Description

The Smith-Blair Style 413 expanded-sleeve transition coupling joins plain-end pipe of the same nominal size but different ODs, from 14 to 48 in: the large end fits the ductile or cast iron pipe OD (15.30 in at 14 in nominal, up to 50.80 in at 48 in) and the small end the steel pipe OD (14.00 to 48.00 in). A 3/8 x 12 in fabricated steel sleeve, expanded at one end, carries steel followers and Nitrile gaskets, with anchor loops welded to the sleeve so each follower end is secured on its own, and Type 304 stainless steel bolts with coated nuts.

Choose the nominal size and large-end OD in the first option and the small-end OD in the second; order by the exact ODs of both pipes.

Application: joining steel pipe to ductile or cast iron pipe of the same nominal size, 14 to 48 in.

Key Features

  • Working pressure up to 150 PSI
  • Expanded sleeve takes the full steel-to-iron OD step at each size
  • Allows limited expansion and contraction and dampens vibration to reduce pipe fatigue
  • No special pipe-end preparation; deflects to change pipe direction without elbows or bends
  • Meets applicable AWWA C219; certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372
What Ships and What It Needs to Run

Included: the expanded steel sleeve with anchor loops, steel followers, Nitrile gaskets and Type 304 stainless bolts and fluoropolymer-coated nuts, ready to install.

Pipe stiffeners on HDPE, ordered separately. Smith-Blair requires pipe stiffeners when the coupling is used on polyethylene pipe; ask us to quote them with the coupling.

12-Month Smith-Blair Warranty

Smith-Blair warrants its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment by Smith-Blair. Dated proof of purchase, such as a bill of sale, is required to establish eligibility. Smith-Blair will repair or, at its option, replace a defective product; the product is returned to the factory or warehouse Smith-Blair designates.

Working Pressure

Up to 150 PSI, the standard design rating. Smith-Blair notes that a coupling's working pressure depends on pipe type and diameter, sleeve thickness and material, gasket cross section, follower type and number of bolts; higher-pressure designs are built to order.

Materials Specifications
Sleeve Carbon steel, ASTM A283C, 3/8 x 12 in, expanded; larger sleeves carry hanging rings
Anchor loops Carbon steel, ASTM A36, welded to the sleeve to secure each follower end independently
Followers Carbon steel C1020 (ASTM A576), integral bolt-head pocket for one-wrench installation
Bolts and nuts Type 304 stainless steel 5/8-11 UNC bolts with fluoropolymer-coated nuts to prevent galling
Gasket Nitrile (Buna-N) per ASTM D2000, NSF 61, with molded-in sealing ribs for textured ductile iron and AC pipe; resists water, oil, acids, alkalies and most (aliphatic) hydrocarbons; -20°F to +180°F
Finish Flexi-Coat fusion-bonded epoxy (meets AWWA C213)

Materials subject to change by the manufacturer.

Pipe Applications

Steel pipe at one end and ductile or cast iron pipe at the other; the 413 also serves stainless steel, asbestos cement and PVC pipe of matching OD. HDPE requires pipe stiffeners.

Installation Notes
  • Pipe stiffeners are required when the coupling is used on polyethylene (HDPE) pipe.
  • Clean the pipe ends, then slide a follower onto each pipe, followed by a gasket with its beveled edge facing the pipe end; lubricate the pipe and gaskets with a soap-and-water solution that meets the water and pipe supplier's requirements.
  • Center the pipe gap in the sleeve: with the 12 in sleeve aim for 1 in on a straight run and no more than 6 in (sleeve length less 6 in).
  • Hand-tighten the nuts, then tighten gradually, alternating between opposite sides so the followers stay parallel, to the torque in the instructions; recheck torque after the line is pressurized.
  • Allowable axial pipe movement per coupling is 1/8 in through 2 in nominal, 1/4 in over 2 to 10 in, and 3/8 in above 10 in.
  • Anchor the pipe: the coupling seals around it, and Smith-Blair requires proper anchoring to restrain pipe movement and prevent pull-out.
