Installation Standards & Sizing Reference

Specification reference for the most-installed Campbell categories. Match these dimensions to your job before ordering.

Hydrant Bury Depth

Specify hydrant bury depth equal to or greater than local frost line. Houston/Gulf Coast: 2 ft minimum. North Texas/Oklahoma: 3 – 4 ft. Northern states: 5 – 8 ft. Heavy-duty models go to 10 ft.

Pitless Casing Match

Pitless adapters mount through the casing wall. Order by casing OD (4 in, 5 in, or 6 in nominal) and service-line size (Bantam 1 in; S-Series 1 1/4 in, 1 1/2 in, 2 in). Drilled hole must match adapter spec.

Well Seal Hole Count

Single-hole = submersible drop pipe only. Double-hole = jet-pump suction + pressure pipes. Add a third hole only with vent kit. All seals are casing-OD specific — do not substitute by ID.

Pressure Switch Range

Square D 9013 standard ranges: 20/40 (low-pressure systems), 30/50 (most residential), 40/60 (typical with bladder tank), 50/70 (high-pressure or two-story). Always specify cut-in/cut-out.

NSF 61 / 372 — Lead-Free

Federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act (2014) requires ≤0.25% lead by weight on potable-water wetted surfaces. Campbell offers NSF 61/372 brass and bronze across well seals, pitless, tank tees, and ball valves. Always specify "LF" suffix for new install.

Tank Tee Sizing

Match tank tee port to tank inlet (typically 1 in or 1 1/4 in NPT). Include drain valve, gauge port, switch port, and relief port. Pre-assembled packages save 30+ minutes per tank install.

Frostproof Hydrant Quick Reference

Most-ordered hydrant configurations — standard inlet sizes and bury depths. Replacement parts available for every model.

Model Inlet Bury Depths Body Best For
Heavy Duty 3/4 in · 1 in NPT 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 ft Cast iron + brass Farms, commercial, livestock
Compact 3/4 in NPT 1, 2, 3, 4 ft Cast iron + brass Residential, garden, irrigation

Wall Faucet 1/2 in · 3/4 in 4, 8, 10, 12, 14 in Brass body Exterior building walls

Pitless Adapter Quick Reference

Casing OD and service-line size determine the adapter. Always match drilled hole to adapter spec — mismatched holes will leak.

Series Service Line Casing OD Pump HP Range Application
Bantam 1 in 4 in · 5 in · 6 in Up to 1 HP Residential submersible
S-Series 1 1/4 in 4 in · 5 in · 6 in 1 – 3 HP Larger residential / light commercial

S-Series 2 in 6 in 5 – 10 HP Irrigation · small municipal
Clear-Casing 1 in · 1 1/4 in 4 in · 5 in · 6 in Up to 3 HP Open-bore / non-standard casings
Specialty Varies Varies Varies Plastic casing · deep set · custom

Well Seal Sizing Reference

Well seals are casing-OD specific. Match the seal to the casing exactly — never substitute by ID. Single-hole for submersible drop pipe; double-hole for jet-pump suction + pressure.

Casing Size Material Hole Config Pipe Sizes Accepted Best For
4 in Cast iron Single hole 1 in · 1 1/4 in drop pipe Residential submersible
4 in Cast iron Double hole 1 1/4 + 1 in suction/pressure Jet-pump install
4 in ABS Single hole 1 in · 1 1/4 in Corrosive water · light duty
4 in ABS Double hole 1 1/4 + 1 in Jet pump · iron-staining water
5 in Cast iron Single · Double Up to 1 1/2 in pipe Larger residential
6 in Cast iron Single hole 1 1/4 in · 1 1/2 in · 2 in Commercial · deep submersible
6 in Cast iron Double hole 1 1/2 + 1 1/4 in Larger jet-pump systems

Tip: Add a well-seal vent kit when installing a pitcher pump or where atmospheric balancing matters. Vents are also recommended on shallow wells with high water-table fluctuation.

Pressure Switch & Tank Pre-Charge Reference

Pressure-tank pre-charge must be set 2 psi below the cut-in pressure. Mismatched precharge is the #1 cause of switch chatter, short cycling, and bladder failure.

Switch Range Cut-In Cut-Out Tank Pre-Charge Typical Application
20/40 20 psi 40 psi 18 psi Low-pressure / gravity-assisted systems
30/50 30 psi 50 psi 28 psi Standard residential
40/60 40 psi 60 psi 38 psi Most common modern residential
50/70 50 psi 70 psi 48 psi Two-story homes · long supply runs
60/80 60 psi 80 psi 58 psi High-pressure / commercial

Always check pre-charge with the tank empty and isolated from system pressure. Adjust with a standard tire-valve gauge and bicycle pump or low-pressure compressor.

Tank Tee Configuration Reference

Match tank tee port size to your pressure tank inlet. Pre-built packages include all required fittings — saves install time and eliminates leak points.

Tank Tee Size Tank Volume Range Standard Ports Material Application

Houston & Gulf Coast Application Notes

Local conditions drive a few non-obvious sizing and material choices for water-well and pump installs in the Gulf Coast region.

Bury Depth — Houston Metro

Frost line is essentially zero. 1 ft or 2 ft compact yard hydrants are sufficient for residential. Heavy-duty 3 ft – 5 ft is over-spec for frost but still preferred for high-flow livestock and commercial.

Iron-Bearing Water

Much of east Texas and the Gulf Coast pulls iron-rich groundwater. ABS well seals and stainless well caps outlast cast iron 3:1. Brass and stainless ball valves resist staining and pitting from high-iron, high-chloride water.

Hurricane / Storm Backup

Lift stations and effluent pumps in flood-prone areas need SJE-Rhombus alarm panels with high-water alarms and battery backup. Add a Campbell sewage disconnect to enable rapid pump removal post-flood.

NSF 61 Required Statewide

Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requires NSF/ANSI 61 compliance on all wetted parts in public water systems — and best-practice on private wells. Always specify "LF" suffix Campbell brass for new install.

Salt-Air Coastal Installs

Within ~10 miles of the coast, salt-spray accelerates corrosion. All-stainless Ideal hose clamps (Q2 series), brass or stainless valves, and ABS well seals are mandatory for hurricane-grade installations.

High-Iron Pressure Switches

Standard Square D switches can foul in high-iron systems. Specify the diaphragm-style switch or install an inline sediment filter ahead of the switch port. Inspect switch contacts annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Campbell an authorized brand at Watermain Supply?
Yes. We are an authorized Campbell distributor with full catalog access — including specialty SKUs (filtration cartridges, metering pumps, UV systems, Rusco strainers) that are not commonly stocked. If a Campbell part number exists, we can ship it.
Are Campbell products NSF 61 / 372 lead-free?
Campbell offers both lead-free and standard brass across most catalog lines. Look for the "LF" or "TLF" suffix in the part number (e.g., MAB 2TLF). Federal law (2014) requires lead-free brass on all new potable-water installations — we'll confirm compliance on every order before shipping.
What's the difference between cast iron and ABS well seals?
Cast iron is the heavier, longer-life option — specified for permanent submersible installations, deep wells, and commercial service. ABS is corrosion-immune and lighter — ideal for jet-pump installations, shallow wells, and where iron staining is a water-quality concern. Both seal equally well when sized correctly to the casing.
How do I size a pitless adapter?
Three measurements: (1) Casing OD — 4 in, 5 in, or 6 in nominal. (2) Service-line size — 1 in (Bantam) for residential up to 1 HP, 1 1/4 in – 2 in (S-Series) for larger systems. (3) Drilled hole size — must match the adapter's spec exactly. Order the matching hole saw or specify which one you have on hand.
Which yard hydrant for Houston / Gulf Coast?
Frost line in Houston is essentially zero, so a Compact 1 ft or 2 ft bury depth is sufficient for residential. North Texas and the panhandle should use 3 ft. For commercial and livestock applications, the Heavy-Duty model is recommended regardless of frost depth — the 1 in inlet handles higher flow without pressure drop.
Do I need a sanitary (ASSE 1057) hydrant?
Yes if there's any chance of cross-connection with non-potable water — irrigation tanks, livestock troughs, chemical sprayers, hose-end fertilizers. The ASSE 1057 internal vacuum breaker prevents siphoning back into the potable supply when the hydrant is off. Many municipalities and the IPC require it on all exterior hydrants.
Square D pressure switch — which range do I order?
30/50 psi is the most common residential range. 40/60 psi pairs with a properly precharged bladder tank for stronger fixture pressure. 50/70 psi for two-story homes or where pressure drops at second-floor showers. Always set the bladder-tank precharge to 2 psi below cut-in — mismatched precharge causes short cycling and switch failure.
What's the difference between SJE-Rhombus mercury and mechanical floats?
Mercury floats are quieter, longer-life, and rated for higher current — preferred for residential effluent and sump applications. Mechanical floats use a spring-loaded micro-switch — mercury-free, required by some jurisdictions, and used in most municipal lift-station builds today. Both work; the choice is usually code-driven.
Do tank-fitting packages save real time?
Yes — a pre-built tank tee with gauge, switch, drain, and relief port saves roughly 30 minutes per tank install, eliminates the trip back for "the one fitting I forgot," and reduces leak points. Worth the small price premium on every install over 10 tanks.
Do you ship same day?
Yes — orders for stocked SKUs placed before 2 PM Central ship the same business day from our Houston warehouse. Specialty and import-pricing SKUs may have a 2–5 day lead time. We'll confirm the exact ship date on quote acceptance.
Can you cross-reference Boshart, Merrill, or Simmons part numbers?
Yes — the cross-reference table above covers the most-requested equivalents. For anything not listed, email the part number, brand, and a photo if possible to sales@watermainsupply.com. We'll return a Campbell equivalent within one business day with confirmed dimensional and material match.
What's the difference between bladder and air-over-water tanks?
Bladder tanks use a sealed butyl bladder — no AVC needed, longer life, modern standard. Air-over-water (galvanized hydropneumatic) tanks need a Brady AVC or bleeder fitting to maintain the air cushion. We stock Campbell components for both, but recommend bladder tanks on all new residential installs.
Are Ideal Q1 vs Q2 vs Q3 vs Q4 clamps interchangeable?
Functionally similar but spec-different. Q1 is the standard zinc-plated band with stainless screw — general use. Q2 is all-stainless — specify for coastal, food-grade, or corrosive service. Q3 covers the installation tool and ratchet driver category. Q4 is the single-ear pinch clamp series — one-time crimp install on PEX, hose barbs, and insert fittings.
What if I'm replacing a single hydrant part — do you sell parts?
Yes — full replacement parts are available for all three hydrant lines (Heavy Duty, Compact, Sanitary). Plunger kits, link rods, packing assemblies, head assemblies, valve seats, and complete riser-pipe replacement. Specify your hydrant model and bury depth and we'll match the correct kit.
