Overview

The mechanical seal is the part that decides how long a close-coupled pump runs. Franklin lists a standard seal and two upgrades for these pumps: the standard carbon and ceramic seal with a Nitrile elastomer and 316 stainless steel parts, option A with silicon carbide faces and an EPDM elastomer, and option B with silicon carbide faces and an FKM elastomer.

Silicon carbide faces handle abrasives and dry-run episodes better than carbon and ceramic. The elastomer decides chemical and temperature compatibility: EPDM for hot water and many treatment chemicals, FKM for oils and hydrocarbons. If you are replacing a seal that failed early, moving up a grade is usually cheaper than doing the job twice.

Before You OrderMatch the shaft size and the pump series from the pump nameplate. Replace the shaft sleeve and the case O-ring at the same time; a new seal on a grooved sleeve fails quickly.
