A tapping sleeve wraps the main with a full sleeve and a gasketed outlet; a tapping valve bolts to the outlet and a tapping machine cuts the main through the valve while it stays in service. JCM builds fabricated carbon steel sleeves that weigh less than cast sleeves, extra-wide epoxy-coated sleeves for PVC, stainless sleeves with full-circle or outlet-seal gaskets, and threaded outlet sleeves.

Reliability

A full sleeve reinforces the pipe opposite the tap. Large-section gaskets in a retaining cavity seal tighter as pressure rises; flanged outlets carry the MSS-SP60 tapping valve recess; MJ outlets have load-bearing set pins.

Fit

JCM service ratings: 175 PSI on flanged carbon steel, PVC and outlet-seal stainless sleeves; 250 PSI on the 419, 429 and 439 on 4-12 in pipe and on the 418 and 438. The 422 and 429 are for PVC and steel, not cast iron, ductile iron or A/C.

Full-circle gasket sleeves (432, 462, 439, 469) seal the whole pipe, insurance against beam breaks on size-on-size taps, with replaceable self-aligning bolts torqued to 125 ft-lb. Heavy-duty outlet-seal sleeves (452, 464, 459, 465) add thicker metal and extra bolting for high pressure and problem taps.

Sizing and Best Practices

Measure the OD, not the nominal size

Wrap a pipe OD tape (or a string) around the pipe at the repair. Circumference divided by 3.1416 is the OD. Our JCM 920 pipe diameter tape reads the diameter directly in 100ths of an inch.

Pick the range around your number

Choose the OD range that contains the measured OD, ideally near the middle of the range. Out-of-round or corroded pipe is a reason to step to an extended range style.

Know the pipe material

Cast iron, ductile iron and C900 PVC share one OD family; IPS PVC, steel and HDPE share another; asbestos cement runs larger. Two pipes of the same nominal size can need different fittings.

Undersized cutter on size-on-size

Size-on-size taps need a shell cutter 1/2 in undersize; the 422 and 429 always take the 1/2 in undersized cutter.

Valve recess

Flanged outlets are recessed for the tapping valve per MSS-SP60; for outlets 14 in and larger, name the tapping valve make.

Test before tapping

Sleeves furnished with the 3/4 in NPT test plug let you pressure-test the sleeve before cutting.

Flanged or MJ outlet?

Match the tapping valve: a flanged tapping valve needs a flanged outlet with the MSS-SP60 recess; an MJ tapping valve needs an MJ outlet.

Which sleeve for PVC pipe?

The 422 (flanged) and 429 (MJ) are extra wide and fusion-epoxy coated for IPS PVC, C900 PVC, steel and HDPE. JCM does not recommend them for cast iron, ductile iron or A/C.

Full-circle or outlet seal gasket?

Full-circle gasket sleeves (432, 462, 439, 469) seal the whole pipe and guard against beam breaks on size-on-size taps; JCM does not recommend them for HDPE. Outlet-seal sleeves (452, 464, 459, 465) are heavy duty for high pressure and large outlets.

Do I need an undersized cutter?

Yes for size-on-size taps: use a shell cutter 1/2 in undersize. The 422 and 429 call for the 1/2 in undersized cutter.

Can tapping sleeves be returned?

JCM lists the 459 and 465 with outlets 3 in and smaller as non-returnable. Confirm the run OD, outlet size and outlet type before ordering.

What is a threaded outlet sleeve for?

The 418 and 438 give a full-sleeve 3/4-4 in NPT outlet for services and air relief on larger, thin-wall or reinforced pipe where a saddle is not enough.
