Cast Iron vs ABS — Which to Choose

Both seal water equally well when sized correctly. The choice is driven by water chemistry, system permanence, and budget.

SUB — Cast Iron Well Seal

Premium · Long-Life · Permanent Install

The traditional well seal. Cast iron upper plate with neoprene gasket and steel bolts. Standard for submersible installations. Solid and split versions for retrofit work where you can't pull the drop pipe. SUB6X1, SUB4X1 1/4, SUB6X2 are the highest-velocity SKUs.

PS — ABS Well Seal

Lightweight · Corrosion-Immune · Lower Cost

Engineered ABS upper plate. Roughly half the cost of cast iron and corrosion-immune to iron-laden, salty, or chemically active groundwater. Standard size range matches cast iron. Ideal for shallow wells, jet-pump installs, and Gulf Coast water chemistry.

Submersible Pump Screens

SPS Series · Sand & Grit Protection

Stainless mesh screens that surround the submersible pump intake. Available in .010, .015, .020, and .060 slot sizes for varying sand grades. 4 in by 60 in standard length covers most residential pumps. Critical in sandy aquifers — one screen costs less than one pump rebuild.

Well Seal Vents

Atmospheric Balance · Pitcher Pump Compatibility

Vent tubes for well seals where atmospheric balance is required — pitcher-pump installations, shallow wells with high water-table swing, and any application where the casing needs to breathe. Threaded into the seal's vent port. Includes screened end to keep insects out.

Cast Iron Sizing Reference (SUB Series)

Match seal to casing OD (not ID) and pipe size. Single = submersible drop pipe only; Double = jet pump suction + pressure pipes.

SUB6X2 6 in 2 in Single 6 in casing high-flow
SUB2X1 1/4GS 2 in 1 1/4 in Single (Split) 2 in casing driven well

Suffix legend: G = galvanized pipe size match · S = split (retrofit) · GS = galvanized + split. Solid seals require the drop pipe to be threaded through; split seals open and reclose around an existing pipe.

ABS Sizing Reference (PS Series)

ABS seals follow the same casing-OD logic. PDJ series is purpose-built for jet-pump installs (4 in casing, 1 in suction, 3/4 in pressure).

Installation Best Practices

A well seal is the only barrier between groundwater and surface contamination. Install it once, install it right.

Measure Casing OD First

Wrap a tape around the casing and divide circumference by 3.14 to get OD. Never trust nominal labels — PVC well casing OD differs from steel even at the same nominal size.

Solid vs Split

Solid seal is preferred for new installs — lower cost, fewer leak paths. Split seal (-S or -GS) is for retrofits where you can't unthread the drop pipe to slide a solid seal over.

Torque Sequence

Tighten bolts in a star pattern, then re-torque after 30 minutes. Casing-clamp bolts seat the rubber gasket evenly — one-side-only torque tilts the seal and leaks immediately.

Match Pipe Size Exactly

Pipe-hole gaskets are sized to one nominal pipe OD. 1 in galvanized is not the same OD as 1 in PVC — specify the pipe material when ordering, especially on G-suffix seals.

Sanitary Compliance

Most state well codes require a watertight seal at the casing top. The well seal sits below grade with a watertight cap above — never substitute a vented cap as the seal.

Vent if Pumping Atmospheric

Pitcher pumps and shallow-well jet pumps need a vent for atmospheric pressure balance. Add the vent kit at install — don't drill the cap later.

Application Selection

New Submersible Install — 4 in casing

Use SUB4X1G or SUB4X1 1/4 (cast iron) for permanent installs. Use PS4X1 or PS4X1 1/4 (ABS) for budget or high-iron water.

New Submersible Install — 6 in casing

Use SUB6X1 or SUB6X1 1/4 for residential. SUB6X1 1/2 or SUB6X2 for commercial / multi-family with larger drop pipe.

Jet Pump Install

Use PDJ4A ABS jet seal (4 in casing, 1 in suction + 3/4 in pressure). For 6 in casings, specify a custom double-hole cast iron seal — we'll match drilled holes to your suction and pressure pipe sizes.

Retrofit / Replace Without Pulling Pump

Use split seal (-S or -GS suffix). Opens around the existing drop pipe and re-bolts. SUB4X2GS, SUB6X1G — these save a full pump pull on a leak repair.

High-Iron / Coastal Water

Use ABS PS series. Cast iron stains and pits in iron-laden or salty groundwater — ABS is immune. Pair with stainless well cap.

Sandy Aquifer

Add SPS4X60 stainless pump screen around the submersible intake. Slot size: .010 for fine sand, .020 for medium, .060 for coarse. Saves the pump on dirty wells.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my casing for the right well seal?
Wrap a tape measure around the outside of the casing at the top and divide the circumference by 3.14 (pi) to get the outside diameter. Match that OD to the seal model number — SUB4 = 4 in OD casing, SUB6 = 6 in OD casing. Don't measure the inside diameter; seals clamp the outside.
Cast iron or ABS — which is better?
Both seal water identically when sized correctly. Cast iron (SUB) is the long-life premium choice for permanent submersible installs and clean water. ABS (PS) is corrosion-immune — specify it for high-iron, salty, or chemically active water. ABS is also lighter and roughly half the cost.
Single hole vs double hole — what's the difference?
Single hole is for submersible installs — one hole for the drop pipe carrying water up from the pump. Double hole is for jet-pump installs — one hole for the suction line going down, one for the pressure return line. Add a third small hole only if you're adding a vent or pitless lateral.
What does the G suffix mean?
G = galvanized pipe sizing. Galvanized steel pipe has a slightly different OD than PVC at the same nominal size, so the gasket hole is sized differently. SUB4X1G fits 1 in galvanized drop pipe; SUB4X1 (no G) fits standard 1 in PVC. Always specify your drop-pipe material when ordering.
What does the S or GS suffix mean?
S = split. The seal opens in two halves around an existing drop pipe and bolts back together. Use this for retrofits when you can't pull the pump or unthread the drop pipe. GS = galvanized + split. Combined for retrofitting on a galvanized drop pipe. Solid seals are stronger and cheaper — only buy split when you have to.
Do I need a well seal AND a well cap?
Yes — they serve different purposes. The well seal sits below grade and seals the casing against groundwater intrusion at the drop-pipe penetration. The well cap sits above grade and protects against rain, debris, insects, and surface contamination. Most state well codes require both.
Can I reuse a well seal after pulling the pump?
Technically yes if the gasket isn't compressed or torn, but at $40–$200 for a new seal it's not worth the leak risk. Always replace the seal when pulling the pump. Inspect the casing top for corrosion or out-of-round damage at the same time.
What pump screen slot size do I need?
Depends on aquifer sand grade. Most residential wells: .020 slot handles typical sand. Fine silty water: .010 or .015. Coarse sand and gravel aquifers: .060. If you're not sure, ask your driller what sand grade was logged when the well was drilled.
