Franklin Electric builds its FPS wastewater line for the two ways sewage is moved. A non-clog (solids-handling) pump passes the solids whole through an open impeller and moves large volumes through a 3 or 4 in force main: the job of a commercial or municipal lift station. A grinder pump cuts the solids into a slurry so it can push a small flow to a high head through a 1-1/4 in line: the job of a pressure sewer serving homes, lake communities and developments where gravity sewer is not practical. Around the pumps Franklin builds complete stations (the PowerSewer and fiberglass grinder packages), the control panels that run them, and the rail hardware and parts to service them.

Warranty

NC Series, IGP-A and IGP-M: 2 years from the date of original purchase by the consumer, per Franklin's owner manuals. PowerSewer V4PS: 3 years from original purchase. IGPH pumps, fiberglass packages, control panels and parts: 12 months from the date of purchase. Single-phase manual pumps must run from the matched FPS panel or capacitor kit to keep the warranty.

Reliability

NC pumps: tandem silicon carbide seals in an oil bath, a seal-fail probe, an adjustable wear plate and bearings rated for a B-10 life of 30,000 h (100,000 h on the 4NCH). Grinders: 440C stainless cutters making 414,000 cuts per minute, carbon/ceramic seal, on-winding thermal protection. Repair parts are listed by Franklin order number.

Fit

Grinder or non-clog is decided by flow and head. Grinders: up to about 40 GPM, heads to 175 ft, 1-1/4 in discharge. Non-clog: roughly 100 to 950 GPM at up to 110 ft, 3 or 4 in flange, solids to 3 in. Grinder pumps are 2 HP; NC pumps run 3 to 20 HP, and the 4NCH is three phase only.

Honest verdict. The A.Y. McDonald grinder wins on flow (44 GPM), on the 115V option and on a 1 HP size for lighter duty. The Franklin IGP-A wins where no panel is wanted, since it starts and switches itself. The Franklin IGPH wins on head: rated to 175 ft against 103 ft, which decides long or uphill pressure sewers.

Honest verdict. For a house, a small building or a septic effluent basin, the A.Y. McDonald sewage pumps and the Grundfos Unilift AP are the right tools: single-phase power, NPT discharge, a fraction of the price, and on the Grundfos an integral float. The Franklin NC Series wins everything above that: 100 to 950 GPM, solids passed whole at 2.5 to 3 in, flanged 3 or 4 in force mains, three-phase power to 575V and a seal-fail probe.

How to Size a Wastewater Pump

Every wastewater pump is sized on two numbers: the flow it must beat and the total dynamic head it must push against at that flow.

1. Peak inflow. The pump must move more than the highest flow arriving at the basin. Estimate it from the fixtures or units served, or from the design flow the engineer or local authority sets.

2. Total dynamic head (TDH). TDH = static lift (from the pump-off level to the highest point of the force main) + friction loss in the force main, check valve and fittings at the design flow. Convert a pressure to head at 2.31 ft per psi.

3. Grinder or non-clog. Read the TDH across the performance tables below. Grinders cover small flows at high heads; NC pumps cover large flows at lower heads. Then check solids, discharge size against the force main, and voltage.

4. Simplex or duplex. Most commercial lift stations run duplex, two pumps alternating lead and lag from a duplex panel, so one can be serviced while the other runs. A single home on a pressure sewer usually runs simplex with a high-level alarm.

Worked example, grinder. A house on a pressure sewer sits 50 ft below the high point of the force main, and friction adds 30 ft, so TDH = 80 ft. Franklin tabulates the IGP at 25 GPM at 80 ft: an IGP-A does the job. If the lot is 95 ft below the high point with the same friction, TDH = 125 ft, past the IGP's 120 ft rated point. The IGPH is tabulated at 24 GPM at 125 ft, so the high-head IGPH is the pick.
Worked example, lift station. A small commercial station must handle 300 GPM. Static lift is 15 ft and the force main loses 12 ft at 300 GPM, so TDH = 27 ft. The 3NC 184 mm trim gives 385 GPM at 20 ft and 270 GPM at 30 ft: at 27 ft it is barely enough. The 196 mm trim (5 HP, three phase) gives 470 and 355 GPM at the same heads, a comfortable margin. Run duplex, that is two 3NC 5 HP pumps and a duplex panel. We confirm the pick where the system curve crosses the pump curve.

What Makes FPS Wastewater Pumps Last

Dual SiC Seals, Seal-Fail Probe

NC pumps run tandem silicon carbide seals in an oil bath, and a probe in the seal chamber signals the panel when water gets past the lower seal, before it reaches the motor.

Adjustable Wear Plate

As the NC semi-open impeller and wear plate wear, flow drops. The field-adjustable wear plate closes the gap again without new parts.

IE3 Air-Filled 4NCH Motor

The 7.5 to 20 HP 4NCH runs an air-filled IE3 premium-efficiency motor with Class H insulation and an IP68 stator enclosure, with bearings rated for 100,000 h.

414,000 Cuts per Minute

IGP and IGPH grinders cut solids ahead of the impeller with through-hardened 440C stainless cutters, so the slurry passes a 1-1/4 in line without roping.

Dual-Stage High Head

The IGPH puts two brass impellers in series: 30 GPM at 100 ft where the single-stage IGP is down to 20 GPM, and rated to 175 ft.

Automatic or Manual

A models carry their start and run components in an oil-free chamber and switch on their own float. M models keep the start components in the panel, which suits duplex stations.

PowerSewer Dry Well

The PowerSewer puts the junction box in an OSHA-compliant dry well, hangs the pump on an isolated stainless support and lifts it out on a C-channel.

NEMA 4X Controls

Simplex and duplex grinder panels in NEMA 4X enclosures with Hand-Off-Auto switches and audible and visual high-water alarms; duplex panels alternate the pumps.

Manual grinders need the matched panel or the 520859 capacitor kit; single-phase NC pumps need an FPS panel or the 520851 starter kit. Panels take floats sold separately: three for simplex, four for duplex.

The questions contractors, developers and facility managers ask most.

Grinder pump or non-clog pump?

A grinder pump cuts solids to a slurry so it can push a small flow to a high head through a 1-1/4 in line, which suits a pressure sewer. A non-clog pump passes solids whole at a much higher flow through a 3 or 4 in force main, which suits a gravity-fed lift station. Franklin grinders move up to about 40 GPM; the NC Series up to 948 GPM.

IGP or IGPH grinder?

Franklin places the single-stage IGP below about 120 ft of total head. Above that, the dual-stage IGPH is rated to 175 ft with a 200 ft shut-off. The IGPHR version is rated only above about 100 ft.

What is the difference between A and M grinder models?

A models (IGP-A, IGPH-A) carry their start and run components inside the pump and, on the float builds, switch themselves on and off, so they need no control panel. M models (IGP-M, IGPH-M) keep the start components outside and run from a matched FPS control panel or capacitor kit.

Do I need a control panel?

Manual grinders and all NC pumps run from a control panel. Automatic IGP-A and IGPH-A pumps with a float do not need one, though Franklin recommends a high-water alarm wherever a stopped pump could cause flooding. Panels take floats sold separately.

Which NC pump: 3NC, 4NC or 4NCH?

Up to about 50 ft of head with a 3 in force main, the 3NC. The same duty with 3 in solids or a 4 in force main, the 4NC. Above about 50 ft of head or 550 GPM, the 4NCH, which is three phase only.

What warranty comes with these pumps?

Franklin warrants the NC Series and the IGP-A and IGP-M for 2 years from the date of original purchase by the consumer, and the PowerSewer V4PS for 3 years. IGPH pumps, packages, panels and parts carry 12 months from the date of purchase.

What is the PowerSewer?

Franklin's low-pressure sewer station: a monolithic HDPE basin 60 to 96 in deep with a dry well, isolated pump support, C-channel lift-out, anti-siphon check valve and NEMA 4X panel, sold with an IGP or IGPH grinder. It is an alternative to gravity sewer and septic tanks.

Can I replace an old positive displacement grinder?

Yes. The IGP retrofit kit is a drop-in simplex replacement with its own cover, check valve, alarm float and quick-disconnect plug. Match the plug to the basin wiring; adapter harnesses convert between the black and gray plugs.

Franklin, A.Y. McDonald or Grundfos?

For a house or small building, the A.Y. McDonald sewage pumps and Grundfos Unilift AP cost less and run on single-phase power. For grinder duty, the A.Y. McDonald grinder moves more flow while the Franklin IGPH reaches higher head. For a commercial lift station moving 100 to 950 GPM, the Franklin NC Series. We supply all three.

What should I send for a quote?

The peak inflow in GPM, the static lift, the force main length, size and material, your voltage and phase, and whether the station is simplex or duplex. For a replacement, the pump nameplate and a photo of the basin.
