A service saddle clamps a threaded outlet onto the main with a broad, pressure-activated gasket, so the corporation stop threads into the saddle instead of the pipe wall. It avoids leaking threads and split pipe and reinforces the connection. JCM builds ductile iron saddles with single or double straps, coated versions for hot and corrosive soils, an all-stainless saddle and a saddle for concrete steel cylinder pipe.

Reliability

ASTM A536 ductile iron bodies, Buna-N gaskets bonded into a retaining cavity, electro-galvanized or 304 stainless straps, and an optional 12 mil fusion-plastic coating rated over 12,000 volts dielectric.

Fit

JCM rates its ductile iron saddles at 250 PSI working pressure and the 502 at 200 PSI working, 225 PSI test. Wide body and wide straps suit PVC and thin-wall pipe; the 502 is not for HDPE.

The 502 is all 304 stainless with an 8 in band, 5/8 in studs and an EPDM gasket for chloramine and hot water. The 425 makes 3/4 to 2 in taps on concrete steel cylinder pipe with a separate bolt-in outlet that reinforces the pipe before the prestress wire is removed.

Verdict: Smith-Blair 317 publishes a higher rating (300 PSI) and taps to 4 in. The JCM 404 carries a Buna-N gasket rated to 212°F and has a fusion-plastic coated twin (406). Dresser T3 is the wide-range answer when the OD is uncertain.

Verdict: the JCM 502 publishes 200 PSI against the Smith-Blair 372's 150 PSI, and its EPDM gasket suits chloraminated water. Smith-Blair 372 reaches larger pipe (17.46 in OD); Dresser T3 also comes in 316 stainless and a removable-lug version.

Sizing and Best Practices

Measure the OD, not the nominal size

Wrap a pipe OD tape (or a string) around the pipe at the repair. Circumference divided by 3.1416 is the OD. Our JCM 920 pipe diameter tape reads the diameter directly in 100ths of an inch.

Pick the range around your number

Choose the OD range that contains the measured OD, ideally near the middle of the range. Out-of-round or corroded pipe is a reason to step to an extended range style.

Know the pipe material

Cast iron, ductile iron and C900 PVC share one OD family; IPS PVC, steel and HDPE share another; asbestos cement runs larger. Two pipes of the same nominal size can need different fittings.

Match the thread

IP (NPT) and CC (AWWA corporation stop) threads are not interchangeable. Order the outlet that matches the corporation stop.

Tap through the saddle

Install the saddle and corporation stop, then tap the main through the stop with a tapping machine.

Large taps

Above 2-1/2 in, use a tapping sleeve; the full sleeve reinforces the pipe around a larger hole.

Can a saddle fix a leaking direct tap?

Yes. The double strap 402 to 408 have a large sealed outlet area that repairs holes, pin holes and leaking 3/4 and 1 in direct taps.

Is the 502 suitable for HDPE?

No. JCM recommends the 502 for IPS PVC, C900 PVC, ductile iron, cast iron and steel, not HDPE.

What does the coating do?

The 405, 406, 407 and 408 carry a fusion-bonded blue plastic coating, 12 mils minimum, with over 12,000 volts dielectric strength, for hot and corrosive soils.

How do I tap concrete cylinder pipe?

Use the JCM 425: its bolt-in outlet reinforces the pipe before the prestress wire is removed, and it takes 0 to 1-1/8 in of concrete coating. JCM recommends grouting the saddle.
