Grundfos CRE Variable-Speed Multistage Pumps

Grundfos CRE is the CR vertical multistage platform with an MLE motor on top: a permanent-magnet motor with the variable-speed drive built into its terminal box, plus the control panel that lets the pump hold a pressure setpoint on its own. One unit replaces the
fixed-speed pump, the throttling valve and the separate drive panel.

Three frames at 60 Hz, each published at two rated speeds, because an MLE motor is not tied to the 3600 rpm a two-pole induction motor turns: CRE 3 at 15.5 or 17.6 GPM, CRE 5 at 27.3 or 29.6 GPM and CRE 10 at 45.9 or 51.6 GPM, with rated head to 646 ft and shut-off to 840 ft on the tallest stack. Motors are 1/2 to 15 HP (P2) on 200-240 V single phase, 200-240 V three
phase or 440-480 V three phase, fixed per part number. Connections are oval with NPT female threads rated 232 psi, or ANSI 250 lb flanged rated up to 362 psi. HQQE cartridge seals with silicon carbide faces throughout.

Constant Pressure From The Pump Itself

Grundfos builds the CR vertical multistage platform in Denmark and Kansas, and the CRE is that platform with an MLE motor on top: a permanent-magnet motor with the frequency converter integrated into its terminal box, plus the control panel and function module that let it hold a setpoint. Because an MLE motor is not tied to the 3600 rpm a two-pole induction motor turns on 60 Hz, Grundfos publishes a second set of part numbers rated at 4000 rpm, which reach further up the head and flow range on the same hydraulics.

Quick rule. Match the frame to the flow you need at the busiest moment, then choose the stack that covers the boost. Going up a frame to cure weak pressure at a single outlet is the usual mis-buy โ€” that is a head problem, and a taller stack in the same frame fixes it for less money and less motor.

Published Duty Points

Rated flow, rated head, maximum head and motor power as Grundfos publishes them for the US 60 Hz build, at both rated speeds. These are the nominal figures, not a curve.

Reading these figures. Head is stated in feet; divide by 2.31 for psi, or multiply psi by 2.31 for feet. Elevation costs 0.433 psi per foot of lift. Every figure here is the nominal duty point โ€” for the flow and head at a specific point on the curve, request the manufacturer curve for the part number and we will send it.

Sizing a CRE

A pump curve plots what the pump adds to the pressure already at its inlet. Size on the boost required, never on the pressure wanted.

  1. Find the peak flow. For residential, count water supply fixture units and convert with the Hunter curve in IPC Table 604.3. For light commercial, use the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator. Guessing high here is the most expensive mistake in the exercise.
  2. Work out the required boost. Required boost = target pressure at the highest fixture + 0.433 psi per foot of elevation + friction loss through pipe, fittings and any treatment โˆ’ the inlet pressure you can count on at peak demand.
  3. Worked example. A four-storey building wants 45 psi at the top fixture, 42 ft above the pump. Friction through the riser and meter is 8 psi. The city main holds 35 psi at peak. Required boost = 45 + (42 ร— 0.433) + 8 โˆ’ 35 = 36.2 psi, which is 84 ft of head. At 30 GPM that lands inside CRE 5.
  4. Check the inlet, not just the outlet. On a tank fed by gravity the inlet contributes almost nothing and the curve is close to what you get. On a city main the standing pressure adds to whatever the pump produces, so the same pump gives a very different outlet pressure on the two systems.
  5. Check the setpoint against two ceilings. The sensor span is the range the controller can be told to hold, not a pressure the pump can reach. Confirm the pump produces the setpoint on top of your inlet pressure, and confirm the setpoint sits under the body rating for the connection you are buying โ€” 232 psi on the NPT builds, up to 362 psi on ANSI.
  6. Decide sensor or no sensor. Take a with-sensor part number if the pump is holding pressure on its own. Take a without-sensor part number only if a transmitter, a BMS or an external controller is already feeding it a signal.
  7. Confirm the electrical supply. Voltage and phase are fixed per part number on an MLE motor โ€” there is no terminal-board changeover as on a fixed-speed CR, and single-phase and three-phase units are not interchangeable.
The 70 percent rule. If the duty point sits above about 70 percent of a model's maximum head, step up to the next stack. It leaves room for pipe scaling, a dirty strainer and the day the inlet pressure sags, and it keeps the pump off the flat end of its curve where small pressure changes cause large flow swings.

What The MLE Motor Brings

The Drive Is On The Motor

The frequency converter is integrated into the motor terminal box rather than sitting in a separate panel. That removes the drive enclosure, its wall space and the motor cable run between them, and it removes the commissioning step where a generic drive has to be told what motor it is driving.

It Holds A Setpoint

With a pressure sensor fitted, the pump varies its own speed to keep the outlet at the pressure you set as demand moves. No throttling valve burning energy across a restriction, and no pressure swing at the fixture when a second outlet opens.

4000 rpm Is Real Extra Range

A two-pole induction motor is stuck near 3600 rpm on 60 Hz. An MLE motor is not, so Grundfos publishes a 4000 rpm build that lifts the same hydraulics further up the flow and head range โ€” CRE 3-2 moves from 15.5 GPM at 48 ft to 17.6 GPM at 62 ft.

On-Board Control Panel

Setpoint, operating mode and the running state are set and read at the motor itself through the control panel and function module, so a small system needs no external controller at all.

Soft Starting, Every Start

Ramping up under drive control instead of slamming across the line takes the mechanical shock off the coupling and the water-hammer shock off the pipework, which is what usually breaks fittings on a hard-started booster.

Two Connection Styles

Oval and NPT female rated PN 16, or ANSI 250 lb flanged rated PN 25. The connection changes the maximum operating pressure, so it is a specification decision rather than a plumbing preference, and each is a separate listing here.

Cartridge Seal

HQQE throughout this range: silicon carbide faces with EPDM rubber, in a cartridge that comes out as one piece. Nothing to set by hand on reassembly, which is where seal changes usually go wrong.

Where CR still wins. On a duty that genuinely runs flat out at one point โ€” a transfer pump that is either on or off โ€” a fixed-speed CR costs less to buy, has fewer electronics to fail and gives up nothing, because there is no varying demand for a drive to track. The CRE earns its premium where the flow actually moves. And where the liquid attacks 304, no amount of speed control helps: that is a CRNE question, not a CRE one.

The questions that come up most often on the phone about CRE selection.

What does the E in CRE actually add?

An MLE motor with the variable-speed drive built into it, and the control to use it. A CR is a fixed-speed pump: it runs at one speed and produces whatever pressure that speed gives at the flow being drawn. A CRE varies its own speed to hold a pressure you set. That removes the throttling valve, the separate drive panel and the wiring between them, because the drive is on the motor.

What is the difference between the 3600 rpm and 4000 rpm listings?

Rated speed, and therefore the duty point. An MLE motor is not limited to the 3600 rpm a two-pole induction motor turns on 60 Hz, so Grundfos publishes a second set of part numbers rated at 4000 rpm. The same CRE 3-2 gives 15.5 GPM at 48 ft at 3600 rpm and 17.6 GPM at 62 ft at 4000 rpm. They are different part numbers with different published curves, which is why they are separate listings rather than an option on one.

What does with sensor and without sensor mean?

Whether the pressure sensor and its cable ship with the pump. A with-sensor part number arrives ready to hold a pressure setpoint out of the box. A without-sensor part number is the same pump and the same drive, intended for a system that already has a transmitter, a building management system or an external controller feeding it a signal. Check which one your control scheme needs before ordering; the part numbers are not interchangeable.

Can I set any pressure within the sensor range?

Only up to what the pump can actually produce, and only up to what the body is rated for. The sensor span is the range the controller can be told to hold, not a pressure the pump can reach. A CRE 3-2 carries a 0-145 psi sensor but adds about 34 psi at shut-off, so the pump is the limit there. At the other end some CRE 10 spans reach 580 psi against a body rated 232 or 362 psi, so the body rating is the limit. The binding number is whichever is lower.

Do the oval and ANSI versions have the same pressure rating?

No. The oval and NPT female version is rated PN 16 and 232 psi maximum operating pressure. The ANSI 250 lb flanged version is rated PN 25, and 362 psi on most models. On the shorter CRE 10 stacks the ANSI version is 232 psi, so check the model, not just the connection style. Each listing states the rating for the connection it sells.

Is the pump curve the pressure I get at the tap?

No, and this is the most common misreading of a curve. A pump curve plots what the pump adds to the pressure already at its inlet. On a city main with 45 psi standing, a pump that adds 60 psi gives about 105 psi at the outlet, not 60. On a tank fed by gravity the inlet contributes almost nothing and the curve is close to what you get. Size on the boost required, not on the pressure wanted.

Will a bigger CRE give me more pressure at the fixture?

It gives more flow at the same pressure, which is usually what the problem actually is. If several outlets running together drop the pressure, the system is short of flow, and a larger frame at the same head fixes it. If one outlet alone is weak, more pressure is what is missing, and a taller stack in the same frame is the answer. Stepping up a frame to cure a pressure complaint is the usual mis-buy.

What voltages are available?

200-240 V single phase, 200-240 V three phase and 440-480 V three phase, fixed per part number. An MLE motor has no terminal-board changeover the way a fixed-speed CR motor does, so single-phase and three-phase units are not interchangeable and voltage cannot be reconfigured in the field. Confirm the supply before ordering.

What seals and materials do these use?

All of the part numbers in this range use the HQQE cartridge seal, with silicon carbide faces and EPDM rubber. Materials follow the CR family: CRE has a cast iron head and base with AISI 304 internals. Where you need all-304 or all-316 in the liquid path, the equivalents are CRIE and CRNE, which share the same MLE motor and control.
