Bantam Sizing Reference

All Bantam adapters are lead-free (LF) or extended lead-free (XLF, ≤0.10% lead). Casing OD ranges are critical — mismatched OD will leak.

LF vs XLF: All meet federal NSF 61/372 lead-free requirements. XLF caps the lead content at 0.10% (vs the 0.25% federal max) — specify XLF for installations under particularly strict state or local codes.

S-Series Sizing Reference

S-Series uses heavier brass and a more substantial threaded body for commercial and irrigation duty.

Installation Best Practices

Pitless install errors are the #1 reason for return service calls. Get these right the first time.

Verify Casing OD First

Wrap a tape and divide circumference by 3.14. Bantam fits 5 9/16–7 in OR 8 5/8 in only — nothing in between. Steel and PVC casing have different ODs at the same nominal size; specify your casing material when ordering.

Match the Hole Saw

Each adapter requires a specific drilled-hole diameter. Don't reuse the hole saw from a different brand's adapter — even a 1/16 in mismatch leaks. Order the matching Campbell hole saw or specify which one you have.

Below the Frost Line

The pitless body must sit below local frost depth. In Houston, this is trivial; in northern climates, your pitless might be 5–7 ft below grade. Plan the casing-top elevation accordingly.

O-Ring Lubrication

Apply silicone-based well-lube to the o-rings before sliding the upper half through the casing. Never use petroleum grease — it degrades neoprene over time and contaminates potable water.

Square Cut on Casing Hole

The drilled hole must be perpendicular to the casing wall. A canted hole creates uneven gasket compression and a chronic slow leak. Use a casing-clamp jig if drilling on-site.

Service Loop on Wires

Leave a service loop on all electrical wires running through the wire fitting. Lifting the pump for service requires slack to disconnect wires above grade — tight wires get cut every time.

Application Selection

Standard Residential — Up to 1 HP

Use B-10LF or B-10XLF. Standard 5 9/16–7 in casing OD. The single most-installed pitless model in the residential market.

Larger Residential — 1 to 3 HP

Use B-20LF or B-20XLF (1 1/4 in service). Steps up the service-line size to handle higher flow without pressure drop.

Commercial / Multi-Family — 3 to 5 HP

Use S-20LF (1 1/4 in S-Series). Heavier body, continuous-duty rated. Pair with 1 1/4 in drop pipe and matching service line.

Irrigation / Small Municipal

Use S-Series 1 1/2 in or 2 in. Higher flow rate, larger casing OD typically 8 5/8 in. Specify pump HP up to 10 for proper sizing.

Concrete Wall / Basement Penetration

Use BF-10LF or BF-20LF. Designed to set into a concrete wall pour or core-drilled basement penetration — not for steel/PVC casing.

Pressurized System

Use BP-10LF or BP-20LF when above-grade pressurization (e.g., booster after the pitless) is part of the system. Stronger seals for pressure cycling.

Aggressive Water Chemistry

Use PA800SS stainless. High chlorides, high iron, sulfide-bearing water all attack brass over time. Stainless is the long-life answer at coastal and shallow-aquifer installs.

Budget Residential / Rental

Use Little B (B-300XLF or B-380XLF) or imported PA800LF. Same function as standard Bantam at lower cost — appropriate for tight-budget residential and rental properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pitless adapter and why do I need one?
A pitless adapter is a fitting that routes the well's discharge pipe out the side of the casing below the frost line. It allows the service line to run horizontally underground to the house while the well casing extends up above grade for cap access. Without it, you'd either need an above-grade well house (expensive) or bury the casing top below grade (illegal in most states).
How do I size a pitless adapter?
Three measurements: (1) Casing OD (5 9/16–7 in or 8 5/8 in for Bantam). (2) Service line size (1 in for residential up to 1 HP, 1 1/4 in for up to 3 HP, 1 1/2 in or 2 in for commercial). (3) Pump HP and duty (Bantam for residential; S-Series for commercial/continuous-duty).
What's the difference between LF and XLF?
Both are NSF 61/372 lead-free compliant. LF meets the federal 0.25% lead-by-weight maximum. XLF caps it at 0.10% — well below federal limits. XLF costs slightly more but is recommended for installs under particularly strict state or local potable-water codes (some Northeastern and California jurisdictions).
What hole saw size do I need?
It varies by adapter model and casing material. Order the Campbell-spec hole saw matched to your adapter — or specify what you already have on hand and we'll cross-reference. Mismatched hole = chronic slow leak. Don't substitute brands' hole saws across pitless models.
Bantam vs S-Series — how do I decide?
Bantam for residential up to 1 HP (1 in) or up to 3 HP (1 1/4 in). S-Series for commercial, continuous-duty, multi-family, and any pump above 3 HP. S-Series has heavier wall thickness and stronger threaded engagement — designed for vibration and pressure cycling.
Can I install a pitless adapter on PVC casing?
Yes, but verify the casing OD — PVC well casing is sometimes oversized compared to steel at the same nominal size. The B-120 series fits 8 5/8 in OD, which matches some 8 in nominal PVC casings. Specialty pitless models exist for non-standard PVC (LSW-style); contact us with the casing OD and wall thickness if you're not sure.
How deep should the pitless be installed?
Below the local frost line. Houston/Gulf Coast: 2 ft is sufficient. North Texas/Oklahoma: 3–4 ft. Northern frost-belt: 5–8 ft. The pitless body and the entire service line out to the house must be below frost — calculate trench depth accordingly.
What about pressurized vs standard?
Standard pitless adapters are designed for the typical 30/50 or 40/60 psi residential range. Pressurized (BP) variants have stronger seals for systems with above-grade pressurization — e.g., boosted irrigation, multi-tank installs, or commercial setups where the pitless sees higher continuous pressure. Specify BP if your system pressure exceeds 80 psi continuously.
Do I need stainless or is brass fine?
Brass is fine for the vast majority of installs. Specify stainless (PA800SS) for aggressive water chemistry — high iron (typical East Texas), high chloride (coastal), or sulfide-bearing groundwater. Stainless costs more but eliminates corrosion-driven failures over the system's 20+ year life.
How do I service a pitless — do I need to dig up the install?
No — that's the whole point of a pitless. The upper half slides out through the casing top using a special pulling rod. The lower half stays threaded into the service line below grade. To pull the pump, lift the upper half straight up with the rod, disconnect the drop pipe above grade, and you're working in daylight. If you can't lift the upper half, the o-rings have failed and the assembly is welded by mineral buildup — that's the only time digging is required.
