Baker Submersible Pump Starter Kits & AutoDRIVE Variable Frequency Drives

Three-phase motor starting made simple with pre-assembled IEC starter kits, or upgrade to constant-pressure well performance with Baker's American-made AutoDRIVE VFD system. From 1/2 HP residential to 75 HP commercial — we stock the full lineup.

Baker IEC Starter Kits for Three-Phase Submersible Motors

Every Baker three-phase submersible motor requires a starter kit — it's the above-ground switching assembly that safely energizes and protects the motor. Baker's IEC starter kits ship fully assembled with a NEMA 1 enclosure, correctly sized contactor, and properly rated overload relay, all pre-wired with the correct voltage coil for your electrical supply. This eliminates the guesswork and code risk of sourcing individual components from different manufacturers, and it means your starter is factory-matched to Baker motor specifications from day one.

Starter kits are available in three voltage configurations — 230V, 460V, and 575V — covering motors from 1/2 HP through 75 HP. The 4-inch motor kits handle residential and light commercial applications from 1/2 to 10 HP, while the 6-inch through 10-inch kits extend the range to 75 HP for municipal water supply, agricultural irrigation, and industrial dewatering systems. Each kit's overload is calibrated to the specific motor amperage it's designed to protect, so proper HP and voltage matching is critical.

4-Inch Submersible Motor Starter Kits

These kits cover Baker's complete 4-inch three-phase motor range. The 230V kits are most common in residential and light commercial applications, while 460V and 575V kits serve commercial and industrial installations with higher voltage service.

6-Inch Through 10-Inch Motor Starter Kits (Commercial & Municipal)

For larger submersible motors used in municipal water supply, commercial irrigation, and industrial applications, Baker offers starter kits covering 5 HP through 75 HP. These kits use heavier-duty contactors and overloads sized for the significantly higher current draw of large three-phase motors. The 460V kits are the most common in this range since most commercial three-phase service runs at 460V.

What's Included in Every Baker Starter Kit

Each Baker IEC starter kit ships as a complete, ready-to-install assembly. There are no loose parts to wire together and no separate components to source. Here's exactly what you get:

NEMA 1 Enclosure

Indoor-rated steel enclosure with knockouts for conduit entry. Provides dust and light splash protection for the contactor and overload components inside.

Correctly Sized Contactor

IEC-rated contactor matched to your motor's full-load amperage. The coil voltage (230V, 460V, or 575V) matches your power supply — this is what physically switches the motor on and off.

Calibrated Overload Relay

Thermal overload pre-set to your motor's HP rating. Trips to disconnect the motor if current draw exceeds safe limits, preventing winding damage from mechanical overload or locked rotor conditions.

Factory Pre-Assembly

All three components are mounted and wired inside the enclosure at the factory. Field installation requires only connecting incoming power and outgoing motor leads.

Baker AutoDRIVE Variable Frequency Drive

Constant pressure well water — no more fluctuating pressure between faucets

What AutoDRIVE Does & Why It Matters

A standard well pump system has one speed: full on. When the pressure switch calls for water, the pump runs at 100% until the pressure tank is full, then shuts off. This creates the familiar pressure fluctuation everyone with a well system knows — strong pressure when the pump kicks on, weakening pressure as the tank empties, a brief dip as the pump restarts. It's especially noticeable when someone flushes a toilet while you're in the shower.

Baker's AutoDRIVE VFD eliminates this entirely. Instead of running the pump at full speed or not at all, the AutoDRIVE continuously adjusts motor speed to match real-time water demand. Open one faucet, and the pump runs at 30%. Turn on the irrigation system, and it ramps to 80%. The result is rock-steady, constant pressure at every fixture — just like city water. It also dramatically reduces the size of pressure tank required (since the VFD handles demand dynamically), cuts energy consumption by not running the pump harder than necessary, and reduces mechanical wear from constant start/stop cycling.

AutoDRIVE is American-made, built into a rugged NEMA 3R powder-coated steel enclosure rated for outdoor installation, and can be set up in five steps or less using the large backlit graphic display that's visible even in direct sunlight. It comes in two configurations: single-phase output for residential 2-wire and 3-wire motors up to 2 HP, and three-phase output for 3-wire motors from 2 to 5 HP.

AutoDRIVE Key Features

Constant Pressure Output

Motor speed adjusts in real time to maintain set pressure regardless of demand. No more pressure drops when multiple fixtures run simultaneously.

5-Step Setup

Large backlit graphic display walks you through configuration. Visible in direct sunlight for wellhead programming. No laptop or proprietary software needed.

Reduced Tank Size

Dynamic speed control means you can use a much smaller pressure tank than a conventional system requires — often dropping from a 50-gallon tank to a small captive-air buffer.

NEMA 3R Outdoor Enclosure

Powder-coated steel housing with protective insect guards and pre-cut conduit openings. Rated for outdoor installation in rain, snow, and temperature extremes.

Pressure Switch or Transducer

SD1 models available with either pressure switch (simpler, lower cost) or pressure transducer (more precise, tighter pressure regulation) control.

Single Phase In → Three Phase Out

SD3 models convert single-phase 230V utility power to three-phase output, letting you run a more efficient three-phase motor on standard residential service.

SD1 Control Method: Pressure Switch vs. Transducer

The SD1 single-phase AutoDRIVE comes in two variants that differ only in how they sense system pressure. This choice matters more than most people realize.

Feature SD1-2HP2PS (Pressure Switch) SD1-2HP2 (Transducer)
Price $1,103 $1,316
How it works Mechanical contacts open/close at set pressure points Electronic sensor sends continuous 4-20mA signal
Pressure accuracy ± 2-3 PSI typical ± 0.5 PSI typical
Best for Basic residential wells, budget-conscious installations Homes wanting tightest possible pressure regulation
Maintenance Switch contacts wear over time, may need replacement No moving parts, longer service life
Troubleshooting Simpler — standard pressure switch diagnostics Requires multimeter to verify 4-20mA signal

Our recommendation: if you're investing in a VFD system to get constant pressure, spend the extra $213 for the transducer model. The whole point of the AutoDRIVE is tight pressure control, and the transducer gives you meaningfully tighter regulation than a mechanical switch can deliver.

AutoDRIVE Replacement Parts

One of the advantages of the AutoDRIVE over competing VFDs is full parts availability. If a component fails, you don't replace the entire drive — you swap the specific board or part. Baker stocks individual components for field repair:

Starter Kit vs. AutoDRIVE: Which Do You Need?

These two products serve completely different purposes, but customers confuse them constantly. Here's the decision framework:

Criteria Starter Kit AutoDRIVE VFD
Purpose Start/stop and overload protection for three-phase motors Variable speed motor control for constant pressure
Motor Type Three-phase only Single-phase (SD1) or three-phase (SD3)
HP Range 1/2 – 75 HP 1/3 – 5 HP
Pressure Behavior Cycles between cut-in and cut-out (traditional) Maintains constant set pressure
Tank Requirement Full-size pressure tank required Small buffer tank only
Energy Efficiency Motor runs at full speed when on Motor speed matches demand (up to 30% energy savings)
Price Range $607 – $1,989 $1,103 – $2,921
Installation Connect power in, motor leads out Connect power, transducer/switch, motor leads
Best Application Standard well systems, commercial/municipal, irrigation Residential wells wanting city-water-like pressure

The simple rule: if your motor is three-phase and you just need it to start and stop with overload protection, you need a starter kit. If you want constant, steady water pressure from your well system (and your motor is 5 HP or under), you want the AutoDRIVE. They are not interchangeable — the AutoDRIVE replaces both the starter/control box AND the pressure switch in your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a starter kit if I buy a Baker three-phase pump assembly?

It depends on how you order. Baker three-phase submersible pumps ordered with the standard suffix (no "LS" at the end) include the starter kit in the box. If the model number ends in "LS" (Less Starter), the starter kit is NOT included and must be ordered separately. Always check your model number suffix before ordering a starter kit to avoid purchasing a duplicate.

Can I use the AutoDRIVE with a non-Baker motor?

Yes — the AutoDRIVE is a standard VFD that works with any submersible motor within its HP and voltage ratings. However, it was designed and optimized for Baker motor electrical characteristics, so you'll get the best performance and protection with a matched Baker motor. If using a non-Baker motor, verify the motor's full-load amperage falls within the AutoDRIVE's rated output current.

What's the difference between a starter kit and a control box?

A control box is for single-phase, three-wire motors — it contains starting capacitors, run capacitors, and a relay or contactor to manage the motor's electrical starting sequence. A starter kit is for three-phase motors — it contains a contactor and overload relay only, because three-phase motors don't need capacitors to start. If you have a single-phase motor, you need a control box. If you have a three-phase motor, you need a starter kit (or an AutoDRIVE).

Can the AutoDRIVE SD3 really run a three-phase motor on single-phase power?

Yes. This is one of the AutoDRIVE SD3's most valuable features. It takes 230V single-phase input from your utility panel and converts it to 230V three-phase output for the motor. This means you can install a more efficient three-phase submersible motor even if your home only has single-phase electrical service — which is the case for most residential properties.

How do I select the right voltage for my starter kit?

Match the starter kit coil voltage to your electrical supply, NOT to the motor voltage. Most residential three-phase service is 230V. Most commercial service is 460V. Canadian and some industrial installations run 575V. The motor nameplate will show which voltage the motor is wound for — that must match too. If your supply is 460V, order a 460V coil starter kit for a 460V motor.

Is the AutoDRIVE compatible with Baker's Pumptec pump protection?

The AutoDRIVE has its own built-in motor protection features (overload, over/under voltage), so Pumptec is typically not needed when using an AutoDRIVE. However, if you're using the SD1 with a pressure switch and want additional dry-run protection, a Pumptec can be wired upstream. Consult Baker technical support for specific wiring configurations.

Can I repair an AutoDRIVE in the field?

Yes — Baker stocks all individual replacement components including inverter boards, control boards, keypads, transducers, pressure switches, fan kits, and enclosure covers. A qualified electrician can swap a failed inverter board in under 30 minutes, versus replacing the entire $1,100–$2,900 drive unit. This is a significant cost advantage over competing VFDs that require full-unit replacement.

Need Help Matching a Starter Kit or AutoDRIVE to Your Motor?

Give us your motor's HP, voltage, phase, and wire configuration, and we'll confirm the exact part number you need. Wrong sizing is the most common ordering mistake — a 5-minute call prevents a costly return and re-order.
