VFD Line and Load Reactor
Input (line) and output (load) reactors for variable frequency drives, 3% and 5% impedance, NEMA 1 and NEMA 3R, 200 to 600V, sized by motor horsepower.
Overview

A reactor is an inductor in the drive circuit. On the line side it smooths the current the drive draws, cuts harmonic distortion on the supply and absorbs voltage transients before they reach the drive. On the load side it slows the rate of voltage rise reaching the motor, which protects the winding insulation on longer cable runs.

When you need one. Franklin’s rule for the Cerus X-Drive: on 460V and 575V, fit a load (output) reactor where the drive-to-motor distance is 45 to 100 ft; past 100 ft use a dV/dt output filter instead, and past 1,000 ft a sine wave filter. On the input side, X-Drive pump panels already include a line reactor or a DC choke, and the drive has a built-in DC choke from 50 HP at 230V and 60 HP at 460V and 575V, so a separate line reactor is not needed at those ratings.

3% or 5%. 3% is the general-purpose choice. 5% gives more harmonic reduction and more transient protection where the supply is stiff or noisy, at the cost of slightly more voltage drop. Some part numbers are listed by Franklin for load duty; those are marked in the table.

What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the reactor or filter selected above, identified by its Franklin part number in the last option.

Drive and wiring: matched to the drive and motor on site.

Models & Ratings

Every rating comes in NEMA 1 (indoor or in-panel) and NEMA 3R (outdoor). Pick the voltage, duty and enclosure in the options above; the last option shows the Franklin part number.

Source: Franklin Electric Drives, Controls and Protection catalog, line reactor tables, and the Franklin Electric price list effective 15 Jun 2026. Horsepower is the motor rating Franklin pairs with each reactor; where the table shows a dash, the part is not listed against a horsepower in the catalog — size it on amps.

Before You OrderSize on motor full-load amps first and horsepower second, and match the voltage class. Pick the enclosure for where it mounts: NEMA 1 inside a panel or a clean indoor space, NEMA 3R outdoors. Tell us the drive model, motor FLA and cable run and we will confirm whether you need a reactor, a dV/dt filter or neither.
