Description
Dresser Reducing & Transition Coupling

Style 62 Reducing Coupling
Cast Iron / Ductile Iron to Steel

Bolted mechanical coupling for joining pipes of different ODs — size-on-size CI/DIP to steel, actual pipe-size reductions, or pipe-class changes. Eliminates the need for welded reducers, threaded fittings, or flange-and-spool assemblies.

Sizes 3 in – 24 in (Type I)
Type II Custom Built
Working Pressure 150 PSI
NSF 61 / 372 Certified
Built from Style 38 Parts
Need electrical isolation across the transition? If cathodic protection is required between the cast-iron and steel sides — or whenever dissimilar metals are joined — the Dresser Style 39-62 Insulating Reducing Coupling adds full electrical isolation in the same physical footprint.

The Dresser Style 62 Reducing & Transition Coupling is purpose-built for three distinct field conditions: (1) joining size-on-size steel and cast-iron pipe of the same nominal diameter, (2) making actual reductions in pipe size, and (3) changing the class of pipe within a distribution system. Where standard couplings cannot span the OD difference between the two pipes, the Style 62 fills the gap without requiring flanges, threaded fittings, or welded reducers.

Two configurations cover the full range of transition needs. Type I handles standard size-on-size cast iron / ductile iron to steel connections using Style 38 parts with the middle ring swaged on one end. Type II is custom-built to order for larger or special reductions outside the Type I range — fabricated from Style 38 parts with anchor rings welded to the middle ring and supplied with two independent sets of bolts for separate compression of each gasket.

NSF 61 & 372 Certified
Style 62 Type I couplings are NSF 61 and NSF 372 certified for potable water service. Only products bearing the NSF mark on the product, packaging, or documentation shipped with the product are certified.
Three Field Conditions Solved
Size-on-size CI/DIP to steel transitions, actual pipe-size reductions, and pipe-class changes — all handled by one product family with proven Style 38 sealing components.
Type I (Standard)
For modest OD differences, such as standard cast or ductile iron pipe to steel of the same nominal size. Middle ring is swaged on one end. Standard sizes 3 in through 24 in.
Type II (Custom-Built)
For larger and special reductions outside the standard Type I range. Anchor rings welded to the middle ring; two sets of bolts supplied. Built to order — consult factory with your specific pipe ODs.
Built from Style 38 Parts
Same followers, gaskets, and bolt design as the proven Dresser Style 38 coupling — reliable sealing performance carried into a transition application.
Multiple CI/DIP OD Ranges
OD ranges cover the variability across cast-iron pipe classes (A, B, C, D) at each nominal size. Verify your actual CI/DIP OD before ordering — see Pipe OD Chart below.
Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coating
Factory-applied for corrosion resistance in buried and exposed service. Interior and exterior coverage protects steel in water and wastewater systems.
Tool-Only Installation
No threading, beveling, or precise pipe alignment required. Installs with standard hand tools directly in the field or trench.
Insulating Variant Available
For applications requiring cathodic protection between dissimilar metals, specify the Style 39-62 Insulating Reducing Coupling instead. Same physical footprint, adds full electrical isolation.

Reference part numbers shown are for standard Grade 27 BUNA-S gaskets. Multiple OD options at the 6 in size correspond to different steel pipe OD standards (6.000 vs 6.625). Consult factory for other gasket grades or pipe combinations not listed.

Type II — Custom-Built Transition Couplings
Type II couplings are custom-fabricated for larger or unusual reductions outside the Type I standard range. They use Style 38 parts with anchor rings welded to a specially-fabricated reducing middle ring, and ship with two independent sets of bolts so each gasket can be compressed separately. Use Type II when joining pipes with significantly different ODs (e.g., 24 in CI to 20 in steel, mismatched pipe classes, or non-standard combinations). Consult our team with both pipe ODs, pressure requirements, and gasket compound preferences for a custom quote.
When to Specify Style 62 vs Style 39-62
Specify Style 62 when joining cast-iron / ductile iron pipe to steel pipe where electrical isolation is NOT required (no cathodic protection on the line, no dissimilar-metal corrosion concern). If the joint must be electrically isolated for CP or galvanic protection, use the Dresser Style 39-62 Insulating Reducing Coupling instead — same dimensional footprint with full electrical isolation added.
