Quick rule. Need flanged head above ~325 ft? Start at HC. Moving high volume at moderate head? Start at XS. Threaded replacement or general boosting? Start with D and AG, and use FAC for a compact 3–5 HP, 2 in × 2 in NPT duty. In every case the selected model curve, not the family ceiling, decides the pump.

What changes between the families

Comparison Practical distinction
AG vs D Both list 150 psi working pressure and threaded selections. AG also offers flanged versions and stainless-steel impellers; D impeller material varies by hydraulic model. AG ceilings are 900 GPM / 325 ft versus 650 GPM / 300 ft for D.
FAC vs D FAC is the focused 3–5 HP, 2 in × 2 in NPT option; D spans more hydraulic sizes and a wider horsepower range. FAC uses GL-SiC seal faces and FKM elastomers; the D catalog describes carbon/ceramic faces with nitrile as standard.
AG vs HC AG offers NPT and Class 125 flanged selections; HC uses Class 150 flanged connections and a ductile-iron volute. HC limits extend to 1,900 GPM, 450 ft and 350 psi — selection still requires the specific curve.
HC vs XS HC has the higher head ceiling (450 ft vs 180 ft); XS the higher capacity ceiling (2,000 GPM vs 1,900 GPM). XS is 1,800 RPM only; HC includes 1,800 and 3,600 RPM designs. These figures do not establish a direct replacement.

Rated Performance

The catalogs publish family ceilings and model curves, not tabulated duty points, so we quote the nominal ceilings and select from the curve — we never invent curve points.

The figures in the comparison above are the highest capacity, head and working pressure each family reaches somewhere across its models. They do not occur together: a pump at its maximum flow is near zero added head, and a pump at maximum head is near zero flow. The usable duty point sits between those extremes and is read from the curve for the specific model, speed and impeller trim.

Working pressure is a separate equipment limit from the head the pump adds. A 350 psi HC casing rating is not a 350 psi pressure rise; the curve sets pump-added head at the operating flow, and inlet pressure adds on top of that when you check the casing, seal and piping limits.

Head to pressure. Boost in psi equals head in feet multiplied by 0.433. A pump adding 100 ft of head raises pressure about 43 psi. For the exact model, request the manufacturer curve and read head, efficiency, power and NPSHR at your design flow. Confirm against the current Franklin Electric data booklet.

Sizing & Best Practices

How we size a centrifugal pump, and what to check before installing.

1. Calculate required boost

Required boost = target pressure at the highest fixture + 0.433 psi per foot of elevation + friction loss at design flow − available inlet pressure. Worked example: a three-story building with the highest fixture 30 ft above the pump, 45 psi wanted at that fixture, 12 psi of friction loss at design flow and 40 psi city inlet needs 45 + (0.433 × 30) + 12 − 40 ≈ 30 psi of boost — about 70 ft of head (30 ÷ 0.433). Select a model that delivers roughly that head at the design flow, read from the curve.

2. Estimate peak flow honestly

Size flow to simultaneous demand, not the sum of every fixture. For residential and multi-family, convert fixture units with the Hunter curve (IPC Table 604.3 water-supply fixture units); for light commercial, use the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator, which gives lower, more realistic peaks for modern low-flow fixtures. Oversizing to a fixture-count total pushes the pump left of its best-efficiency point and shortens seal and bearing life.

3. Check model limits

Confirm the 60 Hz variant’s inlet-pressure and suction-lift limits, the 212°F maximum liquid temperature, and the enclosure (ODP vs TEFC) for the environment. Match connection type and size — NPT versus flanged, and the flange class — and remember a flange-class number is a joint rating, not the pump’s working-pressure limit. Verify all wetted materials and elastomers against the actual liquid.

Sizing rule of thumb. If the duty point lands past about 70 percent of a model’s maximum head at the design flow, step up a model — it leaves headroom for friction the estimate missed and keeps the pump off its steep end.

A stainless-steel impeller does not make the whole pump stainless. Confirm all wetted materials and elastomers against the liquid; catalog options and repair-kit configurations can differ from the standard construction summarized here.

Connection type

NPT and flanged versions need different piping. Match suction size, discharge size and flange class — and do not read a flange-class number as the pump’s working-pressure rating.

Motor speed & trim

An 1,800 RPM selection and a 3,600 RPM selection are not equivalent, and impeller trim shifts the curve. Match the complete catalog model when replacing an existing pump.

Service access

AG, HC and XS use back-pullout construction; HC and XS add casing jack-out holes. Allow space for the service arrangement shown in the dimensional drawing.

Motor enclosure

ODP is open drip-proof; TEFC is totally enclosed fan-cooled. Availability varies by model — choose for the installation environment.

Seal materials

Faces and elastomers differ across families — carbon/ceramic with nitrile on D, AG and XS; silicon-carbide with FKM on FAC and HC. Match them to the liquid, not to the pump size.

Not a packaged booster

These are pump-and-motor units. A variable-frequency drive, pressure sensor, tank or control panel is defined separately when the pump is used in a constant-pressure booster system.
