Warranty
1 year from the date of installation, or 2 years from the date of manufacture, whichever comes first, under A.Y. McDonald’s published limited warranty terms. The motor carries its original manufacturer’s warranty.

Sizing & Best Practices
How we size an irrigation or transfer pump, and what to check before it goes in.
1. Add up the flow
For irrigation, add the flow of every head in the largest zone that runs at once, from the sprinkler maker’s chart. For household supply, use WSFU and Hunter’s curve (IPC Table 604.3); for light commercial, the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator.
2. Work out the pressure at the pump
Pressure at the pump = pressure the heads need + 0.433 psi per foot of elevation to the highest head + friction loss. Example: a zone of heads needing 25 PSI at 40 GPM, level with the pump, with 5 PSI of friction, from a pond 10 ft below the pump: 30 PSI at 40 GPM from 10 ft of lift. The 1 1/2 HP 89150 delivers 51 GPM at 30 PSI from 10 ft; the 1 HP 89100 delivers 32 GPM and falls short.
3. Check the limits before the curve
Suction: the self-priming pumps are published to 25 ft of lift and lose flow as lift rises; the Workhorse and the 27000 want a flooded suction. Water: the 84000 and Workhorse are rated non-potable. Power: confirm single or three phase and the voltage. Pressure: the 27000 adds its pressure to whatever arrives, so a relief valve is required.
Sizing rule of thumb. If the duty point lands past 70 percent of a model’s maximum pressure at design flow, step up a model. A pump working at the far right of its curve is one that will be replaced early.

Which of these pumps are self-priming?
The 84000, the 89000 E-Series and the 8600SW, the last under normal conditions. The Workhorse end suction pump and the 27000 Super Booster want a flooded suction, or a foot valve and priming tee where the water sits slightly below.
Can I use them for drinking water?
The 27000 Super Booster is certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372. The 84000 and Workhorse are rated for non-potable use only. For the 89000, 8600SW and 1500XSW, A.Y. McDonald publishes no drinking-water rating; ask us before specifying one for potable water.
Which pump for a lawn sprinkler system?
Add up the flow of the largest zone and the pressure the heads need. Most residential zones land on the 89000 E-Series at 1 to 2 HP; large systems on the 84000 at 3 or 5 HP.
How far below the pump can the water be?
A.Y. McDonald publishes the self-priming pumps to 25 ft of suction lift, with flow falling as lift rises. The tables on each product page show the flow at each lift.
What does maximum pressure mean on these pages?
It is the shut-off: the pressure at zero flow, a ceiling rather than a working point. Your duty point sits lower on the curve, at the flow you need.
Does the 27000 Super Booster need a relief valve?
Yes. A.Y. McDonald requires a pressure relief valve on every installation, because the pump adds its pressure to whatever arrives at the inlet.
Do you have three-phase models?
Yes: the 84000, the 1500XSW and the 93000 Workhorse. The 89000, 8600SW and 27000 are single phase.
