Grundfos builds the CR platform in three material grades, and CRI is the all-stainless one. Where CR uses a cast iron pump head and base with stainless internals, CRI is AISI 304 from the base plate up, so the liquid never meets cast iron. The hydraulics are identical to CR — same chambers, same impellers, same duty points — which means choosing CRI is a materials decision, not a performance one.
We supply the U.S. 60 Hz CRI range — CRI 3, CRI 5 and CRI 10 — in FlexiClamp and ANSI 300 lb flanged construction, single phase and three phase, with HQQE or HQQV cartridge seals. Boost in psi equals head in feet multiplied by 0.433. Figures are the published rated duty points; for a duty between two models, or for flows away from the rated point, request the Grundfos curve for the exact model. Confirm against the current Grundfos 60 Hz data booklet before specifying.
How we size a CRI, and what to check before it goes in.
Required boost = target pressure at the highest fixture + 0.433 psi per foot of elevation + friction loss − inlet pressure. A four-storey building needing 45 psi at the top fixture, 40 ft above the pump, with 8 psi of friction and 30 psi at the inlet, needs 45 + 17.3 + 8 − 30 = 40.3 psi of boost, which is 93 ft of head. On a closed loop there is no static lift to overcome, so the calculation is friction loss around the loop only.
For residential and multi-unit, convert fixture units with WSFU and Hunter’s curve (IPC Table 604.3). For light commercial, the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator gives a more realistic peak. For treatment and process duty, take the flow from the skid or process schedule rather than estimating it. CRI 3 at 15.4 GPM, CRI 5 at 30.4 GPM and CRI 10 at 53.3 GPM cover most treatment-plant and small commercial duties.
CRI 3 and CRI 5 are rated to 362 psi maximum operating pressure; CRI 10 is rated to 232 psi. That figure has to cover inlet pressure plus pump head, not just pump head. A CRI 10 on a boosted inlet can reach its ceiling well before the taller CRI 5 does.
HQQE (EPDM) reaches 248 degrees F and handles potable water, hot water and glycol but not mineral oils. HQQV (FKM) is limited to 194 degrees F and is the choice for oils, fuels and liquids that attack EPDM. On deionised water the seal matters as much as the pump material.
Multistage pumps are sensitive to available suction head. Confirm NPSH available at the design flow against NPSH required from the curve for the exact model, with margin, particularly on hot water and on any suction lift.

Recommendations are a starting point from the rated duty points on this page, not a substitute for sizing against the curve at your actual duty.
The CR platform, with the cast iron taken out of the liquid path.
Head, base, chambers, impellers, shaft and sleeves are AISI 304. On a CR the liquid meets a cast iron head; on a CRI it never does. That is the whole reason to specify it.
Hydraulics are shared across the platform, so a CRI 5-8 and a CR 5-8 land on the same duty point. You can swap material grade late in a project without re-sizing.
Suction and discharge share a centreline at the same height, so the pump drops into a straight run with no offset, no elbow and no baseplate.
More head comes from adding chambers, not from a bigger casing. The footprint barely changes between a 2-stage and a 10-stage pump.
Replaced as a complete cartridge without dismantling the pump, setting faces by hand, or special tools.
Both seal faces are silicon carbide in every option here, not carbon — which is what lets the same seal handle hot water and low-conductivity liquids.
Listed for drinking water contact across the range, backed by the all-stainless wetted path rather than a coating.
Standard 56C to 254TC frames, single and three phase. Replacement motors are a stock item from any motor supplier, not a proprietary part.
We sell every major line, so we can be straight about fit. If CRI is more pump than your liquid needs, we will say so.

Hydraulics are shared across all of them, so the rated duty point does not change with grade — only the materials and the price. CR, CRN and the E-pump ranges are quoted on request.
CRI needs clean, thin, non-aggressive liquid without solids or fibres. For wastewater or solids-bearing liquid it is the wrong machine and we will quote a submersible or solids-handling pump instead. For a single-stage duty at low head, a close-coupled end suction pump is cheaper and simpler. And if your liquid is ordinary potable water, CR in cast iron will do the same job for less — the stainless head earns its cost only when the liquid demands it. Tell us the liquid and the duty and we will quote what fits, whether or not it is a Grundfos.

We will tell you when CR in cast iron is enough and when the liquid genuinely needs 304 or 316. Specifying up a grade you do not need is money spent for nothing.
60 Hz hydraulics, NEMA C-face motors and the voltage and phase your service actually has. The 50 Hz metric equivalents look identical on paper and will not perform to the same curve.
Send the flow, head, liquid and temperature and we size against the published curve, including the pressure ceiling that differs between CRI frames.

The questions that come up most often on the phone about CRI selection.
The materials. CR has a cast iron pump head and base with AISI 304 wetted parts. CRI is AISI 304 throughout, head and base included, so no cast iron touches the liquid. The hydraulics are shared, so a CRI 5-8 and a CR 5-8 have the same rated duty point.
Whenever iron pick-up matters. Deionised and demineralised water, reverse osmosis permeate, wash-down and hygiene-sensitive process duty all attack or are contaminated by a cast iron head. For ordinary potable water, glycol and HVAC service, CR does the same job for less.
It is the nominal duty in cubic metres per hour, not gallons per minute. At 60 Hz the rated flows are 15.4 GPM for CRI 3, 30.4 GPM for CRI 5 and 53.3 GPM for CRI 10. Size from the rated head table on this page, never from the family number.
CRI 3 and CRI 5 are rated to 362 psi maximum operating pressure. CRI 10 is rated to 232 psi. The larger hydraulic section sets the limit, so a bigger pump does not mean a higher pressure rating. Check it against inlet pressure plus pump head before specifying.
FlexiClamp or ANSI 300 lb flanged, and on CRI both carry the same port size and the same pressure rating within a family. Companion flanges are not included with the ANSI version and are ordered separately.
The ANSI flanged version uses a cast iron flange and base plate. Grundfos states that neither comes into contact with the pumped liquid, so the wetted path remains all stainless. If you need no cast iron on the pump at all, say so when you order and we will confirm the build.
The final letter is the rubber. HQQE uses EPDM and is the standard water seal, rated minus 4 to 248 degrees F, suitable for potable water, hot water and glycol but not mineral oils. HQQV uses FKM and is rated minus 4 to 194 degrees F, for mineral oils, fuels and liquids that attack EPDM. Both use silicon carbide faces.
