Overview

The Grundfos solar surface pump system is designed for renewable energy supply. Powered by a solar panel, the system is especially suitable for supplying water in applications such as irrigation, watering of livestock, pressure boosting, floating pump installations and recirculation of swimming-pool water (OEM).

The CRFlex pump is available as a complete unit only, consisting of the MGFlex motor and a CR pump end. The MGFlex motor is a permanent magnet motor with integrated frequency converter, which enables the motor to run at high efficiency in a wide speed range: power input (P1) of 40 to 880 W and 60 to 1730 W, motor speed of 1000 to 3600 rpm, maximum input current of 4.6 A and 8.9 A, enclosure class TEFC / NEMA 3 (IP55).

The motor is suitable for both DC and AC voltage supply: 30-300 VDC, PE, or 1 x 90-240 VAC, -10 % / +6 %, 50/60 Hz, PE. As the integrated electronic unit handles both DC and AC supply voltages, it makes no difference how the wires + and - or N and L are connected. Thanks to the intelligent MGFlex motor, no further motor protection is required.

Genuine Grundfos equipment, factory-new in original packaging — sold and supported by Watermain Supply, an independent industrial supplier.
Performance — Will It Do What You Need?

Find your model, then the row for the head the pump has to add — lift plus elevation plus friction, shown in feet with the psi equivalent. Read across to the input power P1 your array delivers to the motor. The figure is gallons per minute at that duty point. The first column is the power at which the pump begins to deliver at that head; the last column is where Grundfos ends the published curve.

Figures are read from the vector curve data in the Grundfos solar surface pump data booklet 98619370, 60 Hz, 01/2020, figures 22 to 30, at round power values, with flow rounded down; the starts-pumping figure is rounded up to the next 10 W. A dash means the published curve does not cover that combination. The curves plot what the pump adds — total head — never a discharge pressure or a setpoint; psi is the equivalent of the head in feet. Input power P1 is the electrical power reaching the motor, which is lower than the nameplate rating of the solar array except in full sun. Grundfos curve conditions: all curves show mean values and must not be used as guarantee curves; typical deviation ±15 %; measured with water at 68 °F and a kinematic viscosity of 1 cSt; the QH curves include inlet and valve losses at actual speed. On CRF 1-17 Grundfos labels the 394 ft curve in metres (120 m). A thicker liquid reduces head and raises power consumption.

Every model takes either supply on the same terminals — solar DC or single-phase AC — and the motor finds the maximum power point itself on DC. In the type designation CRF 3-11, 3 is the CR pump size and 11 is the number of stages. Supplied as a complete pump with a 6.56 ft cable. Part numbers are as listed on the Grundfos 2026 renewables price list.

Key Features
  • Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) — the motor continuously optimizes the speed according to the input power available when connected to DC supply.
  • Wide voltage range — operates at any voltage from 30 to 300 VDC or 90 to 240 VAC.
  • Overvoltage and undervoltage protection — the motor stops if the voltage falls outside the permissible range and restarts when the voltage is back within it. No additional protection relay is required.
  • Overload protection — thermal protection against both steady overload and stalled condition to IEC 60034-11; the motor is stopped and restarted automatically.
  • Level switch straight to the motor — connected directly to the electronics box on the MGFlex motor, a level switch stops the pump when the water reservoir is full.
  • Advanced functional module FM 300 — three analog inputs, one analog output, two dedicated digital inputs, two configurable digital inputs or open-collector outputs, Grundfos Digital Sensor input and output, two Pt100/1000 inputs, LiqTec sensor inputs, two signal relay outputs and a GENIbus connection.
  • Solar, generator or grid — with the IO 101 switch box a backup generator takes over when it is started and the system returns to solar automatically when the generator stops or runs out of fuel.
  • Simple system — easy installation, few and simple components, maintenance confined to periodic cleaning of the solar panels.

System Configurations
System Components What it does
CRFlex Solar Pump, solar panels and support structure, IO 50 switch box, foot valve, optional dry-running switch The simplest system using solar energy for water transfer. The IO 50 switches the supply off by hand when no water is needed or for service
CRFlex Solar with level switch As above plus water reservoir and level switch Stores solar energy as water in a reservoir — for water at night, for short periods of insufficient solar energy, or as a backup source. The level switch stops the pump when the reservoir is full
CRFlex Solar with generator Pump, solar panels, IO 101 switch box, diesel or petrol generator Water during the night or in periods of insufficient solar energy. The IO 101 switches to generator operation when the generator is started and back to solar when it stops or runs out of fuel
CRFlex Solar with level switch and generator All of the above Reservoir storage with generator backup
CRFlex and SQFlex Solar SQFlex submersible with CU 200 control unit and level switch, reservoir, CRFlex with IO 50 The SQFlex pumps water from wells as small as 3 in into a reservoir; the CRFlex transfers water over a long distance or increases the water pressure

To calculate the number of solar panels required use the Grundfos sizing tools. The generator must be running steadily before the pump is cut in.

Switch boxes. The IO 50 enables manual starting and stopping of the pump in a solar-powered system and works as a connection box joining all necessary cables: maximum 300 VDC or 265 VAC, 8.9 A, IP55, 6 in x 4 in housing. The IO 101 adds connection of a backup generator: internal relay 230 VAC -15 % / +10 %, 50/60 Hz, maximum 225 VDC or 265 VAC, 8.9 A, IP55, 10.35 in x 7.83 in x 4.45 in. Both operate from -22 °F to 122 °F and are CE marked.

Suction Lift & Minimum Inlet Pressure

To avoid cavitation, make sure there is a minimum pressure on the suction side of the pump. Grundfos recommends calculating it when the liquid temperature is high, the flow is significantly higher than the rated flow, water is drawn from depths or through long pipes, or inlet conditions are poor. The maximum suction lift H in feet is:

H = pb - NPSHR - Hf - Hv - Hs

  • pb — barometric pressure in feet absolute; 33.9 ft at sea level. In closed systems it is the system pressure in feet
  • NPSHR — net positive suction head required in feet, read from the NPSHR curve at the highest flow the pump will be delivering
  • Hf — friction loss in the suction pipe in feet at that flow
  • Hv — vapor pressure in feet, which depends on the liquid temperature
  • Hs — safety margin, minimum 2.0 ft

If the calculated H is positive, the pump can operate at a suction lift of maximum H feet. If it is negative, an inlet pressure of minimum H feet is required. Never select a pump with a duty point too far to the right on the NPSH curve, and always check the NPSH value at the highest possible flow rate. The NPSHR curves for CR 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 are in the appendix of the Grundfos data booklet.

Control Connections — FM 300
Terminal Type Function
NC, C1, NO Signal relay 1 Normally closed, common, normally open — LIVE (mains voltages up to 250 VAC) or SELV
NC, C2, NO Signal relay 2 Normally closed, common, normally open — SELV only
2 DI1 Digital input, configurable. Factory-set as start / stop; open circuit results in stop
1 DI2 Digital input, configurable
10 DI3/OC1 Digital input / output, configurable. Open collector maximum 24 V resistive or inductive
11 DI4/OC2 Digital input / output, configurable. Open collector maximum 24 V resistive or inductive
4 AI1 Analog input: 0-20 mA / 4-20 mA, 0.5-3.5 V / 0-5 V / 0-10 V
7 AI2 Analog input: 0-20 mA / 4-20 mA, 0.5-3.5 V / 0-5 V / 0-10 V
14 AI3 Analog input: 0-20 mA / 4-20 mA, 0-10 V
12 AO Analog output: 0-20 mA / 4-20 mA, 0-10 V
17, 19 Pt100/1000 input 1 and 2 Pt100/1000 sensor inputs
21, 22 LiqTec sensor input 1 and 2 LiqTec sensor input — white and blue conductors; terminal 20 is ground for the brown and black conductors
24, 25 GDS RX, GDS TX Grundfos Digital Sensor input and output
A, Y, B GENIbus GENIbus A (+), GND, B (-)
5, 26 +5 V Supply to potentiometer and sensor
8, 15 +24 V Supply
3, 6, 9, 18, 20, 23 GND Ground

A jumper is factory-fitted between terminals 2 and 6. Remove it if digital input 1 is to be used as external start / stop or for any other external function — for example a level switch or dry-running switch. All inputs and outputs are separated from the mains-conducting parts by reinforced insulation and supplied by safety extra-low voltage. Wires to the different connection groups must be separated from each other by reinforced insulation in their entire lengths.

Before You OrderCRFlex is a surface pump and needs a flooded or short suction: keep the pump inlet less than 19.68 ft above the dynamic water level, fit a foot valve, and prime the pump before starting. Protect the pump and motor from rain and direct sunlight. Grundfos guarantees the performance and reliability of the MGFlex motor only when it is connected to the pump end as described in its documentation and assembled by Grundfos-trained persons — the CRFlex is supplied as a complete factory unit for that reason. Size the array to the input power in the table above, not to the panel nameplate. The part number is the complete pump with its cable only: solar modules, racking, switch box, foot valve, level and dry-running switches and pipework are separate items. A solar array is live whenever there is daylight, so isolate every DC and AC source before working on the pump. CRF 10-2 and CRF 15-1 ship by truck. Supplied for installation in the United States and shipped to U.S. addresses only.
