Disconnect Types

A sewage pump disconnect lets you lift the pump out of a wet well without entering the well or breaking the discharge piping. Two configurations — guide rail (continuous alignment) and non-guide rail (simpler, less expensive).

Guide Rail Disconnect (SPDS / GRD)

Continuous Alignment · Heavy-Duty Lift Stations

Two stainless guide rails run from grade down to a base elbow on the wet-well floor. The pump slides down the rails into a sealed connection on the base. Pull a chain and the pump lifts straight up the rails — no diving, no alignment hassle. Standard for municipal lift stations and commercial sewage.

Non-Guide Rail (NGRD)

Simpler Install · Smaller Wet Wells

Eliminates the rails. The pump connects directly to a wall-mounted disconnect plate via a pull rod. Best for residential and light-commercial wet wells where the pump is small enough to lift straight up without rail guidance. Lower cost, faster install, fewer parts.

Pull Rod Sizing

Pull rods lift the pump from the disconnect. Stainless rods are corrosion-immune and standard for sewage; mild steel costs less for sump and effluent.

Stainless Mild Steel Length Wet Well Depth Range
PR25SS PR25MS 2 1/2 ft Shallow wet wells · sumps
PR35SS PR35MS 3 1/2 ft Standard residential
PR45SS PR45MS 4 1/2 ft Deeper residential / light commercial
PR55SS 5 1/2 ft Commercial · deep wet wells

Always specify stainless for sewage and septic service. Mild steel rods rust quickly in raw wastewater — they fail at the worst possible moment, when the pump needs service.

Wet Well Install Best Practices

A properly designed disconnect saves hours per pump pull and eliminates confined-space entry — a critical safety win on every wet well.

Specify Lead-Free Where Required

If the wet well services greywater, septic effluent that may contact potable lines, or any installation where local code mandates LF on wastewater fittings, specify SPDS6-LF or SPDS8-LF. Cost premium is roughly 50% but eliminates code rejection.

Match Discharge to Pump Outlet

Disconnect size = pump discharge size. Don't downsize to save cost — restricting the discharge raises pump head, drops flow, and can overheat the motor. 1 1/2 in pump = SPDS6, 2 in pump = SPDS8.

Stainless Pull Rods Always

For sewage, septic, or any wastewater service, mild-steel pull rods rust through within 2–5 years. Stainless costs more upfront but lasts the life of the wet well. The PR series is standard 304 stainless.

Guide Rail Standoff

The MM-14 standoff bracket holds the guide rails parallel and prevents the pump body from contacting the wet-well wall. Required on every guide-rail install — specify one bracket every 5 ft of rail length.

Confined Space Compliance

Properly installed disconnects eliminate the need to enter the wet well for routine pump service — OSHA 1910.146 confined-space entry permits, atmospheric testing, and rescue plans become moot. Disconnects are a worker safety win, not just a convenience.

CVD for Check Service

The CVD5 integrates a check valve into the disconnect — eliminates the separate check valve in the discharge line and reduces leak paths. Specify on residential sewage where space is tight.

Application Selection

Residential Sewage Ejector

Use NGRD6 (1 1/2 in non-guide rail). Match to most residential sewage ejector pumps. Add PR25SS or PR35SS stainless pull rod sized to wet-well depth.

Sump Pump Discharge Kit

Use SPDK1, SPDK2, SPDK3, or SPDK4 sump discharge kits. Pre-assembled with check valve and union for fast install. Match to your sump pump discharge size.

Septic Effluent Pump

Use NGRD5 (1 1/4 in) or NGRD6 (1 1/2 in). Effluent pumps are typically smaller than full sewage — non-guide-rail is sufficient. Always stainless pull rod.

Light Commercial Lift Station

Use SPDS6 or SPDS8 guide-rail system. Restaurant, retail, or light commercial wet wells with daily duty cycles. Add MM-14 standoffs every 5 ft of rail.

Municipal Lift Station

Use SPDS8 or SPD300BA (3 in brass) with full guide-rail kit. High-cycle, heavy-duty service. Specify lead-free where local code applies.

Duplex / Triplex Lift Station

Use multiple SPDS systems — one per pump. Each disconnect is independent so pumps can be pulled individually for service while the others stay in operation.

Flood-Prone Hurricane Zone

Pair guide-rail SPDS with SJE-Rhombus alarm panel. Disconnect enables rapid pump removal and replacement post-flood — critical recovery capability on the Gulf Coast.

Concrete Wet Well Penetration

Use BF-20XA (1 1/4 in) or SF-70XA (2 in) sewage adapter for concrete-set discharge penetrations. Threaded into a core-drilled hole in the wet-well wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sewage pump disconnect and why do I need one?
A sewage pump disconnect lets you lift a submersible pump out of a wet well without entering the wet well and without breaking the discharge piping. The pump connects to the discharge through a sealed sliding joint. To service the pump, you pull a chain or rod and the pump separates from the discharge and lifts straight up. Without one, you'd need to enter the wet well (confined space) to disconnect plumbing.
Guide rail vs non-guide rail — how do I decide?
Guide rail (SPDS, GRD, MGRD) uses two stainless rails to align the pump as it lowers and lifts. Required for larger pumps, deeper wet wells, and any commercial/municipal install. Non-guide rail (NGRD) is simpler and cheaper — the pump lifts straight up without rails. Suitable for residential and light commercial where the pump is small enough that misalignment isn't a problem.
What's the difference between SPDS, GRD, and MGRD?
SPDS is the complete system — disconnect, foot piece, brackets, and pull rod. Buy this for new installs. GRD is the disconnect only — for replacing the disconnect on an existing system where the foot and brackets are reusable. MGRD is the modular disconnect for field-assembled custom installs where the foot is already in place or a non-standard configuration.
Stainless or mild steel pull rod?
Always stainless for sewage and septic. Mild steel pull rods rust through within 2–5 years in raw wastewater — they snap when you try to lift the pump for service. The cost difference is $50–$100 over the life of a wet well. Mild steel is acceptable only for clean sump applications.
Why are some models lead-free?
Wet wells that service greywater, septic effluent that may eventually return to a potable system (e.g., reclaimed water), or where local code requires LF compliance on all wastewater fittings need the LF variants. SPDS6-LF, SPDS8-LF, NGRD6-LF, NGRD8-LF have less than 0.05% lead by weight on wetted surfaces. Specify when in doubt — rejected installs cost far more than the LF premium.
How long does a disconnect last?
Brass and bronze disconnects typically last 15–25 years in residential service and 8–15 years in heavy commercial. The seals (o-rings, gaskets) are the wear items — replace at every pump pull. Stainless guide rails and pull rods last the life of the wet well.
Can I retrofit a disconnect into an existing wet well?
Yes — but it requires a one-time wet-well entry to install the foot piece and brackets. Use a modular disconnect (MGRD) sized to your existing pump discharge. Hire a qualified contractor with confined-space training for the install — do not enter a wet well without proper atmospheric testing and rescue plan.
What size pull rod do I need?
Match pull rod length to wet-well depth + 12 in working room above grade. Shallow residential (3–4 ft deep): PR25SS. Standard 5–6 ft: PR35SS or PR45SS. Deeper commercial 7–8 ft: PR55SS. Always order the longer rod if between sizes — you can extend, but you can't shorten in the field.
Do you stock all sizes?
SPDS6, SPDS8, NGRD6, NGRD8, and all PR-series stainless pull rods ship same-day from Houston. SPDS5, NGRD5, GRD/MGRD models, lead-free LF versions, and the SPD300BA brass 3 in are typically 2–5 day lead time depending on Campbell stock.
