Baker Submersible Pump AutoPAC Package

Baker AutoPAC Constant Pressure Submersible Pump Packages

A complete constant-pressure well system in one order — Baker stainless steel submersible pump, motor, and AutoDRIVE VFD pre-matched and ready to install. Available from 5 to 80 GPM in two pump series, with pressure switch or transducer control. Drop it in the well, wire it up, set your pressure, done.

What Is the AutoPAC & Why Does It Exist?

Ordering a constant-pressure well system piece by piece means selecting a pump, matching a motor, choosing the right AutoDRIVE VFD model, confirming wire compatibility, and verifying that the pump's HP and electrical characteristics work with the drive. Get any one of those wrong and you're either returning parts or damaging equipment. Baker's AutoPAC eliminates this entire process by bundling the submersible pump, motor, motor leads, and AutoDRIVE variable frequency drive into a single factory-matched package — ordered under one part number, shipped together, and guaranteed to work as a system.

Every AutoPAC delivers constant water pressure by continuously adjusting motor speed to match real-time demand. Instead of cycling between cut-in and cut-out like a traditional system, the pump ramps up and down smoothly to maintain whatever pressure you set on the AutoDRIVE's display. The result is city-water-like pressure at every fixture, dramatically reduced pressure tank requirements, lower energy consumption, and far fewer start/stop cycles that wear out pumps and motors prematurely.

AutoPAC packages are available across Baker's complete 4-inch submersible pump lineup — from 5 GPM domestic wells to 80 GPM high-flow commercial applications — in both the 23000 Domestic Stainless Steel and 24000 Stainless Steel series, with horsepower from 1/2 HP through 5 HP.

What's Included in Every AutoPAC Package

Baker Submersible Pump End

Stainless steel pump end sized to your GPM and HP requirements. Built-in check valve, stainless steel suction screen, and high-efficiency impellers matched to the motor's output.

Baker Submersible Motor

Factory-matched 4" stainless steel motor in your choice of 2-wire, 3-wire single phase, or 3-wire three phase configuration. Motor leads included. All 230V, 60 Hz.

AutoDRIVE VFD

Baker's American-made variable frequency drive in the correct model (SD1 for single phase, SD3 for three phase) pre-matched to your motor. NEMA 3R outdoor enclosure with large backlit display.

Pressure Control

Your choice of pressure switch (APS suffix) or pressure transducer (APT suffix) for sensing system pressure. Transducer provides tighter regulation; pressure switch is simpler and lower cost.

3 HP and 5 HP AutoPAC packages ship as sales kits in three separate boxes (pump/motor, AutoDRIVE, and accessories) due to the weight and size of larger assemblies. All other HP ratings ship as a single package.

How to Read an AutoPAC Model Number

Every AutoPAC model number tells you exactly what's inside the box. Here's how to decode it:

GPM Selection Guide — Match Your Well to the Right AutoPAC

GPM (gallons per minute) is the pump's flow rate capacity. Choosing the right GPM depends on your well's recovery rate, the number of fixtures in your home or building, and peak simultaneous demand. Here's the general sizing framework:

Five Configuration Options Per GPM Size

Every AutoPAC GPM size is available in up to five configurations, depending on your motor wiring and phase requirements. Understanding these options is critical to ordering the right package:

Configuration Wire Phase Control AutoDRIVE Model HP Range Best For
2W Single Phase + Pressure Switch 2-Wire Single APS SD1-2HP2PS ½ – 1½ HP Simplest install, budget option
3W Single Phase + Pressure Switch 3-Wire Single APS SD1-2HP2PS ½ – 2 HP Standard residential with basic control
2W Single Phase + Transducer 2-Wire Single APT SD1-2HP2 ½ – 1½ HP Tighter pressure regulation
3W Single Phase + Transducer 3-Wire Single APT SD1-2HP2 ½ – 2 HP Best residential constant pressure
3W Three Phase + Transducer 3-Wire Three APT SD3 series 1 – 5 HP Higher HP, max efficiency
Key note on three-phase AutoPAC packages: The SD3 AutoDRIVE converts 230V single-phase input to three-phase output, so you can run a three-phase motor on standard residential single-phase power. Three-phase is the only option for 3 HP and 5 HP packages, and three-phase models are transducer-only (no pressure switch option).

AutoPAC Master Pricing Overview

The table below shows the Sell Price range for each GPM size across all available configurations and HP options. Prices vary based on series (23000 vs. 24000), wire configuration, control method, and HP. Three-wire single-phase models are typically less expensive than two-wire equivalents because the control box is separate from the motor, and three-phase models carry a premium for the SD3 AutoDRIVE's phase conversion capability.

80 GPM AutoPAC packages are only available in three-wire three-phase with transducer configuration (3 HP and 5 HP). These are commercial/municipal systems that require the SD3-3HP2 or SD3-5HP2 AutoDRIVE for the power demands at this flow rate.

AutoDRIVE Model Used by HP Range

SD1-2HP2PS
⅓ – 2 HP • 1Φ In → 1Φ Out • Pr.Switch
SD1-2HP2
⅓ – 2 HP • 1Φ In → 1Φ Out • Transducer
SD3-2HP2
2 HP • 1Φ In → 3Φ Out • Transducer
SD3-3HP2
3 HP • 1Φ In → 3Φ Out • Transducer
SD3-5HP2
5 HP • 1Φ In → 3Φ Out • Transducer

All AutoPAC packages use the same AutoDRIVE VFD platform. The model inside the box is determined by your HP and phase requirements.

AutoPAC vs. Buying Pump + AutoDRIVE Separately

You can build the same constant-pressure system by ordering a Baker submersible pump and AutoDRIVE VFD as separate items. Here's when each approach makes sense:

Factor AutoPAC Package Separate Components
Ordering One part number, one order Must select and match pump, motor, and VFD separately
Compatibility Factory-guaranteed match You verify HP/wire/phase compatibility
Price Package pricing (typically saves on combined cost) Individual component pricing
Flexibility Fixed pump + VFD combination Can mix AutoDRIVE with any compatible pump
Replacement If pump fails, replace just the pump — keep the AutoDRIVE Same
Best for New installations where you're buying everything at once Retrofitting an AutoDRIVE onto an existing pump, or replacing only one component

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the AutoPAC include a pressure tank?

No. Because the AutoDRIVE adjusts motor speed to maintain constant pressure, you only need a small buffer tank (typically 2–5 gallons) rather than a full-size 20–80 gallon pressure tank. The buffer tank is ordered separately. Baker offers a complete line of diaphragm tanks starting at 2 gallons.

Can I use an AutoPAC with a well that has a low yield?

Yes — this is actually one of the AutoPAC's strongest use cases. The VFD slows the pump to match the well's actual recovery rate rather than running at full speed and cycling on and off. For low-yield wells, choose the 5 GPM (J) or 7 GPM (V) series with a lower HP motor. The AutoDRIVE will ramp down to match whatever flow the well can sustain.

What's the difference between pressure switch (APS) and transducer (APT)?

A pressure switch is a mechanical device that opens and closes contacts at set pressure points — it's simpler and cheaper but provides ±2–3 PSI accuracy. A pressure transducer sends a continuous electronic signal (4–20mA) to the AutoDRIVE, giving ±0.5 PSI accuracy. For the best constant-pressure experience, we recommend the transducer (APT) models. The price difference is typically $300–$400 per package.

Why are three-wire models cheaper than two-wire models?

Two-wire motors have starting components built into the motor housing down in the well. Three-wire motors use an above-ground control box for starting, which makes the motor simpler and less expensive. However, three-wire motors require one additional wire run down the well. For AutoPAC purposes, the three-wire models are the better value.

Why are 3 HP and 5 HP AutoPAC packages only available in three-phase?

The SD1 single-phase AutoDRIVE maxes out at 2 HP. For 3 HP and 5 HP motors, you need the SD3 AutoDRIVE which outputs three-phase power (while accepting single-phase input from your utility panel). This means 3 HP and 5 HP AutoPAC packages are only available in the three-wire three-phase with transducer configuration.

I only see 5–25 GPM in the 23000 Series. Can I get a high-flow (35–80 GPM) 23000 AutoPAC?

No. Baker's 23000 Series Domestic Stainless Steel pumps are only manufactured in 5–25 GPM flow rates. For 35 GPM and above, you must use the 24000 Stainless Steel Series, which is the only series with high-flow pump ends.

Can I add Pumptec pump protection to my AutoPAC system?

The AutoDRIVE VFD included in every AutoPAC already provides motor protection features including overload protection, over/under voltage protection, and no-flow detection. Adding Pumptec is generally unnecessary and could interfere with the AutoDRIVE's operation. Consult Baker technical support before adding any external protection device to an AutoPAC system.

What well casing size do I need for an AutoPAC?

All AutoPAC packages use Baker's 4-inch submersible pumps and motors. The pump assembly requires a minimum 4-inch well casing. If your well has a 6-inch or larger casing, the 4-inch pump will still work — you'll just have more annular space around the pump, which actually improves motor cooling.

How do I know which GPM to order if I don't know my well's flow rate?

Your well driller's report should include the tested flow rate. If you don't have it, a qualified pump installer can perform a flow test. As a rule of thumb, never install a pump that exceeds your well's recovery rate — the AutoDRIVE will slow the motor down, but if the pump capacity far exceeds the well's yield, you'll still risk running the well dry during sustained demand.
