked pipe or spooled flanges, 3 to 12 in.

Key Features

  • Working pressure up to 250 PSI
  • Flange end matches ANSI 125 and 150 lb bolt patterns; shipped complete with flange bolts
  • One body per nominal size; followers color coded blue for ductile iron OD, red for IPS and gray for AC
  • Coupling end relieves stress, absorbs vibration and accepts up to 2° deflection
  • Certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372; meets applicable portions of AWWA C219
What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the ductile iron adapter body, color-coded follower flange, Nitrile coupling gasket and flange O-ring, with the studs or cross bolts and T-bolts and nuts of the chosen build, flange bolts included.

Anchor studs, a separate build. Smith-Blair ships FCAs without anchor studs unless ordered: choose the anchor-stud part number (-100, -200 or -300) in the third option, offered on the OD ranges in the table below. Stainless anchor studs are quoted on request.

Restraint plates and tie rods, ask first. Smith-Blair 907 restraint plates with 101 tie rods restrain flanged connections; Smith-Blair asks that their use with a 912 be checked first, so email us the application.

12-Month Smith-Blair Warranty

Smith-Blair warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment by Smith-Blair. Dated proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale, is required to establish eligibility. Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.

Working Pressure

Up to 250 PSI on every size, 3 to 12 in. For a particular installation the allowable pressure also depends on pipe type and condition, service conditions and installation workmanship. The PSI figures in the anchor stud table rate the thrust the studs hold, not the FCA itself.

Pipe Applications

Carbon steel, stainless steel, ductile iron, cast iron, asbestos cement and PVC pipe. Pipe stiffeners are required on thin-wall PVC and on polyethylene (PE) pipe.

Optional Anchor Studs
Size Pipe OD range (in) Studs Stud thrust rating
3 in 3.44-3.62, 3.80-3.96, 3.97-4.14 2 175 PSI
4 in 4.22-4.50, 4.46-4.86, 4.80-5.10 2 175 PSI
6 in 6.28-6.63 / 6.56-6.96, 6.90-7.20 2 125 / 175 PSI
8 in 8.40-8.63, 8.54-9.11 / 9.05-9.40 2 100 / 175 PSI
10 in 10.50-10.75 / 11.10-11.60 4 100 / 120 PSI
12 in 12.50-12.75, 13.20-13.50 6 100 PSI

The rating is the thrust the studs hold, not the FCA. Other OD ranges take no anchor studs. Anchor-stud builds end -100 (3-8 in), -200 (10 in) and -300 (12 in).

Installation Notes
  • Clean about 12 in of the pipe end, check the pipe OD against the adapter range, and lubricate the pipe and gaskets with a soap-and-water solution that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements.
  • Slide the follower flange, gasket and adapter body onto the plain end in that order, then bolt the body to the companion flange, alternating bolt holes; leave a 1/2 to 1 in gap between the pipe end and the companion flange.
  • Engage at least 3 in of pipe; deflection is limited to 2° at that engagement.
  • Torque the companion-flange nuts to the job specification, then the follower nuts to the torque in the instructions with a calibrated torque wrench; re-torque after the line is pressurized.
  • Anchor-stud builds: the pipe must sit at least 1 in past the anchor-stud boss. Drill through the pipe wall using a pipe nipple in the boss as a guide, and set each stud with pipe thread compound, not tape; the pipe cannot be moved afterward.
  • Anchor the pipe: the FCA seals around it but does not restrain it, and Smith-Blair requires anchor studs or other proper anchoring to restrain pipe movement and prevent pull-out.
