Warranty
Cerus X-Drive drives and panels carry Franklin’s standard limited warranty for one year from the date of installation, and in no event more than two years from the date of manufacture, per the Cerus X-Drive Installation and Operation Manual. Franklin’s X-Drive brochure (M1789) adds that drives are eligible for an Extended Warranty when paired with a Franklin-supplied motor and pump.

Reliability
In QD and CRC boxes the solid-state QD relay outlasts a voltage relay, and every box is built from components Franklin tests as a matched set for its own motors. The X-Drive trips on overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, ground fault, input phase loss and output phase open, and adds pump protections such as underload, broken pipe and no-flow. Short-circuit rating is 100 kA with suitable Class J fuses.

Quick rule. Single-phase 3-wire submersible at fixed speed: a Franklin control box matched to the motor HP and voltage. Three-phase motor and you want variable speed: X-Drive — SUB panel for a submersible, CEN panel for a surface pump, stand-alone drive if it goes inside your own enclosure. The one mistake we see most: choosing a drive on horsepower alone when the motor amps are higher than the drive rating.

The motor decides first: each maker builds its box around the starting components its own 3-wire motor needs, so buy the box that matches the brand on the motor nameplate, or send us the nameplate and we will confirm a match. After that: Franklin wins on choice and on single small boxes — it is the only one of the three with a 1/3 HP box, a run-capacitor box (CRC) at 1 HP and under, and the solid-state QD relay. Grundfos wins on price from 1-1/2 HP up, and its Standard box uses a motor protective circuit breaker, but its 1/2 to 1 HP boxes come only in packs of ten, which suits a contractor stocking a truck better than a homeowner. McDonald AutoDRIVE is the only drive here that gives variable speed to a single-phase 2-wire or 3-wire motor, up to 2 HP, which saves replacing the motor. Sizing and Matching Franklin Drives and Control Boxes
Controls are matched, not guessed. Every part here is chosen from the motor nameplate, the power supply and the cable run.
3-Wire Control Box: Match Brand, HP, Voltage and Wires
Read the motor nameplate. It must say 3-wire, single-phase. The control box HP and voltage must equal the motor HP and voltage; a box for a larger or smaller motor carries the wrong capacitor and overload values. Use the box brand that matches the motor.
Worked example (control box and part). 1 HP, 230V, 3-wire Franklin submersible on a pressure switch. Franklin offers the QD box 280 108 4915, the CRC box 282 408 5015 (adds a 23 MFD, 370 V run capacitor), or the Standard 282 300 8110 that covers 1 to 1-1/2 HP. If an existing QD box 280 108 4915 fails to start the motor, the M1748 parts table lists start capacitor 105-126 MFD, 220 V (kit 305 207 913) and QD relay (kit 305 101 904) for that box. Match the capacitor MFD and voltage exactly.
X-Drive: Match the Motor, Then the Supply, Then the Cable
1. Motor. X-Drive panels are horsepower-rated: the HP in the part number (XS4BH025-3A = 25 HP) should match the motor nameplate HP, and the voltage code (2 = 200-230V, 4 = 460V, 6 = 575V) the motor voltage. Stand-alone drives are amp-rated: the drive output must be at least the motor FLA, or SFA for a submersible.
2. Supply. The input suffix -3A is three-phase, -1A single-phase. On single-phase input a stand-alone drive delivers reduced output: about half the three-phase rating on smaller frames and about one third on larger frames, as listed per model.
3. Cable. Franklin’s X-Drive Quick Start for 460V and 575V: load reactor from 45 to 100 ft drive-to-motor, dV/dt filter from 100 to 1,000 ft, sine wave filter beyond that. For submersible pumps the guide calls for the dV/dt filter at 800 ft, and catalog M1748 requires an output filter on any permanent-magnet motor (dV/dt to 800 ft, sine wave beyond). Output reactors and filters are not required at 200/230V. Size power wire for less than 2% voltage drop.
Worked example (stand-alone drive). 20 HP, 460V, 6 in submersible. Franklin lists a service factor amp figure of 30.3 A for this motor in the X-Drive Low Harmonics sheet M5055. Three-phase supply: CXD-032A-4V is rated 32 A, and 32 A ≥ 30.3 A, so it covers the motor. Single-phase supply: CXD-032A-4V drops to 16 A and CXD-060A-4V to 30 A, both under 30.3 A; CXD-073A-4V delivers 36.5 A on single-phase and covers it. A 600 ft cable route sits in the 100–1,000 ft band, so add a dV/dt filter rated at least 30.3 A: V1K35A03 (35 A, NEMA 3R) outdoors. The panel alternative is XS4BH020-3A, which already includes the reactor or choke and the dV/dt filter.

Why does a 3-wire submersible motor need a control box?
A Franklin 3-wire single-phase motor has no starting components inside it. The control box supplies the start capacitor, relay and overload protection, and on CRC boxes a run capacitor. The box must match the motor HP and voltage on the nameplate. A 2-wire motor has its starting parts built in and uses no control box.
QD, CRC, Standard or Deluxe: which control box do I need?
QD boxes cover 1/3 to 1 HP with the solid-state QD relay. CRC boxes cover 1/2 to 1 HP and add a run capacitor for smoother operation. Standard boxes cover 1 to 10 HP at 60 Hz, and Deluxe boxes cover 1 to 15 HP and add a magnetic line contactor so no external contactor is needed.
Can I use a Grundfos or A.Y. McDonald control box on a Franklin motor?
Match the box to the brand on the motor nameplate. How do I order the right control box replacement part?
Read the model number on the control box label, not the motor, and send it to us. Franklin lists every capacitor, relay, overload and contactor by kit order number against that box model. Match capacitor microfarad and voltage ratings exactly; the same microfarad rating at a different voltage is not a substitute.

Franklin X-Drive or Grundfos CUE: which drive should I buy?
Choose the Grundfos CUE when the pump is Grundfos, since Grundfos engineers the CUE for its own pumps, and the CUE 100 for a Grundfos SP well on single-phase power with the transducer included. Choose the Franklin X-Drive for Franklin and other-brand motors, MagForce permanent-magnet motors, packaged outdoor panels with the filtering inside, sizes to 600 HP, and Modbus or BACnet without an add-on card. We supply both.
What is the difference between the X-Drive SUB and CEN panels?
Both use the same Cerus X-Drive in a NEMA 3R panel with a disconnect. The SUB panel is set up for 4, 6 and 8 in submersible motors and listed from 3 to 550 HP; the CEN panel is set up for centrifugal and surface pumps and listed from 3 to 600 HP. Choose by where the motor is: down the well or on the pad.
Can an X-Drive panel run a three-phase motor from single-phase power?
Yes. Panels with the -1A suffix take single-phase input through UL-listed phase conversion: 3 to 30 HP at 200-230V, and at 460V up to 75 HP for SUB and 100 HP for CEN panels. A stand-alone drive also runs on single-phase input at a reduced output listed for each model.
When do I need a load reactor or a dV/dt filter?
At 460V and 575V, Franklin calls for a load reactor from 45 to 100 ft between drive and motor, a dV/dt filter from 100 to 1,000 ft, and a sine wave filter beyond 1,000 ft. On MagForce permanent-magnet motors an output filter is required at any length: dV/dt up to 800 ft, sine wave beyond, per catalog M1748. At 200/230V output filtering is not required.
