Quick rule. Three-phase motor and you want variable speed: X-Drive — SUB panel for a submersible, CEN panel for a surface pump, stand-alone drive if it goes inside your own enclosure. Single-phase 3-wire submersible at fixed speed: a Franklin control box matched to the motor HP and voltage. The one mistake we see most: choosing a drive on horsepower alone when the motor amps are higher than the drive rating.
Sizing and Matching Franklin Drives and Control Boxes
Controls are matched, not guessed. Every part in this collection is chosen from the motor nameplate, the power supply and the cable run.
X-Drive: Match the Motor, Then the Supply, Then the Cable
1. Motor. X-Drive panels are horsepower-rated: the HP in the part number (XS4BH025-3A = 25 HP) should match the motor nameplate HP, and the voltage code (2 = 200-230V, 4 = 460V, 6 = 575V) the motor voltage. Stand-alone drives are amp-rated: the drive output must be at least the motor FLA, or SFA for a submersible.
2. Supply. The input suffix -3A is three-phase, -1A single-phase. On single-phase input a stand-alone drive delivers reduced output: about half the three-phase rating on smaller frames and about one third on larger frames, as listed per model.
3. Cable. Franklin’s X-Drive Quick Start for 460V and 575V: load reactor from 45 to 100 ft drive-to-motor, dV/dt filter from 100 to 1,000 ft, sine wave filter beyond that. For submersible pumps the guide calls for the dV/dt filter at 800 ft, and catalog M1748 requires an output filter on any permanent-magnet motor (dV/dt to 800 ft, sine wave beyond). Output reactors and filters are not required at 200/230V. Size power wire for less than 2% voltage drop, and use the Franklin AIM Manual for submersible cable gauge.
Worked example (stand-alone drive). 20 HP, 460V, 6 in submersible. Franklin lists a service factor amp figure of 30.3 A for this motor in the X-Drive Low Harmonics sheet M5055. Three-phase supply: CXD-032A-4V is rated 32 A, and 32 A ≥ 30.3 A, so it covers the motor. Single-phase supply: CXD-032A-4V drops to 16 A and CXD-060A-4V to 30 A, both under 30.3 A; CXD-073A-4V delivers 36.5 A on single-phase and covers it. Cable route 600 ft sits in the 100–1,000 ft band, so add a dV/dt filter rated at least 30.3 A: V1K35A03 (35 A, NEMA 3R) outdoors. The panel alternative is XS4BH020-3A, which already includes the reactor or choke and the dV/dt filter. We confirm the final selection against your motor nameplate and the Franklin submittal.
3-Wire Control Box: Match HP, Voltage and Wires
Read the motor nameplate. It must say 3-wire, single-phase. The control box HP and voltage must equal the motor HP and voltage; a box for a larger or smaller motor carries the wrong capacitor and overload values. The 220V Standard boxes on our listing (282 350 8110, 282 351 8110, 282 352 8110, 282 253 9010) are 50 Hz models in Franklin catalog M1748 — for U.S. 60 Hz service choose the 230V box.
Worked example (control box and part). 1 HP, 230V, 3-wire Franklin submersible on a pressure switch. Franklin offers the QD box 280 108 4915, the CRC box 282 408 5015 (adds a 23 MFD, 370 V run capacitor), or the Standard 282 300 8110 and Deluxe 282 300 8310 that cover 1 to 1.5 HP. If an existing QD box 280 108 4915 fails to start the motor, the M1748 parts table lists start capacitor 105-126 MFD, 220 V (kit 305 207 913) and QD relay (kit 305 101 904) for that box. Match the capacitor MFD and voltage exactly.
