Description
The Smith-Blair Style 481 seals the plain end of a pipe for line testing or as a dependable dead end. It works like one end of a steel coupling: a carbon steel sleeve closed by a welded end plate, with a follower and Nitrile gasket that seal around the pipe as the bolts are drawn up, so no special pipe-end preparation is needed.
Every cap carries a 2 in female NPT outlet, offset for use as a low-point drain or blow-off, and the whole assembly is finished in Flexi-Coat fusion-bonded epoxy. Stock sizes run 2 to 20 in across steel, ductile iron and other pipe ODs; larger and unlisted sizes are built to order.
Application: sealing plain pipe ends for line testing, dead ends and temporary closures, 2 to 20 in.

Included: the epoxy-coated steel sleeve with welded end plate and 2 in FNPT outlet, follower, Nitrile gasket, and low-alloy steel bolts and nuts.
Thrust restraint: Thrust restraint is always required when the line is in use: the cap seals on the pipe but does not restrain it, so block or anchor it securely to keep it from moving off the pipe end.
On HDPE pipe: pipe stiffeners are required, ordered separately.

12-Month Smith-Blair Warranty
Smith-Blair warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment by Smith-Blair. Dated proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale, is required to establish eligibility. Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.
Working Pressure
150 PSI, the standard design rating; higher working-pressure designs are available to order.. The allowable pressure depends on pipe type, diameter and service conditions, and on the cap being restrained.

Installation Notes
- Thrust restraint is always required when the line is in use: the cap seals on the pipe but does not restrain it, so block or anchor it securely to keep it from moving off the pipe end.
- Clean the pipe end, slide the follower onto the pipe, lubricate the pipe and gasket with a soap-and-water solution that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements, and slide the gasket on with its beveled edge facing the pipe end.
- Push the cap over the pipe end to a stab depth of at least 3 in, then slide the gasket against the sleeve followed by the follower.
- Install the bolts, hand-tighten the nuts, then tighten gradually, alternating opposite sides so the follower stays parallel, to the torque in the instructions; recheck torque after the line is pressurized.
- Pipe stiffeners are required on polyethylene (PE) pipe.
