Dresser Style 62 Reducing & Transition Coupling

For Connecting Different Pipe Sizes and Types — Steel, Cast Iron & Ductile Iron

Overview

The Dresser Style 62 Reducing and Transition Coupling is a purpose-built mechanical coupling engineered for three distinct field conditions: joining size-on-size cast iron to steel pipe of the same nominal diameter, making actual reductions in pipe size, and changing pipe class within a distribution system. Where standard couplings cannot span the OD difference between connected pipes, the Style 62 fills the gap without requiring flanges, threaded fittings, or welded reducers.

The Style 62 is available in two configurations. Type I is for modest OD differences — such as connecting standard cast or ductile iron pipe to steel pipe of the same nominal size — and uses standard Style 38 parts with the middle ring swaged on one end to accommodate the size transition. Type II handles larger and special reductions outside the standard Type I range; it is custom-built from Style 38 parts with anchor rings welded to the middle ring and ships with two sets of bolts for independent follower tightening at each end. An insulating variant (Style 39-62) is also available for applications requiring cathodic protection between dissimilar metals.

Key Features

  • Two-Type Configuration: Type I covers standard size-on-size cast iron to steel transitions. Type II handles larger custom reductions — fabricated to order for your exact OD combination.
  • Standard Style 38 Components: Uses the proven Style 38 coupling architecture — same followers, gaskets, and bolts — ensuring reliable sealing performance in a transition application.
  • Swaged Middle Ring (Type I): One end of the middle ring is swaged to match the smaller pipe OD, eliminating the need for a welded reducer or additional fittings.
  • Anchor Ring Design (Type II): Anchor rings welded to the middle ring allow two independent bolt sets to compress each gasket separately for a leak-proof seal on both pipe ends regardless of size difference.
  • Insulating Option Available: Style 39-62 Insulating-Reducing Coupling available for connecting dissimilar metals where cathodic protection is required.
  • Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coating: Interior and exterior corrosion protection for buried or exposed service in water and wastewater systems.
  • No Pipe Preparation Required: No threading, beveling, or precise alignment needed. Installs with standard hand tools.
  • Wide Size Range: Standard Type I available 3 in through 24 in. Type II custom-built to order for any combination of pipe types and ODs — consult factory.

Type II transition couplings for larger or unusual reductions are custom-built to order. Consult factory with pipe ODs and pressure requirements.

Installation Instructions

  1. Surface Preparation: Clean pipe ends of dirt, rust, oil, and scale. Verify pipe ODs fall within the coupling's specified range for each end.
  2. Mark Centering Reference: Measure back on each pipe end one-half the middle ring length plus 2 in and mark with chalk for centering.
  3. Install Followers: Slide one follower over each pipe end, beveled face toward the pipe end.
  4. Lubricate & Install Gaskets: Wipe gaskets clean. Lubricate gaskets, pipe OD, and middle ring flares with soapy water or non-petroleum lubricant.
  5. Assemble Middle Ring: Slide gaskets onto pipe ends. Seat middle ring on one pipe end, then stab second pipe into the other end. Center coupling between chalk marks.
  6. Install Hardware: Thread all bolts and nuts finger tight. For Type II, install both bolt sets independently at each end.
  7. Final Torque — Cross Pattern: Tighten nuts alternately on opposite sides, drawing followers up evenly.
    • 5/8 in Bolts — 75 Ft. Lbs.
    • 3/4 in Bolts — 90 Ft. Lbs.
