Description

The Smith-Blair Style 315 is a single-strap ductile iron service saddle for tapping branch connections on new or existing water mains. A wide, wraparound body carries a TaperSeal Nitrile gasket fully cemented in its cavity, and a 2 in wide Type 304 stainless steel strap holds it to the pipe and adds corrosion resistance. On 1-3 in sizes the strap is welded to a stainless bale; on 4-14 in sizes it carries welded stainless studs.

The body is designed with PVC and other soft or brittle pipe in mind: the wide strap spreads the load so tightening does not damage the pipe, and a closed lug on one side acts as a hinge with the strap for easier installation. It also serves for air/vacuum valves, pitot tubes, drain valves and other service equipment.

Application: service taps and branch outlets of 5/8 to 2 in on 1-14 in water mains.

Included: the epoxy-coated ductile iron body with the TaperSeal gasket cemented in place, the 304 stainless strap (with bale on 1-3 in, welded studs on 4-14 in), fluoropolymer-coated stainless nuts and stainless washers.

PVC-sized bodies: rows marked for C900 PVC in the Smith-Blair tables meet the Uni-Bell Handbook of PVC Pipe and AWWA M23 requirements when the body is ordered sized to the PVC pipe.

12-Month Smith-Blair Warranty

Smith-Blair warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment by Smith-Blair. Dated proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale, is required to establish eligibility. Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.

Installation Notes
  • Confirm the saddle type, tap size and pipe OD range match the job, then clean the pipe where the gasket will seat, removing scale, dirt and debris.
  • Check the gasket is seated in the body; lubricate the pipe and gasket with a soap-and-water solution (anti-freeze may be required) that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements.
  • Mount the body as close to the final tap position as possible and check its orientation before tightening: moving or rolling the body on the pipe can damage the gasket.
  • Tighten the nuts progressively and evenly to the torque in the instructions, keeping the stud lengths on both sides equal; do not over-torque. The saddle seals the tap and is not designed to give structural rigidity to connections or equipment, so support those separately.
  • Make the connection with a pipe-thread compound that both lubricates and seals (no tape products), without cross-threading or rocking the saddle body.
  • Plastic pipe: use on steel-OD PVC 4.50-12.75 in of DR26 or thicker, or cast/ductile iron OD C900 PVC Class 150 (DR18) or better; do not use on fiberglass-reinforced pipe, plastic irrigation pipe or other plastic pipe.
