Driven Well System Components

A driven well is the simplest possible water supply — a pointed screen driven into a shallow water-bearing sand layer with a hand or jet pump on top. Suitable for shallow aquifers (typically <25 ft) and off-grid or emergency installations.

1 1/4 in Well Point Sizing Reference

All 1 1/4 in points are stainless steel construction. Mesh size matches aquifer sand grade — finer mesh for finer sand, coarser mesh for coarser sand and gravel.

Part Number Length Mesh Best Aquifer Type
S24-60 24 in 60 gauze Coarse sand / fine gravel
S30-60 30 in 60 gauze Coarse sand / fine gravel
S36-60 36 in 60 gauze Coarse sand / fine gravel
S48-60 48 in 60 gauze Coarse sand / fine gravel
S24-80 24 in 80 gauze Medium sand
S30-80 30 in 80 gauze Medium sand
S36-80 36 in 80 gauze Medium sand — most common
S48-80 48 in 80 gauze Medium sand · deeper aquifer
S24-100 24 in 100 gauze Fine sand / silty water
S30-100 30 in 100 gauze Fine sand / silty water
S36-100 36 in 100 gauze Fine sand / silty water
S48-100 48 in 100 gauze Fine sand · deeper aquifer

Mesh selection rule: Finer aquifer = finer mesh. Mismatched mesh either lets sand through (mesh too coarse) or clogs immediately (mesh too fine). When in doubt, start with 80 gauze — it handles the widest range of typical residential aquifer conditions.

2 in Well Point Sizing Reference

2 in points carry more flow than 1 1/4 in — specify when you need higher GPM at the wellhead.

Driven Well Install Best Practices

A driven well is the simplest possible water supply — but only if the geology cooperates. Get the basics right and you have water for decades.

Verify Aquifer Depth First

Driven wells require shallow water-bearing sand within ~25 ft of grade. Beyond that, the suction lift exceeds atmospheric capacity and a hand or jet pump can't pull water. Check with neighbors or a local driller before driving.

Match Mesh to Sand

The screen mesh must match aquifer sand grade. Too coarse = sand through the screen and pump damage. Too fine = clogs in days. 80 gauze is the safe default for typical residential aquifers; 60 for coarse, 100 for fine.

Drive Cap, Not Point

Always drive on a drive cap or drive coupling — never strike the well point itself. Direct strikes on the point or the screen damage the gauze and ruin the well before it produces water.

Pumping In = Sand Out

After driving to depth, pump the well aggressively for 30+ minutes to develop the screen — this draws fine sand out and creates a natural filter pack of coarser sand around the screen. Skipping this step shortens screen life dramatically.

Cup Leather is the Wear Part

Pitcher pump pumping efficiency drops as the cup leather dries out and cracks. Replace the cup leather (702, 711) every 1–2 years on a regularly used pump. The leather is $15–$30 — a full pump rebuild can be avoided indefinitely.

Off-Grid Backup Capability

A driven well + pitcher pump is a complete off-grid water source requiring no electricity. Highly recommended as emergency backup in hurricane and ice-storm prone areas. Pair with a sanitary well seal at the casing top — even a hand pump well needs surface contamination protection.

Application Selection

Off-Grid Cabin Water Supply

Use S36-80 well point + PP2 cast iron pitcher pump. Reliable hand-pumped supply for shallow aquifers. No electricity required.

Emergency Backup — Hurricane Zone

Use S30-80 well point + WP2 plastic hand-lift pump. Lighter weight, easier to deploy. Pair with stored fuel for jet pump on grid recovery.

Livestock Watering — Pasture

Use S236-60 (2 in) well point + small jet pump. Higher flow for trough fill. Coarser mesh handles typical pasture-area aquifer sand.

Sandy Aquifer (Gulf Coast / East Texas)

Use S36-100 fine-mesh well point. Fine sand requires the 100 gauze to keep silt out of the pump. Develop screen aggressively at first install.

Coarse Sand / Gravel Aquifer

Use S36-60 coarse mesh well point. Larger openings handle the natural coarse aquifer without clogging. Higher flow rate than fine mesh.

Existing Driven Well — Pump Replacement

Pull the existing point if accessible. Replace with same-size point matched to the original mesh (or finer if sand has been a problem). New PP2 + cup leathers for hand-pump installations.

Pitcher Pump Restoration

Use PP2-PA plunger assembly + 711 3X2 cup leather + 700 3 1/2X3 valve leather. Restores a tired pitcher pump to like-new pumping capacity for under $80.

Multi-Section Drive Pipe

Use SWDC5 drive couplings to join galvanized drive pipe sections. Rated for hammer-driving load. Standard 1 1/4 in pipe matches the typical S-series well point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a driven well and when does it make sense?
A driven well is a well point hammered into the ground until it reaches a shallow water-bearing sand layer. Suitable for aquifers within ~25 ft of grade. Common applications: off-grid cabins, emergency backup water, livestock watering on pasture, irrigation supply, garden water. Doesn't require a drilling rig — can be installed by hand with a sledge or a fence-post driver.
How deep can I drive a well?
Practically 25–30 ft maximum. Beyond that, atmospheric pressure can't lift water more than ~28 ft (and that's at sea level on a perfect day). For deeper aquifers, you need a drilled well with a submersible pump — a driven well + hand or jet pump won't reach the water.
What mesh size do I need?
Match mesh to aquifer sand grade. 60 gauze = coarse sand and fine gravel. 80 gauze = medium sand — the safe default for most residential aquifers. 100 gauze = fine sand and silty groundwater (common Gulf Coast / East Texas). When in doubt, ask a local driller what they typically log in your area.
Why stainless steel for the well point?
The screen sits in saturated sand for the well's entire life — galvanized fails within 5–10 years due to electrolytic corrosion at the screen welds. Stainless lasts 20+ years even in iron-laden or salty water. The cost premium over galvanized is small relative to the cost of pulling and replacing a corroded point.
Can I drive a well by hand?
Yes — with a heavy fence-post driver, sledge hammer, or rented well driver. Always strike on a drive cap or drive coupling, never directly on the well point. Bigger wells (2 in points, deeper drives) typically benefit from a powered driver. Houston-area soil is mostly drivable with hand tools to ~20 ft if there's no clay layer.
What's a pitcher pump and how high can it lift?
A pitcher pump is the traditional cast-iron hand-operated atmospheric lift pump. Practical lift is ~22 ft — theoretically 28 ft at sea level but cup-leather and seal losses limit you to ~22 ft. For shallow driven wells under 22 ft, the PP2 is reliable for decades. Above 22 ft you need a deep-well hand pump or a powered jet pump.
How often do I replace cup leathers?
For a regularly used pitcher pump: every 1–2 years. The leather dries out, cracks, and loses its seal — pumping efficiency drops to where you're working hard for half the water. The 702 or 711 cup leather is $15–$30 and a 15-minute job. For pumps used only in emergencies, inspect annually and replace if dry or cracked.
Can I install a sanitary cap on a driven well?
Yes — and you should, especially if the well will be used for drinking water. A driven well still needs surface contamination protection. Specify a Campbell sanitary well seal sized to your drive pipe at the top of the casing where the pump mounts. Hand-pump wells get the same level of contamination risk as electrified wells.
What length well point should I order?
Match to anticipated saturated zone thickness. 24–30 in for thin saturated layers. 36 in standard for most residential. 48 in for thick saturated zones or where you want maximum surface area for higher flow. Longer screens cost more but produce more water and develop better.
