Pumptec Submersible Pump Protection Devices

Protect your well pump investment with Franklin Electric Pumptec — the industry standard in solid-state pump motor protection. Three models to match every installation, from basic residential wells to demanding 5 HP systems.

Why Your Submersible Pump Needs Pumptec Protection

A submersible well pump operates hundreds of feet underground, out of sight and out of reach. When something goes wrong — a low-yield well runs dry, voltage drops during a summer brownout, sand clogs the intake screen, or a check valve fails and causes rapid cycling — the damage happens silently. By the time you notice (no water at the tap, a tripped breaker, or a sky-high electric bill), the motor windings are already burned. Pulling a submersible pump for replacement typically costs $1,500 to $3,000+ in labor alone, on top of the equipment cost.

Pumptec by Franklin Electric is a microprocessor-based protection device that continuously monitors motor load and power line conditions in real time. When it detects an abnormal condition — whether it's an underload from a dry well, an overload from a sand-locked impeller, or a voltage spike from a lightning strike — it shuts the motor down before damage occurs, waits for conditions to normalize, and automatically restarts the pump. It's the cheapest insurance you can put on a well system, and it pays for itself the first time it saves your motor from a single dry-run event.

Baker Water Systems offers three Pumptec models through their catalog, each designed by Franklin Electric for specific installation types and motor configurations. Watermain Supply carries all three as an authorized dealer.

Fault Conditions Pumptec Protects Against

Every Pumptec model monitors for the same core set of damaging conditions that destroy submersible pump motors. Here's what each threat actually does to your system and why protection matters:

Low Yield / Dry Well

When water level drops below the pump intake, the motor loses its cooling medium and overheats rapidly. This is the #1 killer of submersible motors in residential wells.

Over/Under Voltage

Voltage outside ±10% of rated causes excessive current draw, winding overheating, and premature insulation breakdown. Common during storms and peak summer demand.

Power Surges

Lightning strikes and utility switching events send destructive voltage spikes through the electrical system directly to the motor windings underground.

Air / Gas Lock

Trapped air prevents water from reaching the impellers, causing the motor to spin freely without the hydraulic load it needs for proper cooling.

Rapid Cycling

A waterlogged pressure tank or failed check valve causes the pump to start and stop excessively, generating heat buildup that exceeds the motor's thermal capacity.

Sand / Mud Clogging

Abrasive particles jam the pump stages, creating an overload condition that increases current draw and generates excessive heat in the motor.

Broken Shaft / Coupling

A mechanical failure causes a sudden drop in motor load. Without protection, the motor free-spins at excessive RPM, destroying bearings and seals.

Worn Pump Parts

Gradually worn impellers and diffusers reduce hydraulic load, causing the motor to draw abnormal current patterns that accelerate further damage.

Clogged Well Screen

Mineral buildup or sediment restricts water flow to the pump, reducing cooling and creating cavitation that erodes internal pump components.

QD Pumptec — Plug-and-Play Protection for Small Wells

The QD Pumptec is designed exclusively for Franklin Electric QD Relay Control Boxes and covers three-wire single-phase motors from 1/3 to 1 HP. Its defining advantage is zero-tool installation — the module plugs directly into the QD control box with no additional wiring required. Two adjustment knobs let you fine-tune sensitivity and timeout settings, and you can choose between factory-calibrated underload detection or custom calibration matched to your specific system conditions.

When a dry well or other fault is detected, the QD Pumptec shuts down the motor and waits for a user-selectable restart period between 2 and 240 minutes, giving the well time to recover before the pump restarts automatically. Over and under voltage conditions trigger a shorter two-minute shutoff with automatic restart. Run and fault indicator lights on the unit provide at-a-glance system status for troubleshooting.

Important compatibility note: The QD Pumptec is NOT compatible with two-wire Baker/AY motors. It is designed exclusively for Franklin QD three-wire control box systems. If you have a two-wire motor, you need the Pumptec with Remote Reading or the Pumptec Plus instead.

Pumptec with Remote Reading — Monitor Your Well from Inside

The Pumptec with Remote Reading adds a feature that the other two models lack: a remote indicator light that can be mounted inside the home, garage, or utility room so the homeowner can see at a glance whether the pump is running normally or in a fault condition without walking out to the wellhead or pressure tank. This is particularly valuable for seasonal properties, rental homes, or installations where the well equipment is located far from the house.

This model supports both two-wire and three-wire single-phase motors from 1/3 to 1-1/2 HP and operates on both 115V and 230V — making it the most versatile of the three models for smaller residential installations. It provides the same core protection against low yield wells, voltage issues, air lock, broken shafts, clogged screens, and worn parts.

Pumptec Plus — Maximum Protection for Motors Up to 5 HP

The Pumptec Plus is the flagship of the Pumptec family and the model we sell the most at Watermain Supply — for good reason. It's the only model in the lineup that covers the full spectrum of fault conditions including over-voltage, overload, rapid cycling, waterlogged tank detection, and faulty check valve diagnosis. It handles motors from 1/2 to 5 HP, which covers the vast majority of residential and light commercial submersible well pump installations.

The standout feature is Franklin's Snap Shot™ push-button calibration system. Rather than guessing at sensitivity settings, you press a button during normal pump operation and the Pumptec Plus records the exact electrical signature of your specific motor under normal load. From that point forward, any deviation from that baseline triggers protection. This makes it both simpler to install and more accurate at detecting problems than units that rely on generic factory calibration. The continuous calibration memory means it adjusts to gradual changes in your system over time without losing its protective baseline.

The built-in 30-amp heavy-duty contactor is another major advantage — the Pumptec Plus handles the full motor switching load internally, so it doesn't depend on the control box contactor for protection switching. This makes it compatible with virtually every single-phase motor type on the market: PSC, CSCR, CSIR, and split-phase configurations.

Cost of Pumptec vs. Cost of Pump Replacement

The math on pump protection isn't complicated. Here's what you're comparing:

Scenario Typical Cost
Pumptec Plus (one-time purchase) ~$1,573
QD Pumptec (one-time purchase) ~$582
Pulling & reinstalling a submersible pump (labor only) $1,500 – $3,000+
Replacement motor (1–2 HP, parts only) $1,000 – $1,700
Total pump replacement (motor + pump end + labor) $2,500 – $5,000+
Savings from ONE prevented failure $1,000 – $3,400+

A Pumptec device typically lasts the life of the pump system (10–15+ years). Over that period, most wells will experience at least one event — a drought-induced low water level, a summer voltage brownout, a lightning storm — that would damage an unprotected motor. The Pumptec pays for itself the first time it activates.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pumptec

Can I use Pumptec with a two-wire submersible motor?

Yes — but not the QD Pumptec. The QD model is designed exclusively for Franklin three-wire QD control boxes. For two-wire motors, choose either the Pumptec with Remote Reading (up to 1½ HP) or the Pumptec Plus (up to 5 HP). Baker's catalog specifically notes that the QD Pumptec is "NOT COMPATIBLE WITH TWO-WIRE AY MOTORS."

Does Pumptec work with non-Franklin motors like Baker submersible motors?

The Pumptec Plus and Pumptec with Remote Reading work with all single-phase submersible motors regardless of brand — they monitor electrical load patterns that are universal to single-phase motors. The QD Pumptec, however, only works with Franklin QD control boxes due to its plug-in connector design.

What happens when Pumptec detects a fault?

Pumptec immediately shuts power to the motor and illuminates the fault indicator light. After the user-adjustable rest period (ranging from 1 to 240 minutes depending on model), it automatically restarts the pump. If the fault condition persists, it shuts down again and repeats the cycle. For voltage faults, most models restart after a shorter two-minute delay. You can also manually reset any Pumptec by cycling power off for 5 seconds.

Can I use Pumptec on a jet pump?

No. Franklin Electric specifically states that Pumptec is not designed for use with jet pumps or permanent split capacitor (PSC) surface motors. It is designed exclusively for submersible pump motors. Do not use Pumptec with a pump system using a Dole flow control valve.

Will Pumptec work in my low-yield well where water cascades down onto the pump?

Franklin Electric advises that Pumptec is "not recommended for low yielding wells where the water cascades down onto the pump." In these conditions, the motor load pattern may not change predictably enough for the device to detect a fault. Consult with a well professional about alternative protection strategies for extreme low-yield applications.

Where is Pumptec installed?

All Pumptec models are installed above ground — either plugged into the control box (QD model) or wired in-line between the power supply and the motor leads (Remote Reading and Plus models). The Pumptec Plus is rated for outdoor use and can be mounted directly at the wellhead or pressure tank location.

What's the difference between Snap Shot™ calibration and knob calibration?

Knob calibration (QD model) uses manual adjustment dials to set sensitivity — you're estimating the right threshold. Snap Shot™ calibration (Pumptec Plus) records the actual electrical signature of your specific motor under normal operating conditions at the push of a button, then uses that precise baseline for fault detection. Snap Shot™ is more accurate and eliminates guesswork, which is why the Pumptec Plus has significantly fewer false trips.
