Grundfos builds the CR platform in three material grades, and CRN is the 316 one. The difference between 304 and 316 is molybdenum, and molybdenum is what resists chloride pitting. That single element is why a softened supply, a coastal site or an RO permeate line will eat a 304 pump and leave a 316 one alone. Everything else β chambers, impellers, hydraulics, footprint β is shared with CR and CRI, so specifying CRN is a materials decision and not a performance one.
We supply the U.S. 60 Hz CRN range β CRN 3, CRN 5 and CRN 10 β in Victaulic grooved and ANSI 300 lb flanged construction, single phase and three phase, with HQQE or HQQV cartridge seals. Every part number is a complete pump with motor, coupling and coupling guard. The deciding axis is rated flow, highlighted below. Unlike CRI, the pressure rating does not change with frame size.

Where two figures are shown, the first is the single-phase motor and the second the three-phase β the two run at slightly different rated speeds, so the duty point moves by a few percent. Boost in psi equals head in feet multiplied by 0.433. Figures are the published rated duty points; for a duty between two models, or for flows away from the rated point, request the Grundfos curve for the exact model. Confirm against the current Grundfos 60 Hz data booklet before specifying.
How we size a CRN, and what to check before it goes in.
Required boost = target pressure at the highest fixture + 0.433 psi per foot of elevation + friction loss β inlet pressure. A four-storey building needing 45 psi at the top fixture, 40 ft above the pump, with 8 psi of friction and 30 psi at the inlet, needs 45 + 17.3 + 8 β 30 = 40.3 psi of boost, which is 93 ft of head. On a closed loop there is no static lift to overcome, so the calculation is friction loss around the loop only.
For residential and multi-unit, convert fixture units with WSFU and Hunterβs curve (IPC Table 604.3). For light commercial, the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator gives a more realistic peak. For treatment and process duty, take the flow from the skid or process schedule rather than estimating it. CRN 3 at 15.4 GPM, CRN 5 at 30.4 GPM and CRN 10 at 53.3 GPM cover most treatment-plant and small commercial duties.
Chloride concentration, temperature and pH act together, so no single chloride figure decides whether 316 holds. Hot chloride-bearing water is far harder on stainless than the same water cold. Send the liquid analysis with the duty and we will confirm the grade; where 316 will not hold, the same hydraulics are built in titanium as the CRT range. Going the other way, if the liquid is ordinary potable water, glycol or clean deionised water, CRI in 304 is the cheaper pump and does the same job.
HQQE (EPDM) reaches 248 degrees F and handles potable water, hot water and glycol; mineral oils need HQQV. HQQV (FKM) is limited to 194 degrees F and is the choice for oils, fuels and liquids that attack EPDM. On an aggressive liquid the elastomer decides the fit as much as the stainless grade does β a 316 pump with the wrong rubber still fails.
Multistage pumps are sensitive to available suction head. Confirm NPSH available at the design flow against NPSH required from the curve for the exact model, with margin, particularly on hot water and on any suction lift.
Neither CRN connection style ships with its mating hardware. Grundfos states in the price book that for pumps with ANSI flanges or Victaulic couplings, companion connections are ordered separately. Put the couplings and gaskets, or the companion flanges, bolts and gaskets, on the same order as the pump.

Recommendations are a starting point from the rated duty points on this page, not a substitute for sizing against the curve at your actual duty and confirming the material against your water analysis.
The CR platform in its highest standard material grade.
Head, base, chambers, impellers, shaft and sleeves are AISI 316 (EN 1.4401). Not a 316 wetted kit on a 304 pump β the whole liquid end.
316 differs from 304 by the molybdenum in it, and that is specifically what resists chloride pitting. It is the reason to pay for this grade, and the only reason.
Hydraulics are shared across the platform, so a CRN 5-8 lands on the same duty point as a CR 5-8. You can change material grade late in a project without re-sizing.
All three frames are rated 362 psi. Stepping up a frame for flow does not cost you pressure ceiling β which is not true of every range in the platform.
Suction and discharge share a centreline at the same height, so the pump drops into a straight run with no offset, no elbow and no baseplate.
Replaced as a complete cartridge without dismantling the pump, setting faces by hand, or special tools.
Both seal faces are silicon carbide in every option here, not carbon β which is what lets the same seal handle hot water and aggressive liquids.
Listed for drinking water contact across the range, backed by the all-stainless wetted path rather than a coating.

Hydraulics are shared across the CR, CRI and CRN grades, so the rated duty point does not change with grade β only the materials and the price. We checked every model in this range against its CR and CRI sibling and the rated flow and head match on all of them. CR, CRI, CRT and the E-pump ranges are quoted on request.
CRN needs clean, thin, non-aggressive liquid without solids or fibres β βnon-aggressiveβ being relative to 316, not absolute. For wastewater or solids-bearing liquid it is the wrong machine and we will quote a submersible or solids-handling pump instead. For a single-stage duty at low head, a close-coupled end suction pump is cheaper and simpler. And if your water is ordinary potable supply with no chloride problem, CRI or even CR will do the same duty for less β 316 earns its cost only when the liquid demands it. Tell us the liquid and the duty and we will quote what fits, whether or not it is a Grundfos.

We will tell you when CR in cast iron or CRI in 304 is enough. Specifying up a grade you do not need is money spent for nothing.
60 Hz hydraulics, NEMA C-face motors and the voltage and phase your service actually has. The 50 Hz metric equivalents look identical on paper and will not perform to the same curve.
Send the flow, head, liquid and temperature and we size against the published curve, and quote the companion connections in the same breath so the job is not held up.
If CRN is not the right fit, we will say so and quote the one that is β including pumps from other manufacturers.

The questions that come up most often on the phone about CRN selection.
The material grade, and only that. CR has a cast iron pump head and base with AISI 304 internals. CRI is AISI 304 throughout. CRN is AISI 316 throughout. The hydraulics are shared across all three, so a CRN 5-8, a CRI 5-8 and a CR 5-8 land on the same rated duty point. We checked every model in this range against its CR and CRI siblings and the rated flow and head match on all of them.
When chlorides are present. The molybdenum in AISI 316 is what resists chloride pitting, and 304 does not have it. Softened water, brackish or coastal supplies, RO permeate, many process liquids and most chemical dosing duties are the cases that justify it. On ordinary potable water, deionised water or a clean HVAC loop, CRI in 304 does the same hydraulic job for less.
Yes. All three are rated to 362 psi maximum operating pressure. That is worth knowing if you have specified CRI before, where the CRI 10 frame drops to 232 psi while CRI 3 and CRI 5 hold 362. On CRN there is no such step down, so moving up a frame for flow does not cost you pressure ceiling.
Victaulic grooved or ANSI 300 lb flanged. The grooved connection is rated PN 50 and the ANSI flange PN 25, but the pump body rating of 362 psi is the binding figure on both. Port size is the same on either style within a frame.
No, and this catches people out. Grundfos states in the price book that for pumps with ANSI flanges or Victaulic couplings, companion connections are ordered separately. That applies to both CRN styles: Victaulic couplings and gaskets for the grooved version, companion flanges, bolts and gaskets for the ANSI version. Order them with the pump.
The ANSI flanged version uses a cast iron flange and base plate. Grundfos states that neither comes into contact with the pumped liquid, so the wetted path stays all 316. If your specification excludes cast iron from the pump entirely, tell us and we will confirm the build or quote the Victaulic version instead.
Because Grundfos publishes a slightly different duty point for the single-phase and three-phase versions of the same model. The two motors have different rated speeds, so the point moves by a few percent. Where the table shows two figures, the first is single phase and the second is three phase. Where it shows one, the two agree or only one is offered.
The final letter is the rubber. HQQE uses EPDM, rated minus 4 to 248 degrees F, and is the standard water seal for potable water, hot water and glycol. HQQV uses FKM, rated minus 4 to 194 degrees F, for mineral oils, fuels and liquids that attack EPDM. Both use silicon carbide faces. On an aggressive liquid the elastomer decides the fit as much as the stainless grade does.
Yes. The CRN range carries NSF/ANSI 61 certification for drinking water contact, and the head, base, chambers, impellers, shaft and sleeves are all AISI 316.
