Dresser Gasket — Style 60 / Style 160 | Replacement Gasket for Bell Joint Clamps

Bell Joint & Spigot Leak Repair | Grade 27 BUNA-S | Cast Iron, Ductile Iron & PVC Pipe | Service Without Shutdown

Overview

The Dresser Style 60/160 Gasket is the factory-specified replacement sealing element for Dresser Style 60 and Style 160 Bell Joint Clamps — the pipe repair products used to permanently stop leaks at bell-and-spigot joints in cast iron, ductile iron, and PVC pipe distribution systems. Bell joint leaks are among the most common maintenance events in aging water distribution infrastructure, and the Style 60/160 system provides a proven, cost-effective method for repair without pipe replacement, joint disassembly, or service interruption in most cases.

The Style 60/160 gasket is molded to a profile specific to the bell joint clamp body geometry, designed to seal over the exterior of the bell-and-spigot joint. The split construction allows the clamp and gasket to be positioned over the full circumference of the joint and tightened around the bell from the outside. Style 60 covers standard bell joint configurations. Style 160 is designed for newer-dimension or wider bell joint configurations in ductile iron and PVC pipe. Both use the same Grade 27 BUNA-S compound standard.

What Are Dresser Style 60 and Style 160 Bell Joint Clamps?

Bell joint clamps are used when lead caulked, rubber-ring, or push-on bell-and-spigot pipe joints begin to leak — typically in older cast iron mains where original seals have deteriorated, or in systems where differential settlement, thermal movement, or vibration has displaced the original joint seal. The Style 60 clamp is installed over the outside of the bell joint; the sealing gasket, compressed by the clamp body and bolts, conforms to the bell OD and spigot OD to contain the joint from the exterior. Style 160 provides additional width to cover the larger bell dimensions found in modern ductile iron and PVC push-on joint pipe. Repairs are permanent and can be made without cutting out the joint or shutting down the main in most field conditions.

Key Features

  • Fits Both Style 60 and Style 160 Bell Joint Clamps: One gasket designation covers both clamp styles, simplifying parts inventory for maintenance crews servicing mixed-pipe distribution systems.
  • Seals From Outside the Joint: No joint disassembly required. Clamp and gasket wrap the exterior of the bell-and-spigot joint for an outside-in seal — the original joint seal remains in place under the repair clamp.
  • Live Line Repair in Most Applications: Designed for installation on pressurized lines without service interruption — reducing excavation cost and eliminating the need for dewatering or system shutdown.
  • Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, and PVC Pipe: Style 60 covers standard bell dimensions on cast iron mains. Style 160 covers larger bell profiles on modern ductile iron (AWWA C151) and PVC (AWWA C900/C905) push-on pipe.
  • Grade 27 BUNA-S Standard: General utility compound rated to 212°F, compatible with potable water, salt water, gas, air, and most utility distribution service fluids.
  • Permanent Repair: Not a temporary patch — the Style 60/160 system is designed as a permanent repair rated for full service pressure operation.

Style 60 vs. Style 160 — When to Use Which

Clamp Style Designed For Typical Pipe Types
Style 60 Standard bell joint configurations; older pipe dimensions Cast iron mains; older ductile iron; lead-caulked joints
Style 160 Larger bell profiles; modern push-on joint dimensions Modern AWWA C151 ductile iron; AWWA C900 PVC push-on pipe

Verify bell joint OD and clamp style before ordering. Incorrect gasket profile will result in improper sealing geometry.
