Description

The Smith-Blair Style 317 is a double-strap ductile iron service saddle for tapping branch connections on new or existing water mains, with outlets from 5/8 in CC up to 4 in NPT. The wide wraparound body carries a TaperSeal Nitrile gasket fully bonded in its cavity, and two Type 304 stainless steel straps with welded studs hold it to the pipe and add corrosion resistance.

The body is designed with PVC and other soft or brittle pipe in mind: the wide straps spread the load so tightening does not damage the pipe, and a closed lug on one side acts as a hinge for easier installation. On 16-24 in sizes the body takes ductile iron spherical washers that seat the strap nuts and align the straps. It also serves for air/vacuum valves, pitot tubes, drain valves and other service equipment.

Application: service taps and branch outlets of 5/8 to 4 in on 4-24 in water mains, including HDPE with spring washers.

Key Features

  • Working pressure up to 300 PSI, depending on size and application
  • Large outlets: 3 in and 4 in NPT on selected 6-18 in sizes
  • TaperSeal hydro-mechanical lip holds higher pressure with minimal nut torque
  • Two wide straps spread the load to protect PVC, HDPE and other non-rigid pipe
  • Meets applicable AWWA C800; certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372
What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the epoxy-coated ductile iron body with the TaperSeal gasket in place, two 304 stainless straps with welded studs, fluoropolymer-coated stainless nuts and stainless flat washers (plus ductile iron spherical washers on 16-24 in).

Spring washers on HDPE, ordered separately: Smith-Blair spring washers p/n 150115-002 are required on HDPE, DR17 or thicker, 4-16 in nominal; ask us to quote them with the saddle.

Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.

Working Pressure

Up to 300 PSI. depending on size and application. Smith-Blair notes the allowable pressure depends on the type of pipe, pipe diameter, service conditions and installation workmanship.

Installation Notes
  • Confirm the saddle type, tap size and pipe OD range match the job, then clean the pipe where the gasket will seat, removing scale, dirt and debris.
  • Check the gasket is seated in the body; lubricate the pipe and gasket with a soap-and-water solution (anti-freeze may be required) that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements.
  • Mount the body as close to the final tap position as possible and check its orientation before tightening: moving or rolling the body on the pipe can damage the gasket.
  • Tighten the nuts progressively and evenly to the torque in the instructions, keeping the stud lengths on both sides equal; do not over-torque. The saddle seals the tap and is not designed to give structural rigidity to connections or equipment, so support those separately.
  • On HDPE, fit Smith-Blair Belleville spring washers p/n 150115-002 under the nuts without removing the flat washers; other spring washers may cause failure.
  • Plastic pipe limits: steel-OD PVC 4.50-12.75 in of DR26 or thicker; cast/ductile iron OD C900 PVC Class 150 (DR18) or better; HDPE 4-16 in, DR17 or thicker. Not for fiberglass-reinforced or plastic irrigation pipe. Make the outlet connection with a lubricating, sealing thread compound, never tape.
