A CR pump end is an entire Grundfos vertical multistage hydraulic assembly with the motor left off. Suction and discharge sit on the same centreline at the same height, so it drops into a straight pipe run; head comes from stacking stages rather than from a bigger impeller, so the same footprint covers a wide pressure range and a system can be re-tuned by changing the stack rather than the pump.

The horsepower and NEMA frame printed against each part number are a selection rating and a mounting face — they say what motor the pump end is built to accept, not what ships with it. The standard rebuild. A cast iron pump head and base with an AISI 304 stainless liquid path -- the hydraulic assembly out of the CR pump most commercial boosting, HVAC and irrigation duty already runs on.

All AISI 316. The molybdenum in 316 is what resists chloride pitting, and it is the whole reason to choose CRN over CRI -- so it is also the reason a CRN pump must be rebuilt with a CRN pump end, not a CRI one.

Quick rule. Rebuild like for like. A CRN pump exists because the water has chlorides in it, so putting a CRI pump end into it takes away the reason the pump was specified. Going the other way — a CRN pump end into a CR installation — works mechanically and costs more than it needs to. If the nameplate is unreadable, send us a photograph of the pump and the duty point and we will identify it.

Stage count is the second number in the model. More stages means more head at the same flow, in the same footprint.

The motor rating column is the motor the pump end is built to accept. No motor is supplied. Shipping weights are the freight figures, which run heavier than net weight — the tall stacks on the 10 frame ship by LTL freight rather than parcel, and the product pages say which models those are. For a duty point against a specific model, request the Grundfos curve; head converts at 0.433 psi per foot of elevation.

Connections

Every range offers an ANSI flanged build and one alternative. The connection is cast into the head and base, so it is not something that can be changed in the field.

CRI is FlexiClamp, not NPT. Some price lists describe the non-flanged CRI connection as NPT. Grundfos Product Center returns FlexiClamp, type CA for all 78 of those part numbers, at 1 1/4 in and 2 in. It is a clamped stub, not a threaded port, and a pump end ordered on the wrong assumption will not thread onto existing pipework.
Victaulic couplings are rated above the pump. The grooved coupling on a CRN pump end is a PN 50 fitting, but the pump end itself is a 25 bar assembly, so the pump rating is the binding limit — design to the pressure in the table above, not to the coupling. Couplings and gaskets are not supplied with the pump end.

How to Order

Five things off the nameplate, in this order. Get the first four right and the part number falls out of the table on the product page.

1. The range. CR, CRI or CRN. It is the first thing on the nameplate and it is the material grade — cast iron head with 304 internals, all 304, or all 316. Rebuild like for like.

2. The frame and stage count. The model reads as frame dash stages: CR 5-16 is the 5 frame with sixteen stages. The frame sets the flow band, the stage count sets the head. If the duty has changed, this is the number to change — that is the whole point of buying a pump end rather than a pump.

3. The connection. ANSI flanged, or the second style your range offers. Cast into the head and base; it has to match the pipework already in the ground.

4. The seal code. HQQE or HQQV. The last letter is the elastomer — E is EPDM, V is FKM (Viton). If you are pumping water, HQQE. Match what is in the pump unless the liquid has changed.

5. The motor you already have. Confirm the NEMA frame and the coupling against the motor you intend to fit before you buy. The HP and frame printed against a part number are what the pump end accepts, not what ships. A pump end that fits the pipe but not the motor is still the wrong part.

Re-staging. Changing stage count changes the head at the same flow, and the motor has to carry it. Going up two stages on the same motor is often fine; going up six is often not. Send us the existing model, the new duty and the motor nameplate and we will check the absorbed power against the curve before you order.

Cartridge shaft seal

The seal arrives as a complete unit with the faces pre-set. No lapping, no measuring, no setting spring length on the bench — which is most of the reason a pump-end swap is a morning rather than a day.

In-line hydraulics

Suction and discharge on one centreline at one height. The pump end drops back into the same straight pipe run with no offset and no re-piping.

Stage stack, not impeller size

Head comes from how many chambers are stacked. The footprint stays the same across the whole pressure range, and a duty change is a stack change.

Silicon carbide faces

Both seal codes run silicon carbide against silicon carbide. The difference between HQQE and HQQV is the elastomer, not the faces.

Certified on the published part numbers across all three ranges — the drinking-water approval most municipal and commercial specifications call for.

Does a pump end include the motor?

No. A pump end is the hydraulic assembly only: pump head, base, chamber stack, impellers, shaft, sleeves and the cartridge shaft seal, factory assembled. The horsepower and NEMA frame shown against each part number are a selection rating and a mounting face, not a motor that ships.

What else is not included?

The motor, the coupling and coupling guard, the motor stool where one is required, controls, starters, drives, base plates, foundation bolts and isolation valves. Oval flanges are included on the NPT build of CR. Victaulic couplings and gaskets are not included on CRN.

Can I fit a CRI pump end to a CRN pump?

Mechanically it will go together, but it defeats the specification. CRN exists because the liquid carries chlorides and 316 resists chloride pitting where 304 does not. Rebuild like for like.

How do I read the model number?

Frame dash stage count. CR 5-16 is the 5 frame with sixteen stages. The frame sets the flow band and the stage count sets the head.

Can I change the stage count when I rebuild?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to buy a pump end. Keep the frame and the connection and change the stack. Confirm the motor can carry the new absorbed power before ordering, because more stages at the same flow means more power.

What is the difference between HQQE and HQQV?

The elastomer. Both are cartridge seals with silicon carbide faces. E is EPDM, V is FKM (Viton). For water, HQQE. Match what is already in the pump unless the liquid has changed.

Is the CRI connection NPT?

No. Grundfos Product Center returns FlexiClamp, type CA, for every non-flanged CRI pump end. Some price lists describe it as NPT and that is wrong. It is a clamped stub, not a threaded port.

Which flange class do the ANSI builds use?

CR 3 and CR 5 are ANSI 250 lb; CR 10 is ANSI 300 lb on a different flange type. Every CRI and CRN ANSI pump end is 300 lb. Check the frame, not the range.

Do I need a gasket kit as well as a seal kit?

A full strip-down usually needs both, but they are separate products and are ordered separately. Buying one does not bring the other with it.

How are these shipped?

Most ship by parcel carrier. The heavier stacks ship on a pallet by LTL freight, and the product page names which models those are. A delivery appointment, a dock or a liftgate may be needed.
