What NSF 61 & 372 Actually Mean

NSF/ANSI 61 certifies that materials in contact with drinking water do not leach harmful contaminants. NSF/ANSI 372 certifies lead-free construction — a weighted-average lead content at or below 0.25% across wetted surfaces, as required by the US Safe Drinking Water Act and Canadian regulation. Any pump serving a home's potable water should carry both. Both brands in this collection do.

Find Your Match

Pick Your Application

Jet pumps are sized to well depth, flow demand, and casing diameter. Match your situation below to narrow the right family — then call us at 281.664.8000 for a free pump & ejector pairing.

🪣 Shallow Well (≤ 25 ft)
Hand-dug or driven wells, cisterns, lake/stream intakes. Pump sits above water, draws via suction lift only. No down-hole equipment.
→ Baker 8100 / 8300 E-Series / 8500
🚰 Deep Well 2" Casing (25–80 ft)
Driven point wells with 2-inch casing, common on rural property. Single-pipe ejector with foot valve. Convertible jet pump on surface.
→ Baker 8200 / 8600 / 8000 + 2" ejector
🏞️ Deep Well 4" Casing (80–150 ft)
Drilled wells with 4-inch casing. Twin-pipe ejector down-hole. Best efficiency at depth without going to a submersible.
→ Baker 8000 / 8200 / 8600 + 4" ejector
🌊 Lake / Stream / Pond
Drawing from surface water for irrigation, livestock, or cabin supply. Foot valve at intake, surface-mounted shallow well pump.
→ Baker 8100 / 8500 + foot valve
🚜 Farm / Irrigation
Higher flow, longer runs, irrigation duty. Multi-stage jet provides higher pressure than single-stage at lower HP.
→ Baker 1500 / 1500XSW multi-stage
🏡 Cabin / Cottage
Seasonal use, modest demand, easy winterization. ½ HP shallow well or convertible based on water source.
→ Baker 8100 ½ HP / 8200 ½ HP

Shallow Well vs Convertible vs Multi-Stage

Three jet pump families serve three different water sources. Get this right and the rest of the sizing falls into place.

Shallow
Suction Lift Only · ≤ 25 ft
Most Common
How it works: Pump above water draws via suction. Built-in venturi nozzle creates the jet action.
Max lift: ~25 ft (atmospheric pressure limits suction)
Down-hole hardware: None — just foot valve at intake
Best for: Driven points ≤ 25 ft, cisterns, lakes, streams, ponds
Baker series: 8100, 8300 E-Series, 8500
Convertible
Shallow OR Deep · 25–150 ft
Versatile
How it works: Same pump runs as shallow well OR pairs with down-hole ejector for deep well
Shallow mode: Up to 25 ft, no extra hardware
Deep mode: Add 2" or 4" ejector package, twin pipes down well
Best for: Unknown future depth, properties with multiple wells, retrofit installs
Baker series: 8000, 8200, 8600
Multi-Stage
High Pressure · Irrigation Duty
Workhorse
How it works: Multiple impellers in series build higher pressure than single-stage
Pressure: Higher PSI without higher HP — efficient at irrigation pressures
Operation: No regulating valve needed — runs continuous duty
Best for: Sprinkler irrigation, water transfer, light commercial boosting
Baker series: 1500, 1500XSW
Why 25 Feet is the Magic Number

Atmospheric pressure at sea level (14.7 PSI) can theoretically lift water 33.9 feet — but in practice, pump efficiency, friction, fittings, and altitude knock that down to ~25 feet maximum suction lift. Push past 25 ft and you'll cavitate, lose prime, or just never pull water. That's why deep wells need a down-hole ejector: it pushes water UP, instead of asking the pump to suck it up.

Shallow Well Series · ≤ 25 ft Lift

Baker 8100 · 8300 E-Series · 8500

Three shallow well families covering every motor flange standard and impeller preference. All designed for direct suction lift up to 25 feet from driven points, cisterns, and surface water.

8100 Series — NEMA J Threaded-Shaft · The Workhorse

The original Baker shallow well jet pump and the most widely sold residential shallow well pump in the lineup. NEMA J threaded-shaft motors in ½ HP, ¾ HP, and 1 HP. Two configurations: high-capacity (more GPM, lower PSI) and high-pressure (less GPM, higher PSI). Choose between dynamically balanced brass impellers (premium, longest life, higher cost) or engineered thermoplastic impellers (corrosion-proof, lower cost).

HP: ½ – 1 HPFlow: up to 25 GPMPressure: up to 80 PSIMotor: NEMA J threadedImpeller: Brass or Plastic
High-Capacity vs High-Pressure

High-Capacity = more GPM, lower max PSI — best for households with simultaneous demand (multiple bathrooms, dishwasher + laundry). High-Pressure = lower GPM, higher max PSI — best for single-zone irrigation, long pipe runs, or 2-story homes where elevation lift matters more than peak flow.

8300 E-Series — Modern Platform · ½ – 1½ HP

The same modern Baker 8000-platform engineering in a dedicated shallow well configuration. Up to 32 GPM and 80 PSI, available from ½ HP through 1½ HP. Easy field-switchable 115V/230V voltage. The right choice when you need more flow than the 8100 can deliver but don't need convertible deep-well capability.

8500 Series — Square Flange Motor · NEMA C Compatible

Same performance as the 8100 but with NEMA C square flange motor compatibility — the right choice when local stock or replacement specs require a square flange instead of NEMA J threaded shaft. Same brass or plastic impeller options, same high-capacity vs high-pressure split, same ½–1 HP range.

Convertible Series · Shallow OR Deep

Baker 8000 · 8200 · 8600

Convertible jets are the smartest choice when you don't yet know the well depth, when you're retrofitting a property with mixed water sources, or when you want one pump that can serve a shallow surface application now and convert to deep well operation later. All three series accept Baker's 2" and 4" ejector packages.

8000 Series — Modern Convertible · ½ – 1½ HP · 150 ft Capable

Baker's most capable convertible. Built on the modern 8000 platform with a robust all-iron housing, 304 stainless steel motor shaft, stainless steel wear ring, and a plastic impeller with stainless steel insert (best of both worlds — corrosion-proof plastic body with metal-to-metal stress points). Delivers up to 46 GPM in shallow well mode and reaches depths of 150 feet with the appropriate ejector package.

HP: ½ – 1½ HPShallow flow: up to 46 GPMDeep depth: 150 ft maxShaft: 304 SSWear Ring: SS
Why the 8000 is Worth the Premium

The 304 SS shaft eliminates the corrosion path between motor and pump end — the most common failure point on older convertible jets. The SS wear ring stays dimensionally stable in hard-water and sediment-laden conditions. The plastic-with-SS-insert impeller resists chemical attack while keeping balance integrity. If your well water has any iron, sulfur, or hardness issues, the 8000 series is the right choice.

8200 Series — NEMA J Convertible · ½ – 1 HP · 120 ft

Convertible cousin to the 8100 shallow well. NEMA J threaded-shaft motor platform, ½ HP through 1 HP. Push up to 65 GPM in shallow well mode and reach depths to 120 feet with the appropriate deep well ejector. Best fit when you want classic NEMA J motor compatibility with deep-well versatility.

8600 Series — Square Flange Convertible · ½ – 1 HP

Mirror of the 8200 with NEMA C square flange motor. Same shallow well + ejector deep well capability, same ½ HP through 1 HP range, same brass and plastic impeller options. The right choice when local replacement specs or stocked motors are square flange. Up to 65 GPM shallow / 120 ft deep.

⚠ Critical: Match Your Ejector to Your Casing & Depth

A convertible jet pump alone won't pump from depth. You need (1) the pump on the surface, (2) the matching ejector package down-hole, and (3) twin pipes (drive + return) reaching the ejector. Order the wrong ejector for your casing diameter (2" vs 4") or pump model and the system won't work. Always confirm pump model + casing ID + total depth + static water level before ordering. Call us at 281.664.8000 with these four numbers and we'll match the right ejector first time.

Multi-Stage · Higher Pressure at Lower HP

Baker 1500 & 1500XSW Multi-Stage Jet Pumps

When single-stage pumps can't deliver the pressure you need without going to a much larger HP, multi-stage is the answer. Multiple impellers in series build pressure progressively — same flow, much higher PSI, dramatically better efficiency at irrigation and transfer pressures.

1500 Series — NEMA C Keyed Shaft · ¾ – 1 HP
Cast Iron Pump Housing
Heavy-duty cast iron for pressure containment and long service life under continuous-duty applications.
No-Lead Bronze or Thermoplastic Impellers
Bronze for premium service life in clean water; thermoplastic for corrosion resistance with light sediment.
Carbon-Ceramic Mechanical Seal
Trouble-free seal that runs in the wear pattern indefinitely. Standard on every Baker 1500.
NEMA C Keyed-Shaft Motor
Industrial keyway drive — no slipping under continuous load. ¾ HP and 1 HP single-phase.
1500XSW Series — Extended HP · ¾ – 1½ HP · 1Ø & 3Ø
Higher HP Range
¾ HP, 1 HP, and 1½ HP options. Includes single-phase and three-phase configurations for industrial use.
No Regulating Valve Required
Designed for continuous-duty irrigation, sprinkling, and water transfer without throttling — runs at any operating point on the curve.
Same Cast Iron + Bronze/Plastic Impeller Choice
Same robust construction as the 1500. Choose impeller material based on water quality.
Best Use Cases
Sprinkler systems, lawn irrigation zones, livestock watering, water transfer between tanks, light commercial boosting.
When to Choose Multi-Stage Over Single-Stage

If you need pressure above ~80 PSI from a jet pump, multi-stage is the only efficient option. Single-stage pumps can hit higher pressures only by oversizing HP — wasting electricity and stressing the motor. Multi-stage builds pressure across stages with the same HP, runs cooler, and lasts longer in irrigation duty. Rule of thumb: long pipe runs, sprinkler zones, or systems above 60 PSI working pressure → multi-stage.

Critical Component · Required for Deep Well Operation

Deep Well Ejector Packages

A convertible jet pump on the surface only solves half the problem. Pumping from depth requires a matching down-hole ejector that pushes water UP to the pump. Get the ejector wrong and the system won't prime, won't deliver rated flow, or won't deliver any water at all.

⚠ Information We Need to Quote a Deep Well System

(1) Well casing inside diameter (measured at top, not nominal — 2" casings are often 2.07" actual ID, 4" casings are 4.026" Schedule 80 or 4.090" Schedule 40); (2) Static water level (depth from grade to water surface when pump is off); (3) Drawdown (how far does water level drop when pump runs at rated flow?); (4) Total well depth; (5) Required GPM at rated pressure. Call 281.664.8000 with these five numbers and we match the pump + ejector first time.

Sizing Reference

Jet Pump Sizing Quick Guide

Most jet pump failures trace to sizing errors: wrong HP for the depth, wrong impeller for the water quality, or mismatched ejector. Three steps to size right.

Step 1 — Calculate Required Flow (GPM)

Application Recommended Flow Notes
Single-bath cabin 4–6 GPM ½ HP shallow or convertible adequate
2-bath home 8–12 GPM ½–¾ HP, match impeller to water hardness
3-bath home + dishwasher/laundry 12–18 GPM ¾–1 HP, high-capacity configuration
4-bath home + irrigation 18–25 GPM 1 HP+ or move to multi-stage / submersible
Lawn irrigation per zone 10–20 GPM/zone Multi-stage if > 60 PSI working pressure
Livestock watering (50 head) 5–8 GPM continuous Continuous-duty rated, multi-stage preferred

Step 2 — Determine Total Lift (Suction + Discharge)

Total Lift = Static Water Level Depth + Drawdown + Discharge Elevation + Friction Losses

Static water level > 25 ft? Convertible + ejector requiredIron / sulfur water? 304 SS shaft + plastic impellerLong pipe runs? Add 1 PSI per 100 ft of horizontal pipe2-story home? Add ~5 PSI per 10 ft elevationIrrigation? Multi-stage 1500/1500XSW

Step 3 — Choose Impeller Material by Water Quality

Brass Impeller (Premium)
Best for clean municipal water, shallow lake/pond, soft well water. Longest life, dynamically balanced for low vibration. Higher cost upfront pays back in service life.
→ Clean water · long-term residential
Plastic Impeller
Best for hard water, mild iron content, sandy aquifers. Won't corrode or pit. Lower cost, replace at 7–10 years rather than rebuild brass.
→ Hard water · iron / sulfur
Plastic + SS Insert (Best of Both)
Baker 8000 platform innovation. Plastic body resists chemical attack, stainless insert maintains balance integrity. Best choice for unknown or challenging water.
→ Best for hard well water

Technical FAQ

Common Questions

How do I know if I need a shallow well or deep well jet pump?
Measure the distance from the pump location (where the pump will sit) to the water surface in the well or source. If that distance is 25 feet or less, a shallow well jet pump can pull water up via suction. If it's more than 25 feet, you need a convertible jet pump with a deep well ejector package down in the well. The 25-foot limit is set by atmospheric pressure — no jet pump can suction-lift water beyond that.
What's the difference between NEMA J and NEMA C motor flanges?
NEMA J uses a threaded shaft — the pump end threads directly onto the motor shaft. Standard on Baker 8100, 8200 series. NEMA C (sometimes called square flange) uses a square mounting flange and keyed shaft — pump and motor are bolted together, drive coupling via shaft key. Standard on Baker 8500, 8600, 1500 series. They are NOT interchangeable — the motor flange must match the pump end design.
My jet pump won't prime. What's wrong?
Three most common causes: (1) Air leak on suction side — check fittings, foot valve, suction pipe joints. Air leaks anywhere upstream of the impeller will prevent priming. (2) Foot valve failed (stuck open) — water drains back to the well between cycles, pump loses prime. Replace foot valve. (3) Static water level dropped below pump's lift capability — measure actual water level. If you've moved past 25 ft suction lift, you need a convertible + ejector setup.
Why does my pump short-cycle (turn on and off rapidly)?
Almost always one of three issues: (1) Waterlogged pressure tank — bladder lost pre-charge. Drain tank, check air-side pressure, re-charge to 2 PSI below cut-in setting. (2) Failed check valve — water leaking back. Replace check valve. (3) Pressure switch differential too narrow — set to wider 30/50 or 40/60 cut-in/cut-out for adequate drawdown time.
Brass impeller or plastic impeller — which should I choose?
Brass for clean municipal water, lake/stream surface water, or soft well water — premium service life, dynamically balanced. Plastic for hard water, mild iron content, sandy aquifers — won't corrode or pit, lower cost replacement. Plastic with stainless insert (Baker 8000 platform) when you don't know the water chemistry yet or have challenging conditions — best of both worlds. If your water has sulfur smell, iron staining, or hardness above 7 grains, choose plastic.
Can I switch a 115V jet pump to 230V?
Yes — every Baker dual-voltage jet pump has a field-switchable voltage selector under the motor end cover. Switch to 230V if you want to reduce starting current draw, run a longer wire run with smaller gauge, or match an existing 230V circuit. The pump's HP, flow, and pressure performance are identical on either voltage. Always disconnect power before switching and have an electrician verify the supply circuit matches the new voltage selection.
What's the difference between the 8100 and 8000 series?
The 8100 is a NEMA J shallow well pump only — fixed configuration for surface or driven-point applications up to 25 ft. The 8000 is a modern convertible — runs as shallow well OR pairs with an ejector package for deep well to 150 ft. The 8000 also includes the upgraded 304 SS motor shaft, SS wear ring, and plastic-with-SS-insert impeller for better performance in challenging water. If your water source could change in the future or you have hard water, choose the 8000.
When do I need a multi-stage jet pump (1500 / 1500XSW)?
When your application needs pressure above ~80 PSI, when you have long pipe runs (irrigation), or when you need continuous-duty operation without throttling. Multi-stage builds pressure across multiple impellers in series — same flow, much higher PSI, better efficiency at irrigation pressures. Single-stage pumps hit those pressures only by oversizing HP, which wastes electricity and stresses the motor.
How do I size a deep well ejector package?
Send us five numbers: (1) Pump model number; (2) Well casing inside diameter (measure with caliper or check well log — 2" or 4" most common); (3) Static water level (depth to water with pump off); (4) Total well depth; (5) Required flow at the surface.
