Description

The Dresser Style 90 "Universal" Coupling is engineered for polyethylene gas service pipe connections — joining PE to PE, PE to steel, and steel to steel in a single versatile design that meets ASTM D2513 requirements. Where standard Style 90 fittings are designed for steel-to-steel installations, the Universal coupling adds PE compatibility through the use of a plastic insert stiffener that supports the pipe wall inside the fitting, maintaining the SDR wall thickness under gasket compression.

The Universal coupling ships fully assembled with the same proven boltless compression design as the rest of the Style 90 family — threaded end nuts, self-centering gasket retainer cups, and resilient gaskets — but with the added grip ring and stiffener components required for polyethylene service. Standard working pressure is 150 PSI, and the design accommodates a range of PE pipe SDR specifications per D.O.T. 192.283(b).

Key Features
  • Connects PE to PE, PE to steel, and steel to steel — one coupling, three connection types
  • Meets ASTM D2513 for polyethylene gas pressure pipe
  • Plastic insert stiffener maintains pipe wall integrity under gasket compression for PE pipe
  • Grip ring provides positive pipe retention and pullout resistance
  • Ships fully assembled — same fast boltless installation as standard Style 90
  • 150 PSI standard working pressure
  • Available sizes: 3/4" through 2" IPS
  • Do NOT use pipe end inserts (P.E. stiffeners) from other sources — use Dresser-specified inserts only

Polyethylene pipe pullout resistance is based on use of Dresser reinforcing pipe inserts. Pullout resistance unless noted is based on body strength. For reducing size couplings, the rating for the smallest diameter pipe applies.

Installation Summary
  1. Clean steel pipe ends to bare metal, removing oil, dirt, and rust. Polyethylene pipe must be free of dirt. Use 5" long bodies or fittings for 7" lengths, 7" for 10" lengths.
  2. On all PE pipe ends, check that the Dresser insert stiffener is installed and matches the SDR of the pipe. Do not use pipe end inserts from other manufacturers.
  3. Remove plastic identification plug from the end nut; confirm gasket and grip ring are loose and free of debris.
  4. Apply soap-water to gaskets (anti-freeze may be added in freezing conditions). Mark each pipe 2" from the pipe end and stab to the mark.
  5. Tighten each end nut independently using 100 lb. minimum pull on the recommended wrench size. A minimum of 1/2" engagement between pipe ends and pipe stop is required.
? STAB DEPTH WARNING: Pipe MUST be stabbed to the proper depth mark. Failure to do so could result in escaping line content and cause property damage, serious injury, or death.
