A non-clog pump, also called a solids-handling pump, is a submersible sewage pump that passes the solids whole through an open impeller rather than grinding them, so it can move large volumes of raw wastewater through a flanged force main. Franklin Electric builds the FPS NC Series in three families. The 3NC and 4NC are 3 and 5 HP pumps with oil-filled motors in single or three phase; the 4NCH steps up to 7.5–20 HP on an air-filled IE3 premium-efficiency motor for higher heads. All three are built for raw, unscreened domestic sewage, effluent, irrigation and general dewatering in commercial and industrial service — lift stations for schools, strip centers, apartment complexes, RV parks, campgrounds, plants and small municipal systems.
We supply the full U.S. 60 Hz NC range, from 230V single phase to 575V three phase, plus the base elbows, lift-out kits, starter kit and repair parts. Our engineering-led selection matches the impeller trim or horsepower to your peak inflow and total dynamic head against the Franklin curve — call 1-888.510.4036 or email sales@watermainsupply.com. Genuine Franklin Electric equipment, factory-new in original packaging — sold and supported by Watermain Supply, an independent industrial supplier.
Will It Work for Me?

Quick rule. Up to about 50 ft of total head and a 3 in force main: 3NC. Same duty but 3 in solids or a 4 in force main: 4NC. More than about 50 ft of head, more than about 550 GPM, or a long uphill force main: 4NCH. On single-phase power only the 3NC and 4NC apply.
Non-Clog Pump Performance
Franklin tabulated points only, in GPM at total dynamic head (static lift plus friction in the force main). A dash means no rated flow at that head; shut-off is the head at zero flow.

Honest verdict. These pumps overlap less than their labels suggest. For a house, a small building or a septic effluent basin, the A.Y. McDonald sewage pumps and the Grundfos Unilift AP are the right tools: single-phase power, NPT discharge, a fraction of the price, and on the Grundfos an integral float so no panel is needed. For a pressure sewer, where a small, long force main runs uphill, the A.Y. McDonald grinder pump wins: it macerates the solids and pushes 44 GPM to 103 ft through a 1-1/4 in line. The Franklin NC Series wins everything above that: commercial and industrial lift stations that need 100 to 950 GPM, solids passed whole at 2.5 to 3 in, flanged 3 or 4 in force mains, three-phase power up to 575V, and a seal-fail probe that flags a leaking seal before the motor fails.
Which Wastewater Pump Do You Need?
Start from the job. We confirm the final model against the published curve before you order.
A lift station pump is sized on two numbers: the flow it must beat and the total dynamic head it must push against at that flow.
1. Peak inflow. The pump must move more than the highest flow arriving at the wet well. Estimate it from the fixtures or units served, or from the design flow the engineer or local authority sets for the site.
2. Total dynamic head (TDH). TDH = static lift (from the pump-off level to the highest point of the force main or the discharge) + friction loss in the force main, check valve and fittings at the design flow. Convert a pressure requirement to head at 2.31 ft per psi.
3. Pick the trim or horsepower. Read the TDH across the performance table and choose the smallest 3NC or 4NC trim, or 4NCH horsepower, that delivers more than the peak inflow there. Then check the solids, the discharge size against the force main, and the voltage.
4. Plan for two pumps. Most commercial lift stations run duplex, with two pumps alternating lead and lag from a duplex control panel so one can be serviced while the other runs.
Worked example. A small commercial lift station must handle a peak inflow of 300 GPM. The static lift is 15 ft and the force main loses 12 ft to friction at 300 GPM, so TDH = 15 + 12 = 27 ft. On the 3NC table, the 184 mm trim gives 385 GPM at 20 ft and 270 GPM at 30 ft, about 305 GPM at 27 ft — barely enough, with no margin. The 196 mm trim (5 HP, three phase) gives about 390 GPM at 27 ft, a comfortable margin. If the site wants 3 in solids or a 4 in force main, the 4NC 182 mm trim gives about 345 GPM at 27 ft. Run as a duplex, that is two 3NC-5 HP pumps and a duplex panel. We confirm the final pick where the system curve crosses the pump curve.

Installation, Controls & Repair Parts
What goes in the wet well with the pump, and what keeps it running.
Control Panel
NC pumps run from a control panel with the starter and overload protection. Single-phase 3NC and 4NC need an FPS control panel or the NC-CK starter kit (520851). Use a panel with seal-fail circuitry to read the probe; duplex panels alternate lead and lag.
Lift-Out Rail Mounting
Base elbows let the pump be lifted out on a rail without entering the wet well: 3 in single-rail base elbow, flanged (87109916-00) or NPT (87109788-00), or bolt-on elbow (87109789-00). For 4 in pumps: base elbow FPSBEA400 (115930104), lift-out flange FPSPF400 (115930128) and lift-out kit FPSPK400 (115930131).
Dual SiC Seals and Seal-Fail Probe
Tandem silicon carbide seals, upper and lower, run in an oil bath with 300-series stainless hardware and NBR elastomers. A probe in the seal chamber signals the panel when water gets past the lower seal.
Adjustable Wear Plate
As the semi-open impeller and wear plate wear, the gap opens and flow drops. The field-adjustable wear plate closes the gap again, restoring performance without new parts.
Built to Be Rebuilt
Impellers by trim, seals, bearings, stators, rotors, cover assemblies and wear plates for the 3NC and 4NC are on our NC repair parts listing — 41 order numbers. 4NCH repair kits are available by horsepower on request.

Non-Clog Pump FAQ
The questions contractors and facility managers ask most.
What is a non-clog pump?
A non-clog, or solids-handling, pump is a submersible sewage pump with an open impeller and large passages that move raw wastewater with the solids intact. The Franklin FPS 3NC passes spherical solids up to 2.5 in, and the 4NC and 4NCH up to 3 in.
Which do I need: 3NC, 4NC or 4NCH?
Up to about 50 ft of head with a 3 in force main, the 3NC. The same duty with 3 in solids or a 4 in force main, the 4NC. Above about 50 ft of head or 550 GPM, or on a long uphill force main, the 4NCH, which is three phase only.
Non-clog or grinder pump?
A grinder pump macerates solids so it can push a small flow to a high head through a small pipe, which suits a pressure sewer. A non-clog pump passes solids whole at a much higher flow through a 3 or 4 in force main, which suits a gravity-fed lift station. The A.Y. McDonald grinder moves up to 44 GPM to 103 ft; the Franklin NC moves up to 948 GPM.
Do NC pumps need a control panel?
Yes. The pump runs from a control panel with the starter and overload protection. Single-phase 3NC and 4NC pumps need an FPS control panel or the 520851 starter kit for proper operation and warranty, and the seal-fail probe needs a panel with seal-fail circuitry.
Can I run a Franklin non-clog pump on single-phase power?
The 3NC and 4NC come in 230V single phase at 3 and 5 HP. The 4NCH is three phase only, in 208-230V or 460V. Three-phase 3NC and 4NC models are also available at 200/230V, 460V and 575V.
What warranty comes with the NC Series?
Franklin warrants the NC Series for 2 years from the date of original purchase by the consumer, per the owner’s manual. Single-phase models must run from an FPS control panel or starter kit to keep that warranty.
Franklin NC, A.Y. McDonald or Grundfos?
For a home, a small building or a septic basin, the A.Y. McDonald sewage pumps and Grundfos Unilift AP cost far less and run on single-phase power; the Grundfos has a built-in float. For a commercial or industrial lift station moving 100 to 950 GPM through a flanged force main, choose the Franklin NC Series. We supply all three.
Can the pump be lifted out on rails?
Yes. Franklin offers 3 in base elbows for the 3NC, and a 4 in base elbow, lift-out flange and lift-out kit for the 4NC and 4NCH, so the pump can be pulled for service without entering the wet well.
Can a worn NC pump be rebuilt?
Yes. Seals, impellers, bearings, stators, wear plates and cover assemblies for the 3NC and 4NC are listed by Franklin order number, and the adjustable wear plate restores lost flow as parts wear. 4NCH repair kits are available by horsepower.
What should I send for a quote?
The peak inflow in GPM, the static lift, the force main length, size and material, the solids expected, your voltage and phase, and whether the station is simplex or duplex. For a replacement, the pump nameplate and a photo of the wet well.
Sizing a Lift Station? Let’s Spec It.
Send the peak inflow, static lift and force main details. We return the matched Franklin NC pump, trim and rail hardware — or tell you if an A.Y. McDonald or Grundfos pump fits the job better.
